Given how actual German nazies (in the 1930s) reacted to the transgender and sexual institute, along with book burnings, LGBTQ purge, and the like..
I'd say that transphobes are nazies. Or at least their ideologies greatly coincide.

free software is about building technology that is owned by humanity and not any one individual.
Hence, it is Incompatible with capitalist economics.

The way I like to think it, you can't stop racists from using free software, but it was never about stopping racists from doing things. (No really.) It was about racists stopping other people from doing things. Giving freedom to the people under attack by racists will always hinder the goals of those racists, more than the racists gain from having that freedom themselves. Any time we start talking about putting racists in camps, it reinforces the notion of putting minorities in camps. Free software, like all universal freedom, ends racism to some degree.
Or like, if evil people use your software for evil, without your software they'd be able to do that anyway, with software reserved only for evil people. As an example see Mastodon vs. Twitter.

Yeah weird people, sectarians, extremist and everything is the darkside of the moon... I would say that you can find more of them here, but lately my algorithm in Instagram just ended up in the Christian white otakus homophobic reels about templaria, lol.
@Napo have you ever heard of "libertarian"? Its the ideology thats most strongly pro federation/ fediverse zerotrust, encryption; rights to modify reproduce and sell
its not fringe - "Open Source" was born out of libertarian thinkers.. we have a lot of common ground - common good is more important than poltical ideology

If you have power to moderate a space and you don't use it to kick out bigots, you are handing them the power to kick out whoever they want.
You can't be "apolitical" about it.
You can't just not take a stance.
You can't be neutral.
If you make a space safe for bigots, you make it unsafe for everyone they're prejudiced against.

PS: You don't get to have influence and then decide you're not allowed to be criticized when you refuse to do the right thing with it. So if you really don't want the responsibility and would like to take the neutral path, there *is* one thing you can do:
Step aside and cede your position of influence to someone who will use it to make the moral choices that you're too cowardly to make.

@ebassi please stop spreading misinformation if you don't know the updated situation. I recommend you look at the recent accessibility merge requests in the foss ecosystem, especially when it comes to gtk, gnome, mutter and kde. If you did that before you spoke, you'll have realised that:
- there are more than two or three people working on it. Sure, maybe on gtk, but there are people working on orca, people working on odilia, other toolkits, kde, individual apps, etc etc
- gtk is now pretty smart when it comes to heuristics for computing the accessible names of controls. As a consequence, a lot of apps are, while not perfect, pretty much usable now, and most of the gripes are similar to the issues sighted people have where something would occasionally go off screen or become opaque when it shouldn't, but it's no longer unusable
- gnome created a way to make orca capture keystrokes the way it should, and kde is following their work, so wayland is catching up to x11. We still have clipboard issues, there are daemons which should be able to copy stuff to the clipboard, same for orca, copy content under flat review to the clipboard is pretty useful in sending people command outputs and such, and now that's more difficult, if not impossible, with wayland, but we're getting there.
- app developers are more receptive to accessibility issues nowadays, which is good, it wasn't so for a long time
Things aren't perfect, there are lots of issues still, I use this system for a long time and I know them well. However, because of this, I'm also observing that in the last two years, more has been done than in the last two decades, so there's more than hope floating in the air. And if you have specific issues, why don't you talk to the devs about it? I know not everyone can write code, I barely can when it comes to those systems, but getting in touch with people and reporting bugs is the best way one can help, and it doesn't cost you much time. For example, the amount of time you spent on dragging all of the people who work on accessibility through the mud derogatorily and dismissively, you could have spent on identifying a single problem from the huge amount you clame to find, and then report it. Maybe something could have been done?
They’re interested in their freedom.
I would have thought racism would be incompatible with working with a globally distributed project or company. I'm not sure how you could work with people you think are inherently inferior. Yet I've seen it a few times.
Luckily those attitudes haven't lasted long: either the person moves on or changes their views.
So you say that we should drive away all those who think that they have a higher privilege to exist than other people, based that other groups of people have a higher privilege to exist than other people?
That sounds ridiculous, cruelty is based on that thinking. The thinking of racists, homophobes and whatnot is not going to heal the ills of the world.
It's more likely to cause it.
Ok, the fash in the replies were to be expected.
But I’m in awe of the people who explain free software at you.

Its a good place to start. Not ashamed to admit I needed those "training wheels" so I could "toe dip" in to Linux.
Now Im running Fedora w/ KDE and two headless Linux boxes (1 Debian Pi and 1 Ubuntu).
Took some time but he is now rocking his own server at home. Some terminal basics go a long way.

Resistance can be as simple as using certain terms:
"online video" instead of "YouTube video".
"online search" instead of "Google Search" (or "do a search" instead of "google it".)
"music playlist" instead of "Spotify playlist".
Do not give these company any free advertising by using their names.
Do not make them the default term for something.

@Amte Something like "use PeerTube instead of YouTube" doesn't work well when you need to see a video that's only on YouTube though...
So how do we get people to put their videos on other platforms? That's the tricky part.

@BenjaminKlein "I tried searching for something but I got Googled!"
("Googled" = overwhelmed with shitty AI suggestions, poor results, and too many ads.)
In my friendsgroup, we coined the term "vevishovi" for "vertical viral short video" to refer to one of those videos from the different platforms, be it YouTube shorts, or instagram reels, or TikTok's.
Spread the word! Would love to see that used more wildly! #vevishovi

If folx use a company name enough times without associating it with the company the company can lose rights to their trademark
Imagine if google lost the rights to the word google
online search" instead of "Google Search
Or do refer to it as Googling, but explicitly when you use a different search engine. Say things like ‘Google it on DuckDuckGo’. When a trademark becomes a generic term, it stops being a trademark. If everyone says ‘Google it on Bing’, Google becomes an unenforceable trademark.
Diotima reshared this.
WHY?
Simple all of these companies will loose their trademark once these words become generic words. That's one of the words things that can happen for these companies as all of their competition then also can just use these terms and ultimately nobody will even remember that there was a company with that name at some point in time.
M.S. Bellows, Jr. reshared this.
@helgenug While the term references Apple's iPod, it came from the community, not from Apple.
Good info on the terms, attempts to trademark it, and Apple's view.
