When I opened up Lemmy this morning I could not believe my eyes. The top story was a headline from Forbes stating:
« ‘Open Source And Ethical’ TikTok, WhatsApp And Instagram Alternatives Could Transform Social Media ».

The article mostly focused on #Pixelfed and did a fairly good job explaining how #ActivityPub works. But they spelled #Mastodon « Mastadon » over and over again with no links to it. Yikes.

B for the effort, but please editors do better!

forbes.com/sites/esatdedezade/…

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

The author's probably never used it themselves—all their own social links are corporate.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

its impressive to me that we trust them to be honest about who the top list of the richest people in the world is but they dont even use spellcheck before posting an article
in reply to ꧁ wakest ꧂

i should mention that its not a real forbes article but some opinion page thing, forbes has so much random stuff on its website
in reply to Fire Alarm Puller

@penny shows up in google news like any forbes article so it counts to me, but I understand you mean there are different levels of authenticity for how forbesy something is
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

weird, almost makes it looks like they misspelled Mastodon on purpose. 🫠
in reply to Lord Elektron

@ruisdeeltje

If it was deliberate it won't stop people finding Mastodon.

If you put the incorrect spelling into google the top search result is still

mastodon.social

second is the wikipedia article about mastodon.

But, I am using a plugin to block the google AI crap.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

great and not so great, it illustrates why we are in the political fascist mess we are in here right now with the main stream media…

Either they have no clue, no educated opinion or they simply don’t care and they are acting as if stupidity is a virtue.

#bigtech #mainstreammedia #desinformation #stupidity

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Oh no. The Mastodon misspelling curse continues, after nearly 25 years.

(I joined the Power Rangers fandom in 2001 and it was a glaring issue there.)

in reply to J M Berntson

@J M Berntson @Elena Rossini ⁂ hYou're talking about modern writers. They're lucky they know how to use punctuation and some sort of proper grammar, let alone how to spell things correctly! But if it makes you feel any better, here is a quote from 1907 about newspapers. Unlike most of my grammars, it was written by an American, so I cannot say whether the same held true in England. Sadly, though, I can say that today, the quality of writing, and especially speech at the BBC is terrible in most cases, though there are some exceptions.

"Our newspapers are almost universally characterized by provincial and vulgar diction. (There are a few honorable exceptions.) An expression like " Rev. Clifford has proven himself a hustler" is no more justified by the wide currency of similar expressions in the newspapers than " has went " is justified by wide currency in conversation. General newspaper usage has nothing whatever to do with good English usage." EDWIN C. WOOLLEY

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Thanks for letting us know! I sent a message to the author asking to correct the typo (from his personal website), we'll see if it works..
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I’ve noticed that this “mastADon” misspelling is a thing. Seen it a few times on Reddit. I wonder if the drunken goblins that run autocorrect on our devices have now learned it that way for some of those users after repeated typos.

My drunken goblin has some favorite “corrections” for sure

in reply to astroPug

@astroPug @Elena Rossini ⁂ Even as a grammar prescriptivist, I used to misspell that! The difference is that I am totally blind and use a screen reader (I only know the letters of words if I go over them one at a time), and I'm not writing professionally. But even if I were just writing to my readers on Dreamwidth or here on Friendica, if it were an essay or I wanted to promote something, I would certainly ensure that I knew how to spell it!
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

moreover, I know for a fact that eloquence consistently mispronounces mastodon as mastadon, and I think it's not the only one, that's why blog posts on the sites of several blindness organizations had it misspelled for a while. Braille displays help here a lot, but the issue is that afew companies have a monopoly on braille technology, which in turn makes a lot of even medium quality equipment prohibitively expensive unless you're in highly developed countries, such as the US

Quicky
@xs4me2 In defence, I don't think that's the reason. It's being reported on now because the official apps are publicly available having been in beta-limbo forever. Following their release, exposure on TikTok and insta resulted in user numbers rocketing. Tech media began to report on it, and now news media, as a result of Pixelfed entering the conversation. News media aren't likely to report on a beta app used by a relatively negligible number of people.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

And mastodon is an actual word while mastadon is not, so they must not use spellcheck!
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

It seems they've fixed it, thankfully.

That said, I find the MastAdon misspelling interesting, because to me it's obvious that it's not spelled with an A because I'd pronounce that differently, but apparently a lot of speakers pronounce these two spellings the same. I wonder if it's native English speakers generally, or perhaps to do with dialects.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Please join me in a round of applause for @elduvelle who, after reading my toot, reached out to the Forbes journalist, pointing out the "Mastadon" typo.

The typo has been fixed and the article is even linking to joinmastodon.org now 🥳

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

It just occurred to me that the Forbes article uses a stock photo of a hand holding up a smartphone with a bunch of apps from mainstream, for-profit social media... even if the piece is about the #Fediverse.

So on my to do list for today: recreating a similar photo showing Fediverse software instead. Like, how my actual phone looks like.

As a photographer, I feel it's my duty to do this.

I will give the pic a CC BY-ND license. Thoughts?

And fellow photographers will you join in?

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

You are completely on the right track, Elena. Also a good time to point out how much I admire your enthusiasm! ❤️

From a recent trip to Germany, I brought home a Fairphone 5. Let me know if I can help out with a photo of Fedi apps on such screen.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Better CC-licensed stock photos than Getty's but stock photos are used by news outlets to grab attention and clicks, not convey information. Their use is a symptom of that industry's rot.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Thanks, great idea! I strongly suggest the CC BY-SA license instead. This would allow:
1. Others to build on your good work, such as by swapping out, or adding, an app icon on the smartphone screen with another Fediverse app.
2. Still require attribution to you *without* implying endorsement.
3. Allow improvements to accessibility such as translations.
4. Allow easier incorporation into other things such as embedding the image in slides for a presentation about the Fediverse, etc.
in reply to Pen

@nacly +1 for staying away from CC BY-NC and using CC BY or CC BY-SA instead. This way it could also be shared with Wikimedia Commons repository! commons.wikimedia.org/
@Pen
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

My best shot at a stock photo for the #Fediverse, showing its most popular projects.

Please show some mercy, I am not a hand model (obvi) and my masking skills are a little rusty.

If some photographers would like to improve it, I could share my original photo and screenshot.

Hilariously, when I opened the tripod my bracelet got stuck in it and I semi-panicked for a few moments because I was home alone... with a tripod stuck to my wrist. Thankfully I managed to free myself 😂

#FediLove

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I was going suggest Phanpy (I have it installed as my only Mastodon client on my iPhone as a PWA and it works really well) but indeed having only "official" apps may be a better idea for a generic photo like this.

@Elena Rossini ⁂

Nice! I know you have to make decisions about which to display, but it would be great to include Friendica, as many folks are searching for a Facebook alternative. Having Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Friendica represented handily displays alternatives to major Meta products.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

@_elena‌ would it be a good or bad idea trying to make it “fuller” by adding some unofficial apps?
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I see at least 2 fingers and a thumb. Even a fingernail. That totally qualifies to be a hand model IMHO. 🤳
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

This is my mobile phone ;) Composite montage in Canva(.)com: real screenshot embedded in a photograph.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

-Thanks for doing this! - my suggestion is to add a Friendica web app, Raccoon for Friendica, Fedilab or Insporation* app icon for that sixth spot to make it more symmetrical.

in reply to Total Sonic Media

@TotalSonic I hadn't heard of Insporation* before it looks quite nice. Cool to see people still working on Diaspora stuff
in reply to ꧁ wakest ꧂

@liaizon - yeah, I think Diaspora has some advantages over Friendica - it has an official mobile app for both iOS and Android, smoother sign up process, less cluttered and less confusing gui, and easier to categorize contacts and target posts. Its main disadvantages to me is that posts are not editable after you make them, and that it doesn't use ActivityPub, only its own protocol. My hope is someone combines the best of Friendica and Diaspora for yet another platform.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Does the Lemmy App really have that awful white pixilization around it??

The photo is grand! I hope wherever you post it you can add all the possible iterations of fediverse and mastodon to the tags so it comes up in searches from here in out.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

- screen shot of my "social" apps - also a shout out to the NeoLauncher's category based app drawer for making apps better organized.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Still better than having to go to the store to buy nail polish remover using only your left hand, because you've super glued your right thumb to your index finger...

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

After Orson Welles, you can then confirm that tripods are indeed dangerous?
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Dear Fedi friends, thank you for all your boosts and messages today – it's been a RIP my mentions sort of day not just on Mastodon, but on Pixelfed too. Wow.

I'm delighted to hear you liked my smartphone "stock" photo of Fedi apps. Tomorrow I'll add it to my website with clear instructions (re: CC license) so that hopefully anyone can download it and use it.

I'm off to pick up my child from pre-school, so I'll be offline for the next few hours. Thanks for all your feedback & support! ❤️

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

looks great! Maybe add it to your websites and add a Creative Commons license to make your intentions clear, e.g. if you want it to be shared and give credit use: CC-BY-SA etc.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Looks great Elena!

Happy that you're still with us. Death by tripod is such a silly way to go 🙃

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

You could always add some mastodon client apps like @ivory and @MonaApp and @IceCubesApp too!!!

haha, I just opened #lemmy and the first post was your picture reshared by @fediverse
Thanks for your enthusiasm!
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

nice, may want to add it to @mediawiki hope to see this guess added to news sources in the future
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I’m giving a talk on #decentralisation in Feb at Social Media Breakfast Madison And would love to use this!
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

I usually use a copyleft license like CC BY-SA because I think it's better to let people to create derivative with same license than not permit them.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

very cool! I'm sure I'm not the only one who messaged them but I'm glad it got updated. Thanks for drawing attention to the article (and the typo) in the first place, and for everything else that you do for the Fedi ❤️
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Never mind the spelling of Mastodon, I’m stunned Forbes knows how to spell ‘ethical’!
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Thanks for sharing this news.
They corrected their mistake. I'd say they deserves an A now 🙂
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

thats hilarious I keep spelling it wrong too, just makes more sense

For Lemmy you can take a look here: join-lemmy.org/apps

For the rest, who knows if there are web apps in ios like for Android. Friendica for example on Android allows you to install the web app. On ios I don't know

not their fault, they looked for Mastadon and could not find a website so they decided it was probably not important enough to include if it could not be found easily...

why not create a jpg that looks like a fediverse phone, put it in the phone as wallpaper, then you can set up the phone and photograph it with your camera or another phone without the screen getting dim?

How's Voyager if yo don't mind me asking?
I've been using Mlem ( mlem.group ) and it "does it job" but there's always room for a better app. 😁
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

The stock photo shows the major social media apps.

Let's think about all the free publicity that these guys get. They have share buttons with their logo on on every news paper website, every news broascaster website and numerous other websites.

The media that are dependent on these networks have fed the beast that is killing them.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Whenever I see it written like 'Mastadon' I think of Sacha Dhawan's delivery of "Spy.... Master" in Doctor Who.

Which doesn't mean anything except that I definitely belong on Mastodon.

in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Can we talk #Lemmy ?

I’d like to get away from #Reddit but I’ve heard sketchy things about the people behind Lemmy and I haven’t seen any other platform coming up better.

What’s your take?

in reply to KB Sez

@kbsez I mean, yes, the main developer seems like he supports fascist dictators, which is uncool. Left-wing, at least, but still uncool.

But unlike with Meta and X, the political views of the guy behind the software have no repercussions on what people use the software for, as far as I can see. That's up to the instance owners.

Still, it's been enough to scare people away from Lemmy, which is in itself a problem—a more neutral stance would probably be more appealing to new users.

Unknown parent

Check out @IceCubesApp for Mastodon, it's open source and doesn't require a subscription, unlike Ivory. And for Lemmy, take a look at Arctic, it closely resembles Apollo for Reddit, but it's a native iOS/SwiftUI app, unlike Voyager, which is basically just a web app.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

maybe they were from New Jersey or Boston? Kind of like how they say “pasta” and “mazda” with that “Ah!” A like the A in apple?
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

They must have seen your comments since links were added and spelling corrected.
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

The article has corrected both those points, the misspelling and the lack of links. The new editorial process is publish first, have an editor look at it when they have time.

I caught a story on car radio this weekend, NPR, about the fediverse and they spent an inordinately long time mocking the name in the most derisive and childish manner, but did praise ActivityPub, Masto, Pixelfed, et al for being the only viable path forward for a free and open internet. Better than nothing?

in reply to Slyphic

@Slyphic It's not a news article from the news/editorial team, it's one of their "contributor" blogs.

a week ago I was going to mastodon and typing it in to the address bar; I couldn’t get it on the screen, and a couple of efforts later ,realized I’d been typing in “masturbate.social” so I can’t say much…
in reply to Elena Rossini ⁂

Seems intentional. Pixelfed mostly represents a loss of advertising revenue, while Mastodon represents a loss of control over narrative.

If at some point you want to do an update, I quickly edited it so that it has the original Lemmy logo and the new/future Loops logo.

No hurry, maybe it can wait the new version of Loops being released, and maybe it’s easier just to retake an updated screenshot at some point of the future with whatever apps are relevant at that time. Simply got an itch to “fix” those 😀
