Translation-related questions
Hi !Friendica Developers — I'm quite new here so please excuse me if I'm posting in the wrong place or in the wrong way.
I've been trying to contribute to the translation of Friendica to Portuguese on Transifex — I started with smaller resources like the git.friendi.ca homepage and the Friendica Directory, and have a few suggestions that might improve the translation experience.
1. There's currently no reviewer for the Portuguese language team in Transifex, so even though the two resources I mentioned above are 100% completed now, they show up as 0% reviewed, so it's not clear whether they'll be included in the software. I sent a message to the team's coordinator, TheMsg, offering to volunteer as a reviewer for pt_PT, but thought I'd ask here just in case they may not be very active these days.
2. I would like to contribute contextual information to the translatable strings, as that would have been very helpful to me as a translator and will surely help others. According to the Transifex docs, that should be possible by adding comments to the .po
files. However, I suspect that manually added comments would have to be manually propagated/duplicated to all the other .po
files; An alternative would be to have the comments in the source files where the strings are defined (e.g. we could add comments like// TRANSLATORS: Test contextual message.
above code lines likeDI::sysmsg()->addNotice(DI::l10n()->t('Item not found.'));
— but I think that would require changes in how xgettext
is invoked. For example, in the main friendica repo I thought (based on the xgettext docs) this could be addressed by adding the --add-comments=TRANSLATORS:
argument (for the example above — we could use any other prefix, of course), to this line, but I tested it locally and it had no difference. Anyway, assuming we identify the right enchantments to make this work, would such a contribution (as PR adding such comment strings to the source files of the relevant repositories) be welcome?
3. The strings in the .po
files for the Friendica Directory follow a strange order, which made it awkard to translate in the Transifex interface. Foe example, the strings from AccountTypeTabs.php
occur at lines 214, 219, 299, 306, and 340, interespersed with strings from other source files. Is there a logic to this order? And if not, could they be sorted so that they would occur in the logical sequence in the .po
files (and consequently also in Transifex)?
Please let me know if I should pursue this conversation elsewhere! Thanks 😀
