Trying times aren't new

Ashford & Simpson - Come As You Are

We watched New Jack City last night. I'd never seen it before, as I recall. Nick Ashford popped up in a little cameo as the preacher. If I was going for an easy gag, I'd say it was a solid performance.

I picked this 1976  LP up at the now defunct Port Dock Market a few years ago for a dollar. It's a decent combination of Nick & Val's writing (mostly) and vocals and some top-rank jazz-funk session players (Eric Gale, Steve Gadd, Ralph MacDonald, Richard Tee), with the opener It'll Come, It'll Come, It'll Come being a stand-out slab of killer modern soul, which I made sure I bought on 7" too.

There is no title track on this album. The relationship between the cover picture and title is lost in time. The couple are wearing slightly odd outfits, but it's hard to determine from 2025 eyes if these are meant to be their everyday duds, cutting edge fashion or something else entirely.
