Yothu Yindi – Tribal Voice
In the school holidays in the 90's I’d have little vacations to stay with my Aunt. She had a huge range of CD's including a lot of 80’s Australian and international bands from all over. Her collection was vastly different to my parents. I loved picking things and then stacking my selections in her fancy 6 stacker cd system and dancing around in her lounge room. One of my favourite memories was pumping her Yothu Yindi Cd. Yothu Yindi were one of Australia’s most successful late 80’s early 90’s bands despite the inherently racist climate towards First Nations people at the time (and sadly to this day).
Locally, Tribal Voice was only released on CD and Cassette. This is the 2018 repress, the first time on vinyl in Australia. Just as things were starting to open up after covid, I was asked to spin some records for one of the little DIY clubs Ancient World based on my picks for our radio show, which was a real mix, just like my Aunts CD stacker. Now being older, I wasn't sure how my choices were going to go with a much younger crowd. At that time, covid restrictions refused people to dance. It was a bit surreal spinning tunes with no one dancing. But I could see people swaying in their chairs, on the floor and the bar staff grooving. I closed my set with radio dance mix of Djapana - Sunset Dreaming. Pumping that out on the big stereo was such a highlight. When I hear this now, it transports me right back to the early 90s, as did the sound of both neighbours doing their Sunday lawn mowing.
