Emel Mathlouthi - Everywhere We Looked Was Burning
An example of when the live show is better then the album.
Emel is a Tunisian political singer songwriter, based currently in New York. In 2008 her works were banned by the Tunisian government and she relocated to Paris. She preformed at Womad 2024 and it was spectacular! You couldn’t hear a pin drop in the crowd whilst her powerful voice sang for freedom in Palestine with drums and electronic beats thumping, whilst she twirled like Kate Bush on stage waving a giant Palestinian flag. There wasn’t a dry eye around me. This album has a similar ethereal sound, with percussion, and electronics that build throughout – think Bjork influence. But it doesn’t quite hit the spot. Maybe it’s because live it was so dam powerful and this doesn’t quite capture that.
