Snoring Rail

A large, little-known flightless rail from Sulawesi. Note the heavy bill, orange in females, duller in males, and the tailless appearance. Gray with an orange nape and contrastingly rufous wings. Note dense barring on belly. A rarely seen terrestrial bird of densely-vegetated forest floor in lowlands and foothills; sometimes occurs in nearby dense scrub too. Much larger and heavier-billed than Slaty-breasted Rail, and further differs in showing conspicuous rufous wings. Vocalizations include a low-pitched “mmmm” and wheezing and snoring noises.

A rebus is a puzzle that uses pictures to replace letters, sounds or words. A common use was in heraldry. So, the medieval Bishop Walter Lyhart had a stag (or hart) lying down in water. The three Southwest Air ladies who helped me just now are freaking angels.

I reserved the wrong date for my ticket home. When she said my reservation was for March I broke into tears and whispered, My father just died i have to get home.

Immediately two other women came over helping the first lady navigate their system to rebook me. I didn't even ask. One of the women was watching me and also crying and she had to walk away. She whispered to her coworker, This is too much.

There was now a small crowd of southwest folks grabbing my bag, making sure I was on preboard while I was just hunched over, crying quietly. All I could think was how if I fucked this up my sister would never forgive me.

One of the women grabbed my hand and said, We did it. You're rebooked for LA at 1 and you're coming back on Saturday. Don't worry. You're going home.

I could barely thank them. I started to walk away then came back and got their names.

In 1909 the Lightning Benz became the first European car to break the 200 Km/h barrier. With a four-cylinder engine, a displacement of 21.5 litres and 200 hp the "Blitzen Benz" broke the magic mark of 200 km/h at Brooklands in 1909 and was the fastest thing on earth. With 228.1 km/h in 1911 it was even twice as fast as an airplane of the time.

Roman Winged Phallus (1st-2nd Century AD), carved from a piece of bone, found on 1st June 2009, in field walking at Wetheringsett cum Brockford, Suffolk 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧, near the old Roman Road to Caister Saint Edmunds, this type of artifact was often associated with Roman Army (40-400 AD).

These are thought to be protective charms and those with suspension attactments possibly worn as a fertility charm, sold with the PAS report SF-EE7435, which includes line drawings.

Long-billed Plover

Medium-sized plover. Breeds in flowing rivers with shingle islands and banks; outside of breeding season, can be found in slower rocky rivers, as well as flooded fields and lakeshores. Resembles a larger version of Little Ringed Plover—similarly brown, white below, with black neck band, white collar, and white supercilium—but lacks the yellow eyering of Little and is much larger, with longer wings and tail giving Long-billed a very different shape. Sometimes difficult to spot, as it is well camouflaged among rocks and pebbles, and often first detected by its sharp alarm call, “piwee”, given when flushed. Longer bill not an especially reliable feature for field identification.

While originally it was mean solar time at 0° longitude, precise measurements of the Sun are difficult. Therefore, UT1 is computed from a measure of the Earth's angle with respect to the International Celestial Reference Frame, called the Earth Rotation Angle (which serves as the replacement for Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time).

You remember #Apple scanning all images on your #mobile device?

If you have an #Android #phone, a new app that doesn't appear in your menu has been automatically and silently installed (or soon will be) by #Google. It is called #AndroidSystemSafetyCore and does exactly the same - scan all images on your device as well as all incoming ones (via messaging). The new spin is that it does so "to protect your #privacy".

You can uninstall this app safely via System -> Apps.

So February has hurried in and with it longer days and more sun. It is still frosty in the mornings and the ground is still hard. It's the tired part of winter, a season that began at the beginning of November with plans for feasting and fun. Now it's false spring days and a stop/start time for the easing into summer.

African Pipit

The default pipit across much of Africa. Brown above and pale below, with a streaked back, well-marked face, and white outer tail feathers. There is considerable geographic variation, from pale and sandy to rich brown and rufous. Found in a variety of open and usually grassy habitats, both near water and in dry areas. Call is a sneezing “tzsht”. Song comprises consecutive series of rattles, given in flight. Very similar to other pipits; some of the key features to look for include the yellow base of the bill, streaked back, and white outer tail feathers.

Blacksmith Lapwing

A smart-looking gray, black, and white lapwing; white crown and black face and breast. Immatures are mostly brownish. It is a common breeding resident that is strongly tied to wetlands, although it may also disperse into flooded grassland and adjacent dryland habitats to forage. Bold and brave parents, Blacksmith Lapwings have been known to launch defensive attacks on African Elephants and harass aerial threats like rollers or raptors in order to protect their young. A loud ringing “tink-tink-tink” call is uttered in series, like a blacksmith hammering on an anvil.

This recent video from YouTuber Chuppl highlights a 2023 pre-print estimating people have wasted as many as 819 million hours solving reCAPTCHA since Google acquired it in 2009, as spotted earlier by Boing Boing. Olla update: I’ve had my #garden ollas in place for 2 weeks now and they are still half to 2/3 full of water. The seedlings around them have grown steadily. We’ve had light rain once in the last two weeks. The true test will be when temperatures start to soar, but so far this #irrigation method has been impressively easy & efficient. Thank you for posting this! I accidentally discovered this with a terracotta pot my jade plant was in (water from the bottom up in a bowl) and I was so confused how the water was going straight through the terracotta into the soil. Good to know I didnt imagine all that and terracotta really does work like that. If I still had my outdoor planters I'd try your technique myself.

One of the world's eeriest war memorials has to be the Ossuary of Douaumont, Verdun, northern France. A large, oblong building holds the remains of 130,000 unidentified World War I soldiers. It is possible to look through small openings in the base and see masses of bones and skulls. Above the skeleton-filled basement is a cloister with a long hall with inscriptions on the walls. In the centre is a 150-foot tower, in which a rotating red-and-white 'lantern of the dead' shines its beacon over the surrounding former battlefields at night. The tower also contains a 2-tonne bronze 'death bell', which is rung on official occasions.
