Big News

Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) has just launched its own dedicated Mastodon server, social.freedom.press: freedom.press/about/announceme…

"The Fediverse is nonalgorithmic and community-driven, without the potential algorithmic distortions or content suppression imposed by centralized platforms."

All FPF-related activity on Mastodon is now accessible from a single Fediverse server: @securedrop @dangerzone @foiafeed

Hopefully this move will be an example to other organizations.

Yay!!! I got Tweesecake to work! I couldn't understand, for the life of me, what was going on! I thought the folder was corrupted, so I redownloaded it, and whenever I started it, it kept saying "Welcome to Tweesecake", and then "Config". Then, when I tried to navigate through the window, it completely disappeared. So I thought, maybe, they had discontinued their service, but that was not the case. It turned out that this is not a fully portable app. Unlike the ones at portableapps.com, and like both Serpent UXP and IceDove UXP, it stores information in a separate folder and not just the main one. I may change this behaviour in the future. For now, I deleted the separate Tweesecake folder (in App Data), and restarted the program. And now I have a perfectly functioning Windows client, including the ability to edit my posts!

#accessibility #blind #happy #portableapp #Tweesecake #Windows

Update. check comments. As usual, it's not fully accessible. Why, I don't know.
I just found something wonderful! It's an automatic way for me to find groups that interest me. Basically, when I add a hash tag to a post, sometimes, I get added to a community. For instance, the theatre tag added me to their community. There, I find all sorts of related posts. But I don't take their advice about not adding said groups to my timeline, because I want to see what others have to say! Regardless, along with the pages I found for topics, etc. this is a great way to add interests, and with luck, to make new friends!

Hi again Georgiana, thank you so much for explaining your experience in detail.

The Newsmast app is, unfortunately, behind where we would like it to be in terms of accessibility. We have plans to improve this (alongside fixing a few of the bugs which have been lingering) but we first need to find some funding!

For that reason, Channel.org - our new (paid) service for orgs - is our current focus. (1/2)

We hope to return to the Newsmast app soon. When we do, we will be sure to use this description you have provided.

For now, you should be able to use the Community Feeds by following the Feed accounts - we know you said you didn't mind the high activity but feel free to put them in a list! That way they should work with a client that suits your needs more closely.

If you're interested can follow our progress on our co-founders blog: blog-pat.ch/ (2/2)

I love this site. They have articles about all sorts of different topics! They also have some wonderful gifts that go well beyond the ordinary. This is also the home of Gastro Obscura, where they write about the most fascinating, delicious, and at times, bizarre foods from around the world. No, I don't work for them. I'm just a fan.

Update. I can read my posts (and some others) on the Local page and option of both Semaphore and TWBlue. However, I cannot reply on Semaphore. It shows a reply button, but when I press it, there is no edit box for me to type into. I also can't edit my posts there, but I already knew that. It's one of the things that Enafore was supposed to have fixed.

in reply to Georgiana Brummell

Never mind my having Countess Maritza or The Land of Smiles. I just have individual songs. And from the first, I have an album, but again, it's just songs. I can understand doing this with acoustic recordings, but it's annoying with later ones. Novello's work immediately comes to mind, but I've seen it done even with Gilbert and Sullivan, by no less than d'Oyly Carte themselves! The singing is beautiful, of course, but where is the dialogue! Fortunately, I do have perfect recordings of Die Fledermaus. They're probably videos, but being blind, I have no idea. It's all audio to me.

I need to update this with more discoveries. But here is a post I made some time ago about Received Pronunciation. More specifically, it's about Upper RP, my favourite kind. This is when the English language comes alive and sounds like music. I could listen to RP all day long, provided it's Upper or at least Conservative. I have no use for Contemporary. It gives me a headache. Any other suggestions are warmly welcomed, and if you yourself speak in true RP, I would love to get to know you.

To medical professionals, there may be different nuances here. This is the popular understanding.
I'm not religious or superstitious, but this is very odd. Ivor Novello died in 1951 of a heart attack. Noel Coward, one of his best friends, died in 1973, 51 years ago, of a heart attack. Christopher Hassall, Novello's librettist, died in 1963, at the age of 51, also of a heart attack! Breakin the 51 theme but remaining with the health one, Clifton Webb, friend of Coward, died of a heart attack, as did both Gilbert and Sullivan, who influenced Novello! As for Hassall, I now have all sorts of lovely things to download from him! His RP accent is absolutely beautiful, as are his tones, and he is very much worth seeking out.

This is just a test. Tweesecake still isn't working after many hours. I even restarted my computer a few times. I'm using TWBlue, which, while it won't allow me to edit posts (feature not included/not due to inaccessibility), it's still quicker to read, reply, and post to things here. If Tweesecake doesn't start working again, I really hope that the designers of TWBlue would consider adding the option to edit posts. It's extremely basic and would be very helpful.

It seems that I am unable to edit posts on the main Friendica page. No matter what I do, the edit link, or whatever it is, does nothing. Fortunately, I am able to do so on Pachli. However, there is no keyboard shortcut available for this, which forces me to use the touchscreen. Likewise, there are no hotkeys to easily navigate posts etc. I wouldn't mind it if I could easily navigate my timeline, etc, as I can on the website, by using headings and so on. But at least, I can now edit my posts with something other than Tweesecake..

Since I've been writing a lot about accessibility and the annoyance of modern websites and programs today, I wanted to show you a perfect example of a website that is accessible! Every single thing here reads perfectly. Everything makes sense and is usable. I have never had a single headache using this site. I wish these developers could be hired to work on other things, since they very clearly know what they're doing!

If any Dreamwidth developers are here, thank you for making at least one technological thing in my life easy and enjoyable! At least I don't have to worry about your site suddenly becoming a nightmare, like Facebook. Now could you please consider making a social networking site or at least client for Friendica/Mastodon?

I have no idea why on Earth this had a sensitive content label, but anyway. That explained a little. I am not a programmer, just a blind user of NVDA who is sick of this rubbish. But yes, even then, things weren't standard. There are many programs, even from the past, that were far from accessible. But many were, and most did use the standard menus. Many still do. As for websites and certain programs that have adopted this other approach, Firefox was the first one I saw doing it, after version 28. The last version of Thunderbird with normal menus was 60. On both, menus can still be accessed with the alt key and navigated with arrows and tabs, but they are read like webpages, and the options look like links in some cases, all with no buttons to confirm or cancel things. Unfortunately, I don't know of a browser that doesn't do this, including Serpent UXP and Supermium.

Yay! This is much better!

"I'd use blue but right now it doesn't support edits to my knowledge, which is a dealbreaker. Cake and Enafore are the only accessible Windows clients I know of that do. Enafore is pinafore which merged in all the accessibility fixes of Semaphore and is more compatible with Glitch, which is what places like the cave have switched to anyway. So unless Semaphore starts to have a major uptick in development it should be regarded as superseded by Enafore."

Does anyone know what is going on with Tweesecake? It worked well until today. Now, when I start it, it shows the welcome screen and says "config", but when I try to use the arrows to select my Friendica profile, the whole program disappears. Then, when I try to restart it, I have to go to the Task Manager and end the task tree, or it will tell me that it's still running, even though I don't see it when I alt+tab through my open programs. For the first time in my life, I have to say that a phone application is better than a Windows client or even website, as I have full access to everything on Friendica with Pachli and not on Tweesecake, Semafore, or Phanpy. Obviously, I can edit things, from posts to my profile on the Friendica site, but it's not as intuitive as it could be and has strange menus and such, instead of normal links.
That is why I was seeking a simpler alternative.

Okay. So how am I supposed to edit thing? I thought it would be decent, with a normal edit link or button. But of course, no one thinks with common sense these days! I tried the menu and selected "more" and "edit" but it did nothing! I tried looking for an edit box and found nothing. Then, I selected the checkbox and still nothing. But of course, it had a delete button. I guess it was too difficult to make an edit one, too.

I found that many pages and groups from Facebook that I like are on Flipboard. I've heard of it, but only in passing. Apparently, there's a way for me to connect a Flipboard account to Mastodon, which probably means I can do it with Friendica as well.

How do I post to an instance that I follow? That may not be the right word. It's not an entire instance, like friendica.world. It's someone or a group on that instance. These terms are quite confusing, since some of them are actual groups, whereas others are individuals, and still others are organisations but aren't technically groups. Many come from Mastodon.

I would like to settle something, once and for all. I think I may have asked about it this previously but not very clearly. On sites such as Livejournal, I enter interests seperated by a comma. For instance
books, classical music, cats
Some sites use brackets to separate each word or phrase. On Friendica, I followed their advice to use commas, but phrases, such as classical music, always show up as separate words i.e. "classical, music" when I read my profile, thinkint that was the seperator, but it did nothing. I want to know how to do this properly, since it may affect both how I find people and how people find me. How do I write these keywords, and is it the same for my profile as when I search by interest or for posts and people?

#formatting #friendica #friends #keywords #searching

in reply to Georgiana Brummell

I tried searching for things using the number sign and the word. I tried "Windows XP", "Windows 7", and, since I used it in our example, "classical music". I got nothing, except when typing "classical" and "XP" on their own. But I did see that the tags for certain posts had single words with no space i.e. Windows7. Is that how I'm supposed to do it? Also, does the search box on the main page only search on this particular instance, or all of Friendica?
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

Well, it finally happened. Facebook did, in fact, discontinue the Basic Mobile site. So I will be posting on here and Dreamwidth a lot more from now on. Speaking of which, I wrote alot there over the last few days, filling in entries from earlier in the month. Anyone can read or comment on my entries, whether or not he is a member. I also have an extensive profile there, as well as a post containing links to essays on various topics. I will be sharing particular links with all of you that you may read or ignore, as you wish.

I just found a client called TWBlue. It seemed to be absolutely perfect! Then, I tried to post with it. Not only can I not hit enter to go down a line because it posts, but it literally has no function to allow me to edit my posts or comments! I can understand the first, since it was designed to work with Mastodon, but the second makes no sense to me. Still, these people are extremely serious about accessibility and actually care about user suggestions, so O I may write to them. I would love for these features to be added, since it looks like a full client.
