#OTD in 1813.
Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice is first published in London. A second edition follows in November.
The novel was originally published anonymously, as were all of Austen's novels. However, whereas her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility was presented as being written "by a Lady," Pride and Prejudice was attributed to "the Author of Sense and Sensibility".

Black-throated Canary
A small, nondescript, streaky gray-brown seedeater with a lemon-yellow rump, white tail tips, and a variable dark throat (more obvious in the male). Pairs and flocks frequent thorn scrub, broadleaf woodland, scrubby patches in upland grassland, cultivation, and gardens, where they forage on the ground and in small shrubs and grass. The song is a complex collection of whistles and warbles, and calls include a simpler melodic one- or two-note “soooe-sweee.” The similar Reichenow’s Seedeater and Yellow-rumped Serin differ from Black-throated Canary by lacking a dark patch on the chin and throat.

Blue-cheeked Jacamar
Distinctive, oddly proportioned bird, with a small head and long needle-like bill. Green above and rusty below, with blue cheeks. The amount of black on the yellow bill is variable. Usually seen sitting quietly in the lower levels of humid forest and sometimes seasonally flooded forests, where it captures prey by flycatching. Sings a high-pitched “peea peea-pee-pee-te-t-t-e’e’e’e’e’e” that accelerates gradually and ends with a rattling trill.

‘Nine Winter-y Words to Warm the Cockles’
from BBC Radio 4
“Now here's a word to love on a frosty morning: “apricity” is a now obsolete word that means “the warmth of the sun in winter”. E.G.: “The apricity of today's sun feels like a warm blanket.” It was in 1623 that lexicographer Henry Cockeram recorded (or invented) the word in his book The English Dictionarie: Or, An Interpreter Of Hard English Words. It never stuck. Perhaps it's about time we brought it back.”

in reply to J blue • • •This is a real champ of a plant. You could run over it with a lawnmower and it would grow back. And that’s where you might find them, in overgrown weedy lawns.
They can grow in a variety of conditions. Pictures are from the same batch of seeds I saved. The first pic is one plant grown in sun with lots of fertilizer, the second is no fertilizer, terrible soil, next to a street in shade. It will still produce fruit.
