Deerhoof – Breakup Song

I’ve posted about my love for Deerhoof on here before.

There is a lot of buzz about Deerhoof lately after they pulled their catalogue off of Spotify in a boycott following the news the CEO had invested $702 million in AI powered startup for weapons software. A number of musicians and bands have since followed suit. I mean about time….Spotify was shit for a lot of reason before this. Anyway it’s of no surprise Deerhoof made this decision. They've been very outspoken in their social media for a long time about capitalism, the rise of fascism, and Palestine. I don’t just like them for their politics. They are also bloody excellent musicians. It’s great to see them having a bit of a revival again although

They've been very outspoken in their social media for a long time about capitalism, the rise of fascism, and Palestine. I don’t just like them for their politics. They are also bloody excellent musicians. It’s great to see them having a bit of a revival again although they never stopped making music.

This album is their 2012 release. I bought this at a time when I thought I would try and buy most of their albums on vinyl. Little did I realise they would be the kind of band that would continue to release an album every year and I couldn’t keep up listening to each release.

For a band with prolific output their albums do vary despite their very unique sound. Some are more melodic then others. Despite the title suggesting it may be a down tempo vibe, the sleeve sticker clarifies the album contains “noise jingles for parties”. In addition to this I also go the limited edition 6 x Flexi-disc, 7" book of the album. Completely unnecessary impulse purchase and kinda redundant but was a cool novelty at the time. I haven’t tried to play it…

I rediscovered this album when I was putting my Cat Power album back on the shelf and couldn’t remember much on this album at all despite the title track. This was great and much shorter then other their other albums. It contains lots of ditties of similar ilk to Friend Opportunity. It’s inspired me to go back and listen to some of the other later releases – a brief look and there is at least 7 I haven’t heard….with a new album released this year.

Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity

Today was a real early 2000s listening experience.

Despite kicking around since 1995 it wasn't until almost a decade later that I first heard Deerhoof. Fortunate to have seen them live three times. Greg is an incredible drummer. Such a down to earth band. They were shocked my friend and I travelled from Adelaide to Melbourne to see them. The distance was nothing to us but it blew their minds.

I get excited when I pop them on a playlist and someone loves them.
