Thurston More – Demolished Thoughts
I remember buying this from Polyester records in Melbourne upon it’s release in 2011. Sonic Youth and their various solo works have always been in the background of my 20’s onwards and one of the mutual “middle ground” bands my partner and I shared together– often playing Sonic Youth on long car drives at uni. It’s been a long time since I have spun this. I had forgotten the album was produced by Beck who also plays synth and bass on this. I discovered today reading the liner notes it features Mary Lattimore, American harp player who I didn’t know back then. I only know her from her stunning album of 2020 -Silver Ladders.
The sound and production on this is mint. It’s warm and sounds like they are in the room whilst strings and synths swirl. Like a Sonic Youth unplugged album or as my partner said today a throw back to the demolished rooms album of theirs. Inside is a bunch of collages and cut outs, with Thurston writing and playing with their daughter CoCo. We now know this was recorded in the midst of a marriage ending. Listening now, it sounds even sadder and more harrowing but still beautiful.
