Gene Clark - No Other
Oof. This one still hits.
I had a Gene Clark and the Byrds CD that I use to thrash in my car, particularly on long drives to uni and back when we had moved to the country in the hills. Sounds idyllic but it was a truly miserable time. I found comfort in singing along with Gene.
Skip forward to the years of internet streaming and I went to see what happened after his short stint with the Byrds. When I heard this album I was absolutely floored. It's hard to believe it tanked at the time leading to Clark spiralling. Think Neil Young but opulence with a gospel choir, if one can imagine.
Strength of Strings and Some Misunderstanding still completely overwhelm me. I need a second coffee after that.

Patrice Rushen - Prelusion
I'm not a huge jazz piano fan. But I like Patrice, I like when she plays, and I like this. Repressed for the first time in 51 years this was recorded when she was 20yrs old. Incredible she went from high school talent show at 17, preformed at Monterey Jazz Festival in 1972, to then composing and recording her own album shortly after. The album features Joe Henderson on Tenor Saxophone and ends with a surprise synth jazz funk track Puttered Bopcorn. I never thought I'd find a copy of this on vinyl and thank goodness the repress sounds good.

Imarhan - Self Titled
2010 onwards saw the riffs of Tuareg music being played at music festivals, colabs with bands and cafes. Imarhan (meaning the ones I care about), from Aljeria was introduced to me by my friend who was djing in Germany and putting on shows including supporting Imarhan to come over. This album is slower, builds up, and has a mix of sounds than perhaps some of the more well known Tuareg releases. It put my cats to sleep. The self titled track is a banger.

The Undertones - Hypnotised
I haven't spun this in years. I loved The Undertones when I was younger and I still have a big soft spot for them. I bought this from the Magil Big star for $8. I don't know why I left the price tag on then. I have the first self-titled album on CD. I loved all the tongue in cheek and awkward songs about unrequited love. On listen now, some lyrics have aged better than others.
Maybe there was something about the kids from Derry that resonated with me being awkward in my shitty suburban town. I remember I was gifted my grandfather's record player and I'd always turn the volume up on this record.
Thoroughly enjoyed playing this and now I want to watch the doco as I realised I've not seen it.

Makaya McCraven - In these times
I love this album. It's beautiful and the perfect evening wind down album. Hence the shadows on the pic. We were fortunate to see Makaya Mccraven in late Oct 2023. Twas a small intimate show at Summertown (the venue not the town) supported by a three piece band - all incredibly talented. You could see the sweat flying off the cymbals. Track 9 second side - So Ubuji - is in the high rotation permanent collection of tunes.
You can still pick up a new copy for a very reasonable price which is rare these days.
On a side note - spot the difference 👀

Sunday Coffee and Tunes 23/03/25.
Fantastic comp complied by previous Tarntanya/ Adelaide local /Malaysia, Alice Whittington a.k.a Norsica.
Ayo Ke Disco' (meaning "Let's go to the disco" in Indonesian) highlighs a selection of rare tracks from local labels in South-East Asia during the 1970s and 80s. It's also the name of one of the tracks on the second side.
I stopped buying comps for awhile after some of the lastest reissue releases became a bit hit and miss on listens. However this is banger from start to finish! Gilles Peterson lists it as his top comp of 2024. This has been hard to get my mits on in stores - always sold out. After giving up in Naarm / Melbourne I found a copy by chance.
If I didn't have to get ready to go to my neices birthday I would have played it again.

Tuesday Coffee and Tunes - 18/03/2025
Formed in 1983 in Gabon, Central Africa by jazz pianist and composer Frédéric Gassita this was the four piece's only release. Apparently it took 12 months to record at a swanky studio and the sound quality shows. The six tracks contain a mix of synths, boogie style, and funky bass lines. I love the front cover and the cute spelling error. This is the 2019 repress on the French label BeauMonde. I remember I was working in the CBD when this came out and was drawn to it instantly. After listening on line I power walked on my lunch break to Transition Records to pick up a copy.

Numero Group did a stellar job of this re-release. It sounds incredible compared to the shitty rips I had when we use to play this on the radio. It's heart warming to see an artist enjoy the success of their rediscovered gems - rare these days. This repress has been made in collaboration with Rupa, producers and other contributors. With so many reissues coming out, Numero Group do some of the best in terms of working with artists and quality.

Darando - Let My People Go
Some tunes for a slow morning after birthday celebrations. Lots has been written about Darando and how he was rediscovered. Now famous for Didn't I, there are also other great tracks on this compilation of works and previously unreleased material.
We were sitting in a pizza place Wednesday night aptly named Thin Slizzy, and Didn't I came on. Maybe it was because I was full of carbs, or good holiday vibes, but hearing this on their big stereo was stunning. I went and got the album the next day before getting on the plane.

My mate posted about this the other week the same day I was listening to Rough Times on my playlist. Banger btw. You should go read their post. Its good.
Found a copy for a tenner whilst away. Opened it to find this inscription. Hope Tony liked the album as much as Jonny and Ron...

Cosmos - Self Titled
I discovered this band when looking up this obscure Japanese Yamaha demo record which I posted about here in a previous coffee and tunes post:
friendica.world/display/84b6ef…
All girl synth trio from Japan in the 80s. I was actually looking for their album Bourbon Suite which has a banger on it. I wasn't really expecting to find anything of theirs to be honest. But we were recommended a new record store in Northcote by two locals on our trip - Rathdowne Records. Specialising in jazz, soul funk and Japanese imports it was an overwhelming dig but a good recommendation. It is here I found this.
This album is not for everyone and at points it become hard work. There are a few good tracks on this. The rest sort of sounds like mid music for anime credits etc - which I appreciate was a popular style in Japan in the 80s. I love the cover and they look cool AF on the back.

Patrice Rushen - Before the Dawn
Another one from our Naarm/Melbourne trip. You'll hear that a bit. It was the biggest haul I've done in years. Scored this one from Plug Seven. This has been a long term want list item that felt very satisying to cross off. And a 1976 Japanese pressing to boot! Woo! I'm a sucker for an obi. This album has a mix of everything - piano, synth and some vocals. It's well overdue for a quality repress.
I've been trying to collect her records for a few years now but they do not pop up often - other than the handful of the same few. Whilst I know I can go on discogs, I like finding things in the wild if I can. What a powerhouse of talent and so ahead of her time. If you only know her for her 90s RnB classic "Forgot Me Nots" go back and listen to some early albums. You'll be surprised. Fun fact - Google tells me Prince had a crush on her.

Doechii - Alligator Bites Never Heal
Album of the year. What is there not to love about Doechii. That she is unashamedly her own style, goes hard, her album cover is a homage to my favourite Minnie Riperton album, that shes queer, the list goes on and on. She deserves all the acollades she is receiving at the moment. This album has been so refreshing and rips on our stereo. I picked up a copy on our little getaway to Melbourne recently. The vinyl version sold out instantly and was hard to find. I found a copy by chance. The repress on black vinyl is coming out next week!
Go watch her tiny desk if you haven't already.

Thursday Night // Friday morning ear ringing
Adelaide went off last night! And I went out on a Thursday night - a rare treat these days.
Tarp are a local duo and they were incredible. A must see! And of course Yamantaka Eye! What a crazy legend. At 61, he's still pumping out the hardest beats. We never thought we'd ever see him / boredoms and now I've seen him twice in less then 12 months.
The last picture is from when we saw him unsound last year. The unsound set had visuals to go with it. It was the most surprising and insane 60 mins. Etched in my brain!

Don Cherry - Brown Rice
Blows my mind this was only repressed in 2022, and with the orignal artwork by Moki. I found a copy on holiday - unlike my friend who found an alternate cover copy in an opshop!
Reading Neneh's memior, Moki was truly one of the hardest working women and the thread that held the family and at points Don together. There was a recent exhibition of her work last year and it's great to see her incredible work being recognised finally!

Last time I went to Laneway was 12 years ago. A lot has changed, including me and my dislike of festivals. But you sometimes gotta go where the music is otherwise you miss out in our little town.
Charlie puts on a SHOW with a very minimal set up which is impressive and clever. I admire that. Everyone was having a good time including the x2 thrupples I was wedged next to. You probably could of heard the crowd from the other side of town. The energy was next level. Can't remeber the last time I experienced that to be honest.
Some other mentions - Remi Wolfe was fun, Joey Valance and Brae looked like they'd stepped out of a new metal band to do beastie boys (great vibes), and a good saxophone solo during clario which made the toilet line bearable. There were some other things I would of liked to see but didn't happen.

Picked this up from the paradise loft record fair couple of years ago. It's well worn and crunchy but I don't mind cos it was $10. Ends with a Giorgio Moroder sounding track which kinda comes out of leftfield. I love the album art by Greg Porto who I realised when looking him up designed the album covers for Grace Jones. Cool!

This record is perfect for a Saturday morning and coffee.
On the back cover there is a written piece, like a letter by Malachi Thompson to the listener. He describes what this album means to him and on each track title describes what influenced them and celebrates his collaborators. He dedicates this album to his grandfather. Love stuff like that.
"Do away with labels and category, face the music for what it is. My concept is one that is alive and growing".
Crazy this album was only represed in 2022.

This album combines unique field recordings Tristan has creatively captured and rhythms of swirling sound. When we played it at home it surprisingly really chilled out our cats.

Not usually a fan of live albums but this one is an exception.
I love this album. It's one of my favourite Talking Heads albums.
Purchased for $12 at Porthole records when I was around 17 or 18. I always sing A Clean Break (Let's Work) really loud. Soz neighbours.
I'm currently teaching myself to play bass (again, sorry neighbours). I am definitely no Tina Weymouth. Give me 6 months and I might be able to crack a Talking Heads track...

I've been thinking about spinning this album on the weekend since I watched the Doechii performance at the Grammys this week. It was iconic. As iconic as the Kendrick performance when he won. I'm not a big Grammys fan. But those two performances stick in my mind.
The album that inspired Bowie's Black Star. This was so ahead of its time. I listen now and it doesn't sound 10 years old.
We saw Kendrick on his Damn tour in 2018. His ability to hold the audience at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, at points with just him alone on stage, was phenomenal.

I hate loading and unloading the dishwasher. Such a dreary task. You know what else is dreary. This album. Which I thought might be good to spin at the same time.
I'm a long term Pulp fan. This album is produced by Scott Walker who I also like.
Bought this secondhand from the basement of Bigstar back in the day. I didn't have access to good internet at home so was hard to try before you buy.
This album received really great reviews.
I thought some time would allow me to appreciate perhaps what my younger ears may of missed. Clearly not.
What am I missing Pulp and Scott fans?

It's the year 2000. I'm 16 and I'm helping my boyfriend at the time set up his local art exhibition in our shitty suburban town. We listened to frontier psychiatrist on repeat. The Avalanches blew my mind. When I hear them now I think of hot Australian summers listening to Triple J.
I have not played this album for many years. But I was watching the Jamie xx guest spot with Derrick Gee (very good, do recommend) and he was talking about his love for The Avalanches at age 11 and its them that inspired him to dj and they exchange tunes now which I thought was really lovely.
I've been thinking about this album for several weeks since watching that. It's a scorchio 38 degrees today and decided to throw it on. David was lucky enough to see them early on at Big Day Out at the time wearing op shop suits in boiling Australian heat on the main stage. I have seen them live but it was much later.
This album is hitting its 25 year anniversary this year and it still sounds fresh now as it did then.
