Sons of Kemet - Your Queen Is A Reptile
Belated post … soz
I put this on the morning after seeing Kahil el Zabar. Both he and the band were brilliant but the crowd was awful - talking throughout about the most inane shit. Prior to his set there was a Melbourne jazz group doing a set inspired by MF Doom. I lasted one song and by the second had to get some air. Too smooth for my liking and a drummer who kept talking.
I thought I was perhaps just feeling a tad grumpy. But when I put this on this morning, it reminded me I just want my jazz to have some umph, and not have some guy talking in the back of me ear about the tension on his crumpler bag mesh. If I want something gentler there needs to be something interesting happening. This has both!
Their third album was released at the height of the British jazz movement despite releasing and playing long before. The concept has a complex backstory mixing science fiction conspiracy theory, race, and a big fuck you to the monarchy. I hadn’t spun this for awhile and it sounded great. I spun it twice.
