The Cat News team have made an amazing discovery. Pippin (BC, Canada) not only has been sleeping on the laundry, he also now smells like fabric softener. He is a nicely scented cat now.

Penguin has slightly more manageable hordes. Her primary, and originally secret, horde is string, especially string of the silver string variety. I discovered it on accident during early covid after early masks shortages. My mom has attempted to sew some, but the string she used didn’t work very well. Penguin ended up digging it out of the garbage and secretly played with it for months.

The Classical Music group put this one in my head today by mentioning the Merry Widow. I refuse to take responsibility for the humming, singing, and smiling! Then again, Lehar did write Land of Smiles as well. Here, then, is the Merry Widow Waltz.

Lehar and Tauber worked so closely that it was like Novello and Hassall, only instead of writing the lyrics, Tauber sang them, and very beautifully, I might add. Unmistakable medium-sized parrot found from eastern Panama into Colombia and Venezuela. Green body with a bright yellow head and white eyering. Also note yellow shoulder and blue flight feathers. In flight, look for red underwing coverts and short square tail. Uncommon in forests and edge, mainly in the lowlands and foothills, up to around 1,600 m.

Mary Douglas Leakey was born #OTD in 1913.
She discovered the 1st fossilised Proconsul skull, an extinct ape which is now believed to be ancestral to humans. She discovered the robust Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. She developed a system for classifying the stone tools found at Olduvai. She discovered the Laetoli footprints, and at the Laetoli site she discovered hominin fossils that were more than 3.75 million years old.

Ah but for those of us Brits of a certain age, Jersey will always be associated with a TV detective series from the 80's set on the island - Bergerac. Lots of glamour and yachts....

@JimmyB I don’t know about the UK, but in the US there are university and some government agricultural bodies called extensions and we can send them a sample of our soil for analysis or get a testing kit for a relatively cheap price. Here’s a link the Rutgers U program:
