Stunned silence. It's like the thought never occurred to them that we could have enough. I thought all of economic theory was stupid then. By the time I got to university I just hated all the MBA types and thought they all had brain rot.

It's especially great, because deranged "steal from the poor to give to the rich" policies are always worth trying again, because maybe this next tax break for billionaires will finally trigger the magic, BUT it's also really stupid to suggest things like public housing, because some city tried that once (and massively underfunded it) and some unfortunate anecdotes resulted, proving that it would never work...
we have to find a better way to measure how well the economy is doing. and better places to get back better than inflation returns. long-term profitable companies indicate a less than competitive market. we shouldn't favor that because our savings depend on it.

It starts with taxing them, here in the Netherlands there are 3 progressive tax scales, highest is above 50% based on earnings, for a large part of my professional life I am in there and proud to pay it. The system show how we can keep up a good social security system. On top of that we pay an obligatory healthcare contribution and all our goods are taxed between 6 and 21%. Finally there is road tax for the cars you put on the road based on weight. It works!

Does the US not tax cars based on vehicle weight? That explains a lot. But it makes a lot of sense: the tax is used to maintain roads, and heavy vehicles do more damage to roads.

After two years in Israeli detention, Palestinian former detainee Ahmed Al-Siqali returned to Khan Younis in southern the Gaza Strip, expecting to be reunited with his six children.
Instead, he returned to six death certificates. His children were killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted their home while he was detained. His wife and one of his daughters survived the attack but were injured.

I feel the word "socialism" has long being used as a bogeyman, especially in the US. The easy association was with all their countries that declared themselves as being "socialist", and that failed usually, falling in some authoritorian regime - which can't be of any social utility.
Socialism is hard to apply with success to large communities, from what I've seen up to now. Maybe there's some connection with social groups theory, and the limited number of individuals involved.

Even today, people need to understand that sending a relative to the psych ward could mean a permanent end of the relationship in question. The only excuse I will accept is when this occurs in response to a physical or an armed assault on another person, nothing less.
When I was a teenager in the 1980's, we had real problems with psych facilities such as the Psychiatric Institutes of America aiming "programs" at parents of LGBTQ kids. These programs were aimed at harvesting all available health insurance money and carried the risk of wrecking lives or even forcing kids off this planet entirely. Even when kids survived with little damage, it made a lot of lifelong enemies.
She finally got kicked out of the insane asylum because she was deemed incurable. She went home & he locked her in the attic, nailed all windows up there shut. She managed to get a letter to her girlfriend who notified authorities & took him to court. She won, and went home to find him, her children, everything- gone.
Women weren’t allowed to own property.

I code in Perl, Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript, have also coded in Haskell and C# using these tools, and have dabbled in some GoLang and Rust. While I'm a better back-end developer, I'm full-stack: web browser UI through to designing the PCB to run it on, I've got abilities in all of it.
Right-clicking on AI text fields in Jira and selecting "Block Element" is now a muscle-memory reflex reaction, as it is for any other site I'm forced to use with intrusive LLM features. I will be leaving my workplace of nearly 15 years precisely because of LLM desecration.
Removal of LLMs would improve my life as I wouldn't be spending much of it fighting its persistent willy-waving.

I don't use ChatGPT, I use local AI models, and my honest answer is yes, with inconvenience.

I am NOT strong for my size but I can reach that and I know a guy with a truck that I never use.
30 years ago I was a young consultant. The client learned that we'd been instructed to only bill 40hrs/week even if we worked more. They also figured out I would stay late for an $11 large pizza and not get billed $125/hr by my firm.

I met Kevin four days later. Kevin owns a truck. Kevin does not own a truck for himself. Nobody owns a truck for themselves. Kevin owns a truck for a fifteen mile radius.
Inside I said: THIS MAN HAS TAKEN A VOW. HE DID NOT ANNOUNCE IT. HE SIMPLY PURCHASED A BED AND ACCEPTED THE CONSEQUENCES.
Kevin arrived on Saturday. He brought the truck. He also brought a second man.
I had not asked for a second man.
The second man's name is Tony. Tony came because Kevin came. Tony did not know me. Tony did not ask what we were moving. Tony brought gloves.

That is the price. That is the entire economy. The truck costs one pizza and the pizza is not negotiable and the pizza is also not expensive and everyone knows what size.

We ate on the floor because the sofa was against the wall and none of us wanted to be the first to sit on it.

It's wonderful. (These days I have appliances and furniture delivered. In my 20s, I knew a guy with a truck. One night my sister needed a piano moved from my place to her new place. Guys showed up with a truck, I cooked, and around 10 or so, they loaded the piano [upright, not grand] into the truck, my sister sat on a stool in the bed of the truck and played the piano as they drove off into the dark. It's possible wine was involved.)
I used to be that friend with the truck. Now I'm that friend who has the equipment, strong for his size, will accept pizza and beer, and will absolutely make the most of it.

I stopped going to family get-togethers a little over a year ago. My life has been so much more enjoyable not feeling the pressure to cook for and hang out with people I would normally have nothing to do with if they weren't family. They previously never called, texted, invited me to dinner, or even inquired about my life when they saw me, so I lost nothing at all. Highly recommend it!
I hope "One Nation" doesn't make our politics in Australia as toxic as it is in the US.

In Norway, they think forcing everyone to show “papers, please” to a big tech company just to have a chat online, forwarding a transcript of that chat to the government, and making all non-corporate alternatives (including this one) illegal, is perfectly reasonable and not outrageously totalitarian.

fwiw, there are extremely racist parties in the Nordics, and I've seen people break contact with family members that vote for them. But if you had asked me 15 years ago, I would have said that "that's not a thing here lol" as well

I emailed their customer service and I was told to call an 800 number. I tried calling, but I got a “The number you have dialled is unallocated” message from 3 different phones (by that time I already have moved my car to a different lot). (1/2)

This is only my own experience and does may not by applicable for other people. Keep that in mind.
If I want freedom, I go and enjoy free time with those I do enjoy.
If I don't want annoying services, I just vote with my wallet.

For many occasions, when the people tell me that I need to scan QR code to see menu at the restaurant or do something similar.
I just tell them "I don't have a telephone„
And they often get confused.
Some of the places they get me bypass all their services just because they don't know what to do and is too much to handle.
I got to drove some buses for free, because the bus driver didn't know what to do.
I get interrogated on the airport, in a much less time, also because there is much less information to be extracted.
I wasn't bothered by email and spam after all, just simply telling them I don't have telephone number, email address or home address and they leave me alone.
Of course there was a time that that was me who was trying to get their service and I need to be compliant.
But that's very much depends on situation and what I need.
i can even go even further on that (about Mastodon), i do not want to be forced to use its mobile app. I want a tutorial how to put my account on the website... I'm new at the #fediverse and I love it 
my phone broke, so I tried using just my laptop. I am a VERY tenacious chap. For instance, lived for just on 20 years with no physical ID, book, card, driver's license, the lot. A sim card was hard, bank.. ha ha not so hard to open and account with no hard ID. Eventually got one , needed it to see the Penquins at Boulders Beach, 3 years ago. Phone? One month. Had to get a phone....😭

We did the same thing at a Tim Horton's the other day. Then paid cash. But, been to a couple of fast food places recently where the menu is either a QR code or video display, no paper menu around, and they won't accept cash.

One change for me: I don't want to scan a QR code for anything. If it's in public then somebody's probably trying to scam me. If it's from a product or company, it's them trying to cheap out on an inconvenient digital menu or instructions instead of easy to use printed materials.

I generally don't want to be forced to use a phone and the internet when that can be avoided.
Thankfully QR code as the only way to see the menu at a restaurant isn't popular where I live. Most places have them, but most of those would also just give you paper menus by default. Also, you wouldn't lose much by not having a bank account at all. Almost everything can be paid in cash.

afaik Trump doesn't even enforce e-verify because wealthy business owners don't want him to. unless they can get robots to do it or enforce some kind of near or actual slavery, this isn't going to happen.

Farmers don't want to pay.. it breaks their economic model, and most people don't want to live in AG areas of the USA if they don't have to.

@aanee there is some tipping point beyond which women have an endurance advantage over men. I recall reading that they weren’t sure if women were more disciplined when training, or if being female is an inherent advantage. Can be both. I noticed men crash harder when hitting “the wall”, and experience much worse symptoms if they miss a meal. Women evolved to give “extra” to support pregnancy, and we also constantly having to work harder to achieve the same due to structural inequalities.

Endurance prioritizes other aspects. Where muscle mass is a bonus for sprints, more muscle mass means more energy burnt in the same time frame. It's like driving an F1 car for many kilometers: You have to refuel constantly. The fuel you'd need to carry to be able to sustain this is insane. So for endurance you want actually less muscle mass, estrogen or not.
However, estrogen also helps with using fat as a fuel source. Fat is a very efficient but long/slow burning energy resource. Exactly what you both want to have a bit of, for endurance, but also want to be able to make use of. Estrogen helps with that.
Other factors exist too, but that's one of the "inherent" ones.

Firstly, that's really cool. Secondly, I had no idea how far Hawaii was from the US (I'm from the UK though, so I haven't spent as much time looking at US maps.)

Virtually all land on earth is on the other side of the world from the center of the Pacific Ocean. At somewhere out there in the middle, there's a little string of islands called Hawaii. Maps often pull Hawaii and Alaska off and put them near the west coast. I’d mostly seen maps that showed Hawaii a couple of hundred miles from California and thought that’s where it was until I looked on a world map. They put a little box around them to show that they’ve been moved, but that doesn’t convey that Hawaii was moved further than the width of the map.
The same happens on a much smaller scale on this side of the pond. Maps of the UK that include the Channel Islands (which are very close to the coast of France) tend to put them in a little box near Plymouth. I assumed growing up that the reason they were British was because they much closer to Britain than France, which is not even slightly true.
This reminds me of the Antarctic Women’s Expedition in the 1990s where 3-4 women skied from the edge of one of the ice shelves to the South Pole with no assistance, no real injury, no fatalities. Every potential sponsor they approached wanted to add a man to the team. There was no big news of the event. But a bit later a couple of numb-nuts (guys) nearly died doing the same thing and got a freaking heros’ welcome.

Biologist here. Scientifically, the category "vegetable" doesn't exist, at least not in biology / botany. A tomato is a fruit, like many vegetables are. A fruit is the thing a plant produces to procreate. I don't know if "vegetable" is a legit category in nutritional science but I can confidently say that it doesn't make sense in botany and it doesn't exist.

TFG isn't a brilliant con-man. He isn't even a very good one. The brilliant con-men are the ones you can't see, who are making everyone racist, homophobic, transphobic and ethnocentric in the first place. The ones filling them with the hunger for profit, addicting them to the cheap thrill of being superior. You don't have to embrace a rabid dog with open arms, but you'll fail again and again trying to do something about the victims of a propaganda campaign, however nasty and rabid they may become. They're the symptom, not the problem.
So that's why I just kind of roll my eyes when people are like "It's because USAers are so racist they should just stop being racist."

It is also because those in power over decades did not make sure that the poor, the sick and the hungry were looked after.
That people who had good blue collar jobs in large corporations were not helped to adjust to those jobs being outsourced abroad.

This to a bigger extent in the US but also a pattern in Europe.

In the US (and the UK really) the dominant Left party has been pushing the message that "everything is fine" and "line goes up, so there's no problem" for a generation. The only voice (that's getting any attention from the media) is the right wing actually acknowledging the problems and then blaming others for it. In that setting, the outcome is unsurprising.
