In eastern Ukraine, a Shubin is a spirit found in the mines. Legends speak of good and bad Shubin. Some think Shubin was the name of a miner who died and who now walks the mines protecting miners by burning off pockets of hazardous gas. Others say the Shubin was a wicked master of the mines who murdered several men in the dark. Yet another view is that he is the vengeful spirit of a new miner, who was tricked into going into a potentially dangerous area to check if it was safe for the other workers. It wasn't and he was killed by a gas explosion. His ghost now haunts the mines, seeking revenge by causing accidents. The Shubin is said to be clad in a fur coat and to carry a torch. #Ukraine #mining #ghosts #folklore #paranormal #weird #gothic #psychogeography

Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences offers a master gardener pollinator habitat certification. You have to provide food, water, and shelter, as well as reduce invasives and pesticide use.
The planning worksheet is great for anyone who doesn't know where to start. See the recommended #NativePlants list for people in the PA/Mid-Atlantic region.
The certificate (and sign) could prove useful for code enforcement/neighbors/HOA problems.

The first of Charles Dickens' literary sketches generally titled The Uncommercial Traveller appears in his magazine All the Year Round.
He seems to have chosen the title and persona of the Uncommercial Traveller as a result of a speech he gave on 22 December 1859 to the Commercial Travellers' School in London, in his role as honorary chairman and treasurer.

Charlotte Brontë's novel, Villette, appears, its publication having been delayed in order to allow Ruth, by her friend Elizabeth Gaskell, to be given a head start in the press.
Villette was Charlotte Brontë's third & last novel published during her life. It was preceded in writing by The Professor (her posthumously published 1st novel, of which Villette is a reworking, though still not very similar), Jane Eyre, & Shirley.

Fun piece of trivia: The letters that spell typewriter all lie on the top row of the QWERTY keyboard.
Although the origin story may not be true.
"In 1867 a typewriter pioneer first set up the QWERTY arrangement so his salesman could peck out the word typewriter quickly and easily."

It's been used in attempts to determine the chronology of seabed sediment deposition. As far as practical chemistry is concerned, however, it's strictly a man-made element.

A neutron star merger produces a black hole, but also a significant amount of ejected matter. We know that a lot of stuff must be shot out because astronomers can see radiation from this material, which is observed as a kilonova.
