Reinventing Musicians

As a musician it can be challenging to still keep your style and continue with the fast-pacing society we live in nowadays. Well, musicians are great inventors. A great example is from Anoushka Shankar. She travelled together with her father for a bit in the earlier days (traditional music), then went solo and still found ways to reinvent her music nowadays. In this song, you hear Piano combined with a Sitar. Could this be a bit of Ambient style combined with Indian music? This has not happened before! Is it New-Fusion? Is it Cross-Cultural Music? Musical Syncretism: The blending of musical traditions from different cultures into a new form.

Miserere with Helium

Composer Allegri wrote a musicpiece called 'Miserere'. The pope said it was only to be listened to in the chapel. It was not allowed to copy any music that came from the chapels. Years later Mozart went to Italy to visit the chapel and heard this musicpiece. He was able to remember it. He wrote it down and send it to the music publisher. The next year the music sheets were available for this music work. Also Mendelssohn has made a 'cover', only.... There was one little tiny mistake... It was written a quart higher than the original song. Normally spoken in the choir the castratos were able to sing... Only, by the time of Mendelssohn castrato singing was already banned. So... How to sing these high notes?

The influence of a music expert in the media

I remember as a kid watching this commercial on TV (translated of course). Years later I realised that the father of this famous composer was actually a brewer. This commercial made an impact due to that the company of this beer made a very good reference to the father, the composer, the song about fatherland which reflects in the crowd coming together, and the flowing river (song) which reflects the beer. The beer comes from Czech Republic as well.

Influences from the past

A combination from today's society issues, Stromae's story and - this might be a 'cover' from French composer Georges Bizet (1875-1937). Bizet wrote the song Carmen as an opera version. The lyric "Love is a wild bird" which refers to a relationship in Bizet's work, was taken into context by Stromae by referring to social media instead.

Musical Climate

1970 - Before this timeperiod it was very common to record music from all over the world and collect a lot of folk songs. Many musicians travelled for fieldwork and record parts to get some inspiration for songs. 10 years later pop music markets had an appeal to "international" sounds, from fusion to exotic, from intercultural to cross-over songs. It brought a signature to sound in marketing and radio.

Phonetics

1972 - A song written in gibberish. Goal: To mimic the sound and rhythm of American English, to show how English pop music might feel to non-English speakers. Big hit in Europe, a cult classic.
