MIA – Matangi

One of those separate the art from the artist moments. This one to be honest really surprised me and stings a bit. The pipe line to 5g anti vax and then endorsing Trump. It was so sad to watch an artist you love spiral in real time.

MIA played last night in Adelaide at one of the strangest line ups for a festival I have seen. I didn’t go. Partly due to the above, and because I saw her in 2011 at the Big Day Out and it was terrible. I remember being utterly disappointed. So I was intrigued to hear what this set was like in her new era. I was pleased to awake to a review from my friend. I’m not sure if it was the actual show or the drugs but they described it as chaotic and messy but fucking sick, just had to ignore her talking about Jesus and Covid...

Chaotic and messy is an apt description of this album. Having loved her earlier works, I remember buying this on impulse on the back of the single Bad Girls (fantastic tune) and Double Bubble Trouble. This album sounds like a handful of ideas that don’t really gel with some bangers. So I looked up a bit more about it. This is when she started going on her spiritual journey. Is this the tipping point that where it all started to crumble? Perhaps. Turns out Julian Assange assisted with this album in points, coming to the studio and is thanked in the liner notes. MIA also described this album sounding like "Paul Simon on acid" in an interview. Girrrrrl. No! If I’d read that I would not have bought it.

It'll stay cos of the bangers. But as an album I don't think I'll be spinning this whole again for a while.

I suppose the one positive thing I can say about her is that she gives lie to the notion that anyone who is not sufficiently woke gets cancelled.
