The Elephas maximus borneensis or Borneo (Pygmy) Elephant resides in Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia, being found in the Deramakot Forest Reserve, the Tabin Wildlife Reserve, and the Ulu Kalumpang and Segama Forest Reserves. It’s unknown if they are indigenous to Borneo, or were introduced by Sultan Bantilan Muizzud-Din, in 1750. These adorable, baby-faced animals, are the world’s smallest-known species of elephant, at lengths of 4.11 to 8.6ft, stand about 5ft tall, and weigh up to 4,000 pounds.

Rufous Flycatcher

Large flycatcher restricted to dry lowland forest in northwestern Peru, especially in areas with abundant mesquite and acacia. Well named; no other flycatcher in range is similarly colored. Also note the grayish crown that can be raised slightly, forming a peak. Gives a variety of calls including wheezy squeaks, whistles, churs, and sharp chips.

🌊 After Puerto Rico’s devastating hurricanes in 2017, researchers found that communities near coral reefs experienced less destruction. Now, federal investments in reef restoration are on the rise, recognizing reefs as natural barriers that protect coastal communities from storm surges. Protecting coral reefs not only saves lives but also reduces disaster recovery costs. 🌍

With the plethora of horrible things in the world, I thought I’d share something good…

The Crested ibis, or Toki, is a bird that went extinct about 40 years ago on Japan’s Sado Island.

Later, seven Toki were discovered in China. And thanks to conservation efforts, there are now over 500 Tokis sharing rice and land with the people of Sado. Bravo!

What happens when wildland fire reaches the city?

"Wildfire" is the word we tend to use when we talk about what Los Angeles has been dealing with the past week.
But Lori Moore-Merrell, the U.S. Fire Administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency used a different word, when she spoke to NPR this morning.

She described a "conflagration." Saying they're not wildland fires with trees burning. They're structure to structure fire spread.

They may have started at the suburban fringe, but they didn't stay there. Which prompts a question: what happens when fire meets city?

Carunculated Fruit-Dove

A unique small, colorful fruit-dove confined to Obi island. Pale gray head contrasts with mostly emerald-green body, except for gray markings on the wings and back, a deep maroon belly patch, and a lemon-yellow vent and undertail. An odd, fleshy wattle of protruding yellowish skin above the bill (“caruncles”) is distinctive. Found in canopy of forest, forest edge, and nearby secondary growth in the lowlands. Gives a distinctive soft, deep, guttural call, “gu-rOW,” the first note often soft and hard to hear.

One peculiar Christmas custom was the boy bishop. Between St Nicholas's Day ( December 6th) and the Feast of Holy Innocents (December 28th) a cathedral choirboy would take over all the duties of his bishop except for saying mass. He preached sermons and - accompanied by his friends dressed as priests - performed circuits of the city, blessing the inhabitants. Some adult priests joined in the role reversal by dressing as choristers. Though controversial for its apparent mockery of the clergy, the boy bishop tradition was extremely popular and was not stamped out until the reign of Elizabeth I. A tomb in Salisbury Cathedral - bearing an effigy of a miniature bishop - is said to be the grave of a boy bishop who died in office. Driver crashes through where bike lane should have been, hits house.

"Thursday night, neighbors said a driver veered off the road and into the side of a home...“If it had been protected, then there's a good chance that that car would have stayed in the street, and wouldn't have come up over the sidewalk and into the building,” said David Chen."

No word on whether the house was wearing dark clothing or looking at its phone.

I'm having my own little party here. I just finished a glass of wine and am listening to all sorts of lovely classical Viennese music! Right now, it's mostly dance pieces, but I'll probably listen to a bit of Mozart and Haydn, too, if I don't get caught up in an operetta or a series of waltzes! I love this sort of thing. But the waltzes are drawing me in. haha who can resist their temptation? Happy New Year to all!
