I guess it is the concept that I find interesting given the numbers of people now living in high density urban environments. Thanks for sharing
in reply to iveyline

@iveyline I am spoiled living near a small city that's had a forester for long time, got interns to make a database of every street tree in the city, and consults with a top professor at my Uni on top of the hill.

We were early adopters of the Ginkgo before this problem was understood

purdue.edu/fnr/extension/ginkg…

so our (used to be) black neighborhood has excellent shade but an offensive odor at certain times of the year.

in reply to Paul Houle

I am lucky as I live in an area with a lot of trees and recovering indigenous forests around our village in the Far North of New Zealand. It makes you really appreciate how important natural diversity is
in reply to Paul Houle

I guess I am lucky to live in a small community that has many trees and volunteer supported initiatives to enhance natural generation of indigenous forests.

i'm more worried about android itself, including android open source project. as a worldwide basis, android essentially has a worldwide monopoly.

alphabet inc may steer android into less open direction favoring or forcing google components. in that point android practically is not open anymore.

Georgie's Anecdotes
Normally, I cook for myself. But when my parents have something interesting, they offer it to me.
Me. "I think I'll finish those egg noodles. They should still be good, right? When did you give them to me?"
Mom. "Two days ago. You don't remember."
"No. I don't remember the days of food, just that it was good." (starts singing, parodying The Twelve Days of Christmas) "On the first day of November, my mother fed to me... I don't remember, but I know it was very good."
Both of us laugh.
Me. "I've been watching too much theatre."
Mom praised me, but I forget her exact words.

There really must be a way to filter posts and ignore conversations here and/or via Tweesecake. I honestly don't care who uses what platform. If Mastodon, Blue Sky, Twitter, Facebook, Friendica, or some yet unknown service works for you, use it. Why should it even matter, other than to help new users who are transitioning to these sorts of sites? I certainly received wonderful help when I first came to Friendica last month from Facebook. But I wouldn't put anyone down for using some other site. It's just great that those of us in the Fediverse can all communicate with each other. AT least, those on Friendica can do so across many platforms. I'm not sure how it works with the others. In my case, I moved from Facebook due to their eliminating their Basic Mobile site (not app), and I found some lovely people here.

Note: Despite this negative post, the people at Newsmast do take accessibility seriously and have said they would fix the issues that I mentioned earlier. So please don't let this reflect on them. I only told them about these a few days ago. Today, I found the new ones. Maybe, their site is simply not working properly for anyone at the moment.
I found yet more inaccessibility with newsmast. I went there using Supermium, and hit all the "button" links until I found the one that was for communities. I tried to follow one by entering my Friendica.world information, and told it to authorise the interaction, which is all normal and is how I joined the others when I found myself tagged in them. Then, I was sent to a page that asked me about my birthday, location, etc. I had never seen this when joining a Newsmast page, but I began doing it. There was an edit box for country, but regardless of what I typed, it kept telling me that I needed to select a country. But there was no combobox to do so, just an edit box for typing. I closed the window and tried to return to the communities page, but it kept returning me to the form where I had to enter my location, even when I specifically removed that part of the url. I'm going to try it with Firefox, which is a bit more accessible with the site (it shows some links not all unlabelled buttons), but this shouldn't be happening. I also need to figure out how to delete the cookie from Supermium so that I can visit the site without the prompt.

Update. I just went there with Firefox. I was able to find and follow a community. Again, it sent me to the location page, even when I closed the initial one that opened. Now, whenever I go there, it does the same. I guess I have to use a different browser or virtual machine every time I want to join a community, or just type a large number of tags into one post, hoping that some are communities, so that they will boost my meaningless post, just so that I might be lucky enough to land on their follow page and not the location one again. Yes, that was sarcasm. In reality, I'll just go back to my other pages that list various tags and communities to join because they work.

Hi Georgiana, thanks again for your helpful feedback.

It sounds like you're trying to follow Communities using the Newsmast app which will ask for you to create an account.

As we spoke about the other day, we know there's issues here that we need to fix and hopefully will be able to soon!

If you want to follow our Community Feeds on vanilla Mastodon, you can do so by follow them directly from your current friendica[dot]world account. (1/2)

There's a list of Community Feed accounts available here: newsmast.community/about

@The Newsmast Foundation I was using your website, not an app. The same was true the other day. It was from the communities page. Now, whenever I try to go to the main page, I'm greeted with the form.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

We have apps on iOS, Android and on the web.

newsmast.org is a our web app which has a number of accessibility issues and bugs which we'll work on soon. For now, our Newsmast app has been placed to the side until we finish our Channel.org service (which we hope will bring in more funding).

To visit the Community Feeds on a plain Mastodon UI or through whichever application best suits you, you can access and follow them from this thread of posts: newsmast.social/@newsmast/1118… (1/2)

Dear Idiots Outside,

When I say drag is interesting, I'm not talking about drag racing down a residential street at almost midnight!

Yours in annoyance,
Georgiana

Just for context, some people do this all of the time around here, and it's ridiculous! I don't even live in a big city, and yet, they race down the street as if their lives depended on it, sometimes much later than this, at three or four in the morning! It sounds as if they're on motorbikes, not in cars.

For some reason, every time I see mention of rock tumblers, I'm tempted to buy one.

I don't really have any use or desire for smooth rocks, but somehow that's not even the point.

I think "I've got some rocks, why aren't I tumbling them? I could be tumbling those rocks right now!"

I had a really lovely walk this afternoon. The kids were walking home from school. I saw a brother and sister pair, they were so little, they must have been first grade and kindergarten, walking holding hands. Another brother and sister pair, she was walking and he was riding his bike excruciatingly slowly to keep pace with her. They got to an intersection and hesitated to cross. The truck driver who was there waited patiently until I caught up and escorted them across.

Occasionally, on Facebook, I would write funny things under the title Georgie's Anecdotes. So why not continue the tradition here?

Georgie's Anecdotes
My parents have been together for thirty-five years. They had a civil union in 2007 and were finally able to marry in 2013. Both times, my own excitement was contagious, to the point that they wondered if they or I were more excited! Today, both made me laugh. I wished Mom a happy wedding anniversary. She said she had forgotten and asked "how did you remember that?" I said "I always remember important things. Later, she spoke with Joanie, and she didn't even know today's date! Usually, she's the one to say it to Mom first. This year, I beat both of them!
