Where the hell are Biden, Harris, Obama, Clinton? Have I missed any statements or guidance from them somehow? I’ve seen nothing.
And Congress. I credit some of them for many things they are doing, trying to do. Credit where due, always.
But I would think more fiery language/fight instead of weak politicalspeak would have been, you know, something they’d try? Bueller?
If I see one more speak-with-hand gesture from Jeffries, I’m gonna scream.
This is a full blown crisis. WHERE ARE THEY?

Back in the days of sanity, stability & governance norms, the outgoing administration refrained from commenting on or interfering with the new admin unless explicitly called upon by the new president for help.

It's not about if they want to speak out. It's about us asking them to and I think it's unfair to "count on" Obama and crew to do more than they already did and were frankly rejected for already. It didn't work.

“Would you rather have Jeffries, or a republican in that seat?” A year ago I’d have taken any victory. Today I see that it doesn’t actually change anything to have opposition so weak, and it might even be worse than having no opposition at all because it prevents the entry of more savvy and capable representatives.
Laffy
in reply to TheEjj • • •@TheEjj I disagree.
I REALLY disagree.
So you’d be fine with more Republican votes in the House and fewer Dem votes? Because no matter how flimsy the Dems are, they vote the right way. Handing over Congress to Republicans out of frustration is handing over votes.

But yes, at this point, and I’m happy to be proven wrong, I don’t see very much difference between a 219-215 house that votes in lockstep and a 319-215. Apparently the last election wasn’t enough of a shellacking for democrats to wake up and meet the moment.

Congressional Dems can and have started to make things difficult for the crazies on the other side. But that's ...

That's the problem. I keep thinking about the clip linked below. The Democrats in Congress are basically analogous to McMurphy saying "you know, you're right, there's no way I could possibly move that console thing, I guess I'll just go ahead and take the meds." The whole point of this classic movie (and the novel, of course) is that there's a point to trying even when you know you can't succeed.

i would like to see more gamesmanship and use of congressional rules and procedure to obstruct and delay. the GOP gave a master class in that during the obama administration. i see too much acquiescence and not enough of that obstruction right now.
i do see more constituents holding elected GOP feet to the fire, which is mildly encouraging. they also need to wake up that completely dissolving congressional authority isn't a win for them either.
i'd also like to see more of what the Democratfic governors did, speaking out for Ukraine, USAID, the world, etc. we have a lot of diplomatic bridges to repair.

it does seem that the state based suits having some effect. it is a nice irony that the party of "refight the civil war, less federal govt, states rights" is getting a few kicks in the teeth from states.
i admit that some of this is just decades of frustration at watching the Democrats following a losing game plan and seemingly unwilling to try another way.

The GOP’s gamesmanship during Obama was achievable because they had the majority. Dems are not in that position. They consistently all vote against GOP actions, but even with every single Democrat vote, the GOP is able to pass their agenda because they a have few more Representatives & Senators than the Dems.

I guess that "It can't happen here" is still going strong with some US Americans. For them it's just nicer to tell themselves "It won't get that bad, those leftist activists are overreacting". If it "can't happen here" then you don't have to do anything. That's just nicer.
Similar with the "It's to late now. Everything was decided in november" crowd. If it's too late then there's nothing you can do either. Which is convenient.

To get the shit done without being stigmatized, detained and tortured, you need mass and a media-friendly non-violent weapon of mass destruction called #GeneralStrike

Using " "x" people" is not a constructive framing.
No skin color group is homogeneous, no ethnic group is homogeneous, no top level religious grouping (Jewish, Christian, Islam, Hindu, Buddhist, ...) is homogeneous; same holds for sexual/gender groupings, etc.
How about accepting and dealing with individuals as individuals, and critique them based on their actions?
None of the above is meant to ignore or dismiss the damaging and discriminatory actions that have hurt so many (too often justified by "those people" framing), or the need to make sure that appropriate compensatory actions are taken.

There is no "try" in allyship. One either does, or does not and, yes, it can be extremely difficult and taxing overcoming one's lifetime of conditioning, but that's the rock bottom of what being an ally means.
And that is true across the full spectrum of race, gender, sexuality, etc.
If you can't be bothered to always try, regardless of those *individuals* you deem to be unworthy, then you were NEVER an ally.
You really told on yourself, unwittingly.

There’s nothing about “deeming someone unworthy”, it's about being misrepresented and talked down to. Just like this.
I aim to be an ally for the full spectrum of race, gender, sexuality etc., however that doesn't extend to reacting positively to being insulted and even lied about by individuals. They, individually, like you, can fuck off.
Mad Villain
in reply to Ricardo Harvin • • •That’s the part a lot of white people don’t want to realize.
They can say whatever about who they vote for and what their individual peer group does, but it hasn’t changed material conditions for most of the people they are allegedly allies with.
And getting pissy with Black folks who point out this constant reality is a dead giveaway that ones alleged progressive actions are self serving.
They don’t want equality and fair play. They want to absolve themselves of the guilt of benefiting from a racist system. How Black folks are treated is irrelevant to them.

It's not the first time Democrats have had to rebuild what the Republicans have destroyed. It's been the case every time republicans have gained control of the government.

The problem is, what would you have them do? As the minority party, they don’t control the floor agenda, nor can they dictate what agencies must do. Waiting for the GOP to self-immolate seems the most likely reasoning at this point. Some have filed lawsuits with the courts, which is really the only official thing they can do in addition to waiting. Unofficially, yes they could speak out against the administration, but using what forum? What would be effective at this point with so much noise already blanketing everything?
Very frustrating indeed.
Laffy
in reply to Ande Jacobson • • •@goodreedAJ I explained what I'd have them do: Get in front of a camera or a mic and offer guidance, encouragement, advice, leadership. Sound forceful, offer solutions, like, "run for office, go to a town hall, do a sit-in at your Congress member's office"... type of thing. Help people resist. Be role models.
ANYthing. They're radio silent. They said, "We're not going anywhere" after the election. So where are they?

As John Lewis said and led by example...good trouble.
Ande Jacobson
in reply to Wiley Miller • • •@Wileymiller
That's fair, and a lot of that is happening.
There are several Democrats who are doing positive things. For instance, my House rep (Ro Khanna) is speaking out rather loudly supporting resistance efforts. He actively communicates with constituents regularly about resistance activities as well and what they can do along with the importance of continuing all of their efforts.
And Adam Schiff is also speaking out publicly on a regular basis, as is Elizabeth Warren. In addition to their individual social media posts and videos, the unofficial hearing they held is a good example. Because they are the minority party, they can't hold an official one, but unofficially they can still investigate and gather evidence which they make public. That's a good thing.
I guess because I get inundated with all of this, I see a lot of the activities that are happening. Is it universal, no. But it's also not nothing.
Once again, every voice matters, including our own voices.
Laffy

“ And Congress. I credit some of them for many things they are doing, trying to do. Credit where due, always.
But I would think more fiery language/fight instead of weak politicalspeak would have been, you know, something they’d try? Bueller?
If I see one more speak-with-hand gesture from Jeffries, I’m gonna scream”
@Wileymiller
Ande Jacobson
in reply to Laffy • • •No, I saw it. I'm just not sure that flame-throwing into the already deafening abyss would accomplish much. I think that more pointed, specific things like the stuff that Khanna, Schiff, Warren, and Buttigieg are already doing is the right approach.
Is Jeffries annoying? Yes. Is Schumer understated? Yes. But making everything fiery just makes it all so loud that people tune out.
I think that making sure the statements that resonate with each of us are spread far and wide would be a good thing. We all have our own audiences. You and Wiley are already doing that. So am I.
Another thing that could help would be to build a non-right-wing ecosystem that breaks into the stranglehold that Sinclair/Murdoch/et. al. have in information deserts, but that takes time to build. We don't have a counterpart to their deluge, so there are far too many people who don't readily have anything but the right-wing lies flooding their ears and eyes 24/7.
@Wileymiller
Laffy
in reply to Ande Jacobson • • •@goodreedAJ People constantly tell me how the language and style they use now puts them to sleep. They laugh at them. I disagree. We need some force behind their words. Right now they sound rehearsed, stiff, unemotional, like they're reciting rather than speaking TO us.
And I was not including Warren in that, btw. She speaks like a human, with emotion, knowledge, and clearly enough to communicate her points to the average person.

In my Barbie Political Dream house, Biden, Harris, Obama and Clinton are coming up with a brilliant master plan of resistance.
This does not appear to be happening.
I want more of our elected Democrats to speak like AOC and Jasmine Crockett, as well as Elizabeth Warren and good old Bernie "Get off my lawn" Sanders. I want elected Democrats to have town halls in districts where the Republicans are too chicken to hear from their constituents and shake things up.
Jefferies was a HUGE disappointment. One of my Senators, Adam Schiff is still doing things the old school way which is totally ineffective and infuriating. He's a good man, but he needs to change the status quo.

Which might not be a bad strategy, if they understand that at a certain point, some final straw will really really upset people, and THEN the opposition will need to appear in force as a salvific army ready to take the field to defend American values.
I don't have heartburn with their silence right now. I have serious mistrust as to whether they're even capable of that second part, though.

I think the Dems need to be in the people’s faces every day shining a light on what is happening and preparing candidates for 2026 and 2028. Getting them face time, making their names household words. Positioning them as the people that acknowledge the coup and have a plan to stop it.
Right now there is no Dem successor in the wings. They need to fix that.

in reply to That Nonproductive Guy • • •@nonproductive I take no offence, we'll agree to disagree. There’s no plan for stopping this coup in 2026/28 that matters. It’s either stopped quickly, or there are no real elections then. And I’m not saying disappear, town halls etc are good, I’m saying there’s nothing to be gained with a frontal attack, instead wait, not indefinitely, but months. Plan behind the scenes, stay out of the media, come in fresh with new leaders. The Dem Party won’t beat Trump, the people will.

My fear with staying out of the media is that there are so many that are already blaming Dems for this whole thing. While I don’t think they can control the narrative, they can certainly create their own.

There are other questions, too, that go deeper, like: why would the system be changing course now, when it appears to be doing exceptionally well?

If not wondering WHY they are not acting, then you are making some assumptions about what causes their inaction. Does "buellerism" explain it? Did donors spent one billion on electing Dems to see them do nothing? Or, are they actually doing something by not doing it?

I ran into that one before so I used my other account. My reply:
your profile says you are a refugee from twitter,--that's belittling actual refugees- and in 3 years only 67 followers, well I can see why. Fediverse is supposed to be a place for conversation and debate, yes often times it gets heated but your condescending replies are annoying.
In fact so much so that I deleted my 2 posts you had pinned because I prefer that over my handle being associated with your

in reply to Laffy • • •Jeffries just doesn't have the juice for this job at this time. I appreciated him in his role as an impeachment manager in the first trump imoeachment. It's all been downhill since he became Leader.
There's a stiffness to him, stilted speech, unnatural hand gestures. His presence lacks authenticity and passion. So do his words.
Perhaps I'm being too harsh, but I really want him to succeed, and he's not meeting the grade.
Time for a more dynamic and inspiring leader.

Heck, why not declare that she runs for President in 2028 and start campaigning, flood the news with details about the latest crimes of Trump, his latest grifting, or his ridiculous announcement? One rally per month would shake things up ... Just saying...

in reply to Laffy • • •I keep looking at Trump & thinking about how Biden could have welcomed such an unhinged fascist (obvious at the time) into the White House with open arms as if democracy was all pink-cheeked and working as it should.
It remains an open question to me whether that was under duress ('Polonium tea, anyone or are you going to be 'nice' to me?'), or did he really believe all was good and this wasn't perhaps the last free election America might ever see?
Laffy
in reply to Kyle Memoir 🍉 • • •@f800gecko No, come on. Conspiracy theory about THAT?
No, he was trying to keep things as normal as he could. Typical Biden.

in reply to Laffy • • •That’s perhaps worse.
I’ve been blocked for saying he was a disaster, but I’ve not changed my view.
As to the paranoia: some of the most outlandish conspiracy nonsense this kid of fascist survivors has dreamed up has sadly ended up proving all too real (the collapse of decency & decorum Friday in the Oval Office unanticipated, admittedly).
Laffy
in reply to Kyle Memoir 🍉 • • •@f800gecko Oh I'm with you on how weird stuff is now.
And I understand your feelings about Biden. I'm not defending his open arms thing, just explaining it.
I don't think he was a disaster though, he did some really good stuff.

I wondered what would happen if we circled the WH with giant inflatable rats like these.

All I said, if you read my post, was that I'd love to hear some forceful, encouraging words or advice. ANYthing.
They all said after the election, "We're not going anywhere." Then they virtually disappeared.
I did not say they should lead or backseat drive or anything close to that. I specifically used the words "statements or guidance."
I'd love for members of Congress to be the loud ones.

As for "and was a Democrat before you were born" 🤣 I have a feeling you're wrong about that too.

in reply to Laffy • • •It sure looks like they are choosing to lay low rather than put themselves in the line of fire. I also think a significant number of elected folks are receiving credible threats (either outright violence against them/their families, or the specter of Elon focusing his funding on their opponents).
I'm wondering how someone would get a lot of media coverage if they did speak out. It seems like so many of the big media players are bending the knee to the administration that it would be hard to get air time. Bernie's rallies in Iowa and Nebraska didn't seem to get much coverage, but they seemed to be well-attended.

I’d rather hear words of encouragement or guidance, myself. We’re all in danger of being arrested. AOC, Crockett, Warren, others aren’t quiet. They’re targets.
All I’m asking is that they do an email blast, an audio, something, because they literally promised us, “We aren’t going anywhere” after the election knowing full well what was coming. And they aren’t here for us.
