Dr Feelgood - Let It Roll

I was up early this morning and fancied hearing some Dr Feelgood. I took a lucky dip into the Dr Feelgood section and this came out.

This was their album following their biggest hit (Milk & Alcohol), so its fair to assume there was a bit of United Artists cash being thrown their way.

For instance, they could afford to get famous British blues producer Mike Vernon in with his sound-polishing kit. They also had 40 sets of Toby jugs made of the band's busts for the art work, to feature in the pub ephemera sleeve art.

One of the great things about Dr Feelgood was their rough-arse delivery, and they were able to use this to make you look away at times from material which was a bit sub-par. Unfortunately, Vernon's production smooths and polishes their sound so completely that it makes even the better tunes sound flat and listless.

The irony of this is that, coming up on the rails, was Nine Below Zero who made/make a nice career of London R&B wth those rough edges left in. I mean, compare each band's versions of Riding On The L&N.
