Right-to-repair refers to a movement where people are fighting worldwide for the right to continue to repair products the we own, as well as for the right for us to choose who repairs them.

Why Right-To-Repair is Needed

• Planned Obsolescence: companies are purposely building their products to break faster, so you have to pay to replace them sooner.
• Unfixable Products: some products will have their components soldered, glued, or riveted, to stop people from being able to repair.
• Brand-Specific Parts: These parts may cost more than buying a new product. As well as that, some companies refuse to let independent repair technicians purchase their parts to try and force costumers to only use the product company for repairs.
• Restrictive Programing. For these, the programs refuse to let you fix your own products (a large example of this happens to farm equipment, where farmers have to hack their own equipment if they want to repair on their own).

How to Help

• Join right-to-repair movements in your area
• Support organizations like iFixIt, Repair Clinic, Repair Cafe and Farm Hack.
• Consider buying repair-friendly products, like the Fairphone.

With wildfires and dust storms seeming to happen more often, many are looking into ways to make the air in their homes safer to breathe.

A do-it-yourself (DIY) air filter is an affordable air-cleaning device that typically uses a standard household fan paired with a filter medium to remove particulate matter (PM) from indoor air. Such filters have gained attention during events such as wildfires and sandstorms, when commercial air purifiers may be prohibitively expensive or unavailable. This setup draws air through the filter before it reaches the fan, purifying the air as it passes through. [1]

Register Vent Filter Implementation

Rather than having a filter sitting in the room, some instead buy vent filters so that the air from heaters or AC's is filtered. [2] These sometimes have magnets or stick-on velcro to attach the filters to the vent covers.

Circular Fan Implementation

Rather than furnace filters, some people propose using washable fabric filters mounted to a fan. These filters may be reusable, though typically offer lower filtration efficiency than MERV-rated filters. The performance depends strongly on the fabric's structure and fiber composition, but layering fabrics can filter between 12%-96% of particles. [3] [4]

A better option for circular fans is to get a filter shroud with a filter rating. The shroud covers the sides, and in doing so ensures that more air is pulled through the filter, instead of around it.

Box-Fan Implementation

1. Use a box fan with safety certification and thermal protection.
2. Attach a MERV-13 (or higher) furnace filter to the intake side of the fan, ensuring the arrow on the filter aligns with the airflow direction.
3. Consider using multiple filters (e.g., four filters in a cube) to increase surface area and reduce pressure drop.
4. Monitor and replace filters when they become dirty or loaded; replacement frequency depends on air quality and particulate loading.

With hydroponics, you replace soil for water and liquid fertilizers.

Hydroponics are becoming more and more popular in an urban setting, because they can be grown in small spaces (such as apartment buildings), and can be built into most unused spaces. For example, in Alberta, Canada, a family converted an unused school into a hydroponic farm that provides fruits and veggies for their town all year. [1]

Setups for hydroponics can range from large factories, to just a small setup on a kitchen counter.

Hydroponics will not work for all crop types (such as trees), and fruits that require pollination may have to be hand-pollinated.

Hydroponic Benefits:

• Can enable year-round growing.
• Reduce water usage (compared to conventional farming).
• No weeds.
• They do not require soil, which drastically cuts down the chance of pests.
• Can bring food options into food deserts
• Can be grown in restrictive spaces (such as indoors).
• Can avoid harsh weather by being able to be grown in doors

DIY Basic Hydroponics

Supplies:

• Bin with a lid
• Drill and drill bit
• Hydroponic baskets
• Lava stones or other filler
• Aquarium bubbler
• Hydroponic fertilizer solution
• Water
• Seedlings

Instructions:

1. Using a drill bit slightly smaller than the rim of your baskets, drill holes in the lid. Be sure to leave gaps between holes.
2. Drill a hole for the cable of the aquarium bubbler
3. Fill the bin with water and add the fertilizer solution
4. Put on the lid and place baskets into their holes.
5. Place seedlings into the baskets with the lava stones
6. Turn on the bubbler

Make sure the setup is in a sunny location, otherwise you will need a grow light.

DIY Window Hydroponics:

NPR and Window Farms

Do you have plastic bottles sitting around? You could consider turning them into a window food garden!

You’ll of course need plants that do not get too big (such as dwarf tomato plants instead of full-sized).

If your window does not get enough sunlight, you may also have to supplement that with grow lights and a plug timer.

Supplies:

• used water bottles or pop bottles
• a pump kit (with tubing and joints)
• a bucket of water
• growing substrate
• a hanging anchor kit
• silicone steel tube
• chain (for hanging)
• tools (electric drill, plier, hole punch)

In modern landscaping, any sort of hole or ditch is considered a “dangerous tripping hazard,” “unsightly,” or “a waste of space,” so everything is smoothed out. If you go to most cities and farms, the only non-flat places are designed to carry water away from cities, rather than hold onto it.

This thought process can not only increase overland flooding and wash away topsoil, but it also gives water no place to sit and be absorbed into the soil. Without any water capture gradually trickling into the soil and creating an underground reservoir, the landscape becomes less drought resistant and more susceptible to wildfires.

Swales and the other water catchment methods might be different shapes and use slightly different methods, but they all do all work the same on a basic level. The idea is to dig or build a shape that will slowdown and/or catch some of the movement of water. This can make the soil more absorbent (dry and hardened soil does not absorb water as easily) which promotes healthy microbiome of the soil.

In the process of reversing landscape desertification, it is proving drastically helpful. As the underground water reserves build, so does the vegetation.

The Different Methods:

• Demi-lunes / Half – moons / Semi-circular bunds [1]
• Eyebrow terraces / banquettes [2]
• Negarim [3]
• Contour bunds [4]
• Micro basins [5]

In cities, they look like a slight ditch in front of a house, or a creek in a greenspace.

They do not have to be very deep, and often do not need any fancy equipment to dig(most just involve using a shovel), but they can do amazing things.

Kratky is a type of hydroponics where you suspend plants at the top of a container, and have the roots of the plants dangle down into a nutrient solution. It can be used to grow plants outdoors and/or indoors.

Equipment:

• Container: to hold everything. Ensure it is a container that is not clear, or that you wrap or paint the container (to prevent algae growth).
  
  • Note: You can convert plastic containers by cutting or drilling a hole the same diameter as your insert into the lid.

  
  

• Plant inserts. You can buy them online, or 3d-print them.
• Growing Solution.
• Rockwool seed-starting squares
• Clay balls

Note: if you want to avoid plastic as much as possible, this method is still possible with a clay pot and a wood lid with holes drilled for the inserts.

About:

1. Start the seeds in rockwool seed starters(Rockwool is natural basalt rock and recycled slag). Note: if you use soil anywhere in the setup, it will likely lead to root-rot.
2. Once the seedlings are big enough to transfer, place them in the inserts with clay balls. You can use a thick cotton string between your seedlings and into the water to help bring moisture to your seedling, and help lead the roots to the solution. Otherwise, wait to put the insert into your container until the roots are long enough to reach the solution.

• Less Restrictions: In places where there is a lot of censorship, using the internet can provide more freedom than traditional radio.
• Free Music: So long as you have internet, you can listen to music. This makes internet radio an alternative for those who can't afford music-streaming platforms.
• Emergency Situation News: If you are somewhere that does not have a radio, you can connect to local news stations over the internet.

How To Tune In:

While there are some dedicated internet radio apps and websites, some of them only display stations directly linked to their companies, and some even charge for the service. So, be sure to use FOSS apps and programs (example: VLC. There is a tutorial here ).

Once you have your app or program: 1. Find stations using search engines like Radio Stream URL Search Engine or InternetRadio . 2. Add stations to your platform of choice 3. Enjoy!

There are devices you can buy that look just like traditional radios, but another popular method is to make. Here are some examples:

As you might have guessed, this was one of my gradma's recipes. It is for a cheese sauce that you make in bulk and freeze so that you have a sauce ready to grab for a quick meal.

Ingredients:

• 8oz sharp cheddar cheese
• ¾ cup boiling water
• ⅓ cup butter or margarine, melted
• ½ cup instant blending flour
• 1 ½ tsp salt
• 1 tsp dry mustard
• 2 tsp worcestershire sauce
• ½ cup milk powder

Directions:

• Shred cheese with electric shredder or grate. Place the shredded cheese in a blender.
• Pour boiling water into the blender and blend until smooth and cheese is melted.
• Add remaining ingredients in order listed then mix.
• Pour sauce into 8 ½ “ x 4 ½ “ loaf pan or aluminum ice cube tray.
• Freeze until consistency of ice cream.
• Cut into 16 one-inch cubes; remove to chilled tray.
• Freeze until solid.
• Package and store in freezer.

To Use:

Vegetables: Cook one, 10-oz package frozen lima beans, broccoli, or asparagus in ¾ cup lightly salted water until tender. Add 4 cheese sauce cubes. Stir and cook until sauce is smooth and thick.

Pasta Sauce: To prepare a separate sauce, stir 3 cubes into ¾ cup milk. Cook over medium heat until smooth and thick. Use with macaroni or vegetables.

Olla (pronounced oy-ya) is Spanish for clay pot, and work as a garden irrigation system that saves water. 1

The terracotta pots are buried in the soil, and filled with water. That water then slowly seeps into the soil while being protected from surface evaporation. They may save between 60 – 70% of water when compared to the conventional watering can. 1

They are thought to have been used by humans for over 4000 years, and have seen use around the world. 2

"To maximize impact, place ollas every 2 – 3 feet in the garden. Larger ollas, with a 2 or more-gallon capacity, can be placed up to 3 – 4 feet apart." [1]

Today, there are many different options: including watering spikes, traditional style olla, and irrigation-ready olla.

Make Your Own:

If you can not afford or find a traditional Olla, you can create your own.

Supplies:

• Two plain terracotta pots
• Terracotta pot saucer/base
• Silicone glue or another sealant of your choice
• A flat rock or pot saucer

Instructions:

1. Fill the drainage hole of one of the pots with the silicone glue. Allow it to fully set.
2. Use the glue to seal top rims of the two pots together. Allow the glue to fully set.
3. Dig a hole in your garden deep enough for the top edge of the pot to be just above the soil.
4. Place in the pot so that the unfilled drainage hole is to the top. Fill in the dirt, leaving the top uncovered.
5. Fill the pot with water. This is much easier with a funnel (if you have one).
6. Place the rock or pot saucer over the hole to keep anything from falling in.

Roads can cause major problems for wildlife, and not just from the danger of being truck by vehicles. With busy enough traffic, wildlife may avoid crossing at all, causing habitat fragmentation. Habitat fragmentation is when the natural paths and territories of a living creature is broken up. This limits the area animals can forage, can limit mating options, and can completely disrupt migration patterns. Due to this, habitat fragmentation is showing to have world-wide consequences. [1]

In order to stitch habitats back together, wildlife overpasses, underpasses/tunnels, and viaducts are all used. They not only protect the wildlife, but also help drivers and passengers by limiting the chance of a collision with an animal. Considering roads are the biggest source of human-caused wildlife death in Canada's national parks [2] , a change can make a big impact.

Proof They Work

Wildlife crossings are not a new idea, so some of our oldest crossings have provided many years of data, showing their worth.

“In 2012, eleven species of large mammals have been recorded using wildlife crossings more than 150,000 times since 1996. This includes grizzly and black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars, moose, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and more recently wolverine and lynx.“ Parks Canada

When paired with fences to keep animals off the roads and help encourage them to use the crossings, areas can see a reduction in animal-vehicle collisions by more than 80%, and that number jumps to a reduction of 96% for just elk and deer. [4]

What Wildlife Crossings Look Like

There are a wide range of different crossings that might be built for animals. Some are large overpasses that span over roads and are covered with greenery to make them seem more like hills. Others are large tunnels that pass under the roads, and some are barely wider than a basket ball or baseball, and are used for our smallest critters. An example of one of these small paths is in Waterton Lakes National Park (Canada) where care was taken to ensure Salamanders have a safe path. [5]

Typically, overpasses work better than underpasses for most wildlife, since not all wildlife is comfortable traversing into a dark tunnel which is often loud with traffic vibrations. In comparison, the overpasses are typically made with soil, grass, and trees, to feel like a hill for wildlife.

Where We Also Need More

As cities continue to spread outward, one place more care in creating these would be within cities themselves. Typically, they are only found in wild spaces, but they make a big impact in cities as well.

Ceramic water filters became particularly popular in the 1800's in London, when poor water qualities were often reported on. [3] Since then, they spread across the world.

They are an inexpensive water filter which uses the small pore size of the ceramics to filter out impurities. You pour water into the top half, and that water slowly filters into the lower half. Since it only needs gravity and does not cost anything to run, it is a very cost-effective way of filtering water.

Some (though not all) also come with a activated carbon filter to aid in the removal of chemical contaminates (like chlorine) and/or a special silver treatment to help kill bacteria, mold, and algae. [1]

Since many people in the world do not have save drinking water or do not trust the water from their local treatment plants, these filters can provide a filtration method that does not contribute to the use of bottled water.

Note: When treating water directly from a wild water source, it is generally suggested to use a filtration method along with a method of disinfecting (such as boiling). This is because while filtering can remove many dangers, it can not remove viruses. [2]

Maintenance:

The top half should be cleaned regularly to keep the ceramic pours free of impurities. This can be done with soap and water, or just water and a bristle brush.

Aquaponics might seem like something new, but there are ancient versions practised by certain indigenous cultures.

Chinampa

Chinampa are a form of aquaponics that the Aztec people made used of extensively. A chinampa is a floating garden built on a freshwater lake, made by making a raft of woven reeds, with stakes to keep it in place. Soil was placed down until it was above the waters surface.

"The earliest fields that have been securely dated are from the Middle Postclassic period, 1150 – 1350 CE.” Wikipedia

This system eliminates the need for watering, and was successful in growing maize, fruit, tomatoes, amaranth, beans, chile, and flowers.

While some are still used today, they are lowering in number as lakes are drained or dried out.

Himalayan Foothills

A raad is a floating farm found in Dal Lake in Kashmir.

When a location is chosen, a plant called “piyach” is added. The farmers tend to its growth for the next 2-3 years, ensuring it stays the proper length and width as the roots grow deep into the lake bed. 1

“A raad liven, that looks like a gigantic pincer consisting of two planks – each three feet in width – is lowered by two people in two boats into the soft sediment of the lake bed. A two feet thick slab of soil, held together by the weeds, is manually severed from the bottom of the lake with the help of the planks which are fitted with steel edges. The planks then float to the surface bearing a portion of the lake bed with them. More soil is added to the surface of the raad. The weed decomposes to become a natural fertilizer for the vegetables to be grown." DownToEarth 2

Grey water is waste water from your house that is not from your toilet, and is instead from things like your shower, sink, and dishwasher. Instead of letting the water go down the drain, some people are reusing their grey water to both save water and (for those with water-bills) save money.

How it typically works is that the grey water is piped into a series of natural filters, so that the result is surprisingly clean water without the use of chemicals. That water (while not drinkable) can be used to water plants.

Do note that to use this system, you must use bio-degradable detergents, soaps, and so on. Non-biodegradable products may be too harsh for your system to break down and could harm plants and wildlife.

Garden System:

Water is piped out into a filtration system series. Here is a common setup:

Course Medium:

Something to catch foods and other solids. Examples:
- A container of mulch or coconut fibre with worms. The worm castings (waste) can be removed for the garden.
- A container of sand.

Grease Trap:

The oil and geese will raise to the surface of the water as it settles, so that it can be removed from the water.

Toilet System:

Some companies (such as Aqualoop are selling systems that clean your water in a reservoir within your house, so that the grey water can be used within toilets. There is little point to use potable (drinkable) water within your toilet, so these systems can save money and water.

Seeds As Intellectual Property

Seeds might seem like a non-controversial subject, but it can get very tricky. Let's say you breed some oat varieties together to create a plant that is resistant to a type of blight. Well, now you can claim the plant as your intellectual property, and thus make it illegal for farmers to save the seeds from the crops they grow. If the farmers want to protect their crops from blight, they'll have to buy your seeds every single year. 1 2

As this continues, companies try to increase the production of the crops (for example, bigger than ever strawberries), sometimes at the cost of breeding out nutritional properties and varieties that might have resistance to other risks (for example, a plant having higher resistance to droughts).

There are some efforts to fight this, however. For example, there is the Open Source Seed Initiative and Open Source Seeds which both aim to protect and increase options for seeds that are public domain.

Seed Bombs

Masanobu Fukuoka (1913 – 2008) was a promoter of no-till and natural farming from Japan, and was well known for his work on fighting desertification.

He was a microbiologist and agricultural scientist specializing in plant pathology, and his personal research and writings earned him awards as he traveled the world teaching(including meeting with the United Nations).

Seedball is a mixture of clay and various seeds, that allows the seeds to stay protected inside the ball until it rains, and the conditions become favourable for sprouting.

One aspect he was most known for was his use of seed balls, which was an ancient technique he re-discovered and popularized. The idea is that the seeds are protected, but will become exposed when it rains. As the clay breaks apart, the seeds that are meant to grow will grow.

In 1973, those seed bombs started being used by Liz Christy for guerrilla gardening, and has been used for that since.

DIY Seed Bombs:

1. Gather a variety of seeds, and mix them together
2. Knead the clay, adding small amounts of water. Kneed well to avoid cracks.
3. Mix seeds into a small amount of clay so that the seeds are not exposed and roll into a round shape.
4. Throw the seed balls where you want them to grow.

Other places have also started catching on. For example, even in 2012 in the USA, volunteers started painting tar roofs white in New York. 1 However, this is not something trending everywhere. Some places are accustomed to dark colored roofs, so even in hot climates, they are slow to change.

This change will of course be easier in places where flat roofs are more common and ready to paint, but slanted roofs have options too. For example, metal roofing is more environmentally friendly2 than shingles, is more durable, and can last longer. What is more, the reflective properties of the metal can also help cool your homes.3
