I am producing and directing an animated series called "Lunatics!" about the first permanent settlers on the Moon, which attempts to be as realistic about this as possible, drawing on present-day technology, and much of the organizational culture around it.
It's a *free-culture* project: CC By-SA 4.0 licensed for episodes and most behind-the-scenes content. And an open movie project in that source files from Blender, Kdenlive, etc will be released with episodes. For this to be truly meaningful, we also rely on *free/open-source* software to produce it.

However, the money did not come, and so this became a volunteer/hobby like project -- and SO SLOW! The voice actors recorded what are now the first 4 episodes -- so that's "in the can".
Animation has been MUCH slower, and I finally managed to release a coherent episode THIS month in 2025, just for Patreon backers -- because it's not quite ready for public exposure.
My plan is to do what I can about that and then release it this April 12th -- a.k.a. "Yuri's Night", commemorating the 1961 first human flight into space (and orbit). Which seems pretty appropriate.
Then we start on episode two. Which I sincerely hope will take less time!

In it, we follow colonists Hiromi Lerner and her daughter Georgiana as they prepare and fly into space on a Soyuz spacecraft for the first leg of their journey to the Moon (which will continue in the next two episodes, picking up more characters along the way). There is actually very little science fiction in this first episode -- with very minor changes, this is all pretty much existing technology and settings (which required LOTS of research -- I am an American and have never been to Kazakhstan or Russia).
