Kylie Minogue – Impossible Princess
There is a new Kylie doco out on Netflix. As a long time Kylie fan since I was a kid I thought it was great! Alas I have never been able to see her live. My mother in law served her many years ago at a famous restaurant here in my home town. She said she was delightful and tiny!
My first Kylie album was her 1989 Rhythm of Love on cassette. I was 5. Then in 1993 for Christmas I got her greatest hits CD - one of my first few CDS. I still own both of these (and my other Kylie CDS). My friend and I would listen to her older sister’s Kylie albums Let’s Get to It and the 1994 arty self titled one, cranking Confide in Me on the bedroom stereo.
As I grew older I still liked Kylie but it certainly was “cool” to like Kylie when I was a teenager. So when Impossible Princess came out with it’s mix of indie, trip hop, electronica and even some jazz on one track I was down despite no one else in my friend group. This photo is my loved and thrashed CD copy. To date it remains my favourite Kylie album. The doco inspired me to give it a spin. *I’ve actually been streaming it in my car whilst doing errands. It’s been a good 20 so years since I have listened to this and gosh it’s good. Took me right back to bedroom dancing days.
*TIL Kylie did a cover of the northern soul classic - time will pass you by. For years after northern soul nights I'd wondered where I had heard it before. Turns out it was early Kylie tucked on the end of her self titled album.
