Thundercat - Distracted
I’ve often said there are two types of people in the world: those who will sing along with the low bits of a Level 42 song and those who sing along with the high bits. I’ve always been a high bit type of chap - one of my only impressions is of the Level 42 keyboard player doing his falsetto vocal bit.
I only say this to lead into my smart-arse comment about this LP, which is that it sounds like a supercut of the falsetto vocal bits of all the Level 42 albums.
Now I’ve got that out of the way, and stopped chuckling to myself smugly, I can go on to elaborate a little further.
Whilst I generally flinch at the sound of any bass guitar with more than four strings, Thundercat is the exception. I think that’s because his genius is in his subtlety – his super-complex playing is never overpowering. Similarly, the many and varied guests are there, but used discreetly. It’s got the creative bass playing of Jaco Pastorius, with the feel of Stanley Clark, the high-precision production of Steely Dan, and the chuck-it-all-in-the-pot-ness of George Duke.
Considering I’ve only played this twice, I really like it. It’s going to be a grower.
