The medieval toilet or latrine, then called a privy or garderobe, was a primitive affair, but in a castle, one might find a little more comfort and certainly a great deal more design effort than had been invested elsewhere. Practicality, privacy, and efficient waste disposal were all considered and, even today, one of the most prominent and easily identifiable features of ruined medieval castles is the latrines which protrude from their exterior walls.

Ethiopian Bible - considered as the oldest and most complete 'Bible' on earth :
The world’s earliest illustrated Christian book has been saved by a British charity which located it at a remote Ethiopian monastery.
The Garima Gospels are named after a monk who arrived in African country in 5th Century AD, (Abba Garima arrived from Constantinople in 494 AD). The beautifully illustrated, colours are still vivid and thanks to Ethiopian Heritage Fund have been conserved.

One of the most beautiful and evocative parts of the Vatican Museums is certainly the long corridor of 120 meters in length and six in width that leads to the Sistine Chapel adorned with geographical maps.
The Gallery of geographic maps, commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII, was built between 1580 and 1585. The frescoes were made by Italian and Flemish artists under the direction of Ignazio Danti, mathematician, astronomer and cosmographer.

Fuscous Honeyeater
Small, plain honeyeater; almost entirely a bland, unmarked, olive-brown with subtle yellow patch on the neck. Adult’s bill is entirely black, whereas juvenile has yellow base to bill plus a yellow eyering. Typically found in dry eucalypt forest; tends to move down from higher altitudes in the winter months. Found in eastern Australia.

Gray-hooded Parrotbill
Gray head, white eyering, and frequently raised bushy crest set this parrotbill apart from others in its range. Inhabits isolated mountaintop forests, where it forages in small flocks in dense stands of bamboo. Gives low, insect-like trills. Highly restricted in range; found reliably on less than a dozen mountaintops, and unrecorded from valleys and lowlands in between.

A distinctive large glossy-black flycatcher with a pale bluish-ivory bill. Female has a cinnamon head, a buffy chest, white underparts and brown upperparts. Dependent on native moist forest between 80 and 400 meters of elevation. Song is strong, loud, complex, and melodious, with a repeated “wip-woorly” phrase.

Rufous Flycatcher
Large flycatcher restricted to dry lowland forest in northwestern Peru, especially in areas with abundant mesquite and acacia. Well named; no other flycatcher in range is similarly colored. Also note the grayish crown that can be raised slightly, forming a peak. Gives a variety of calls including wheezy squeaks, whistles, churs, and sharp chips.

The Crested ibis, or Toki, is a bird that went extinct about 40 years ago on Japan’s Sado Island.
Later, seven Toki were discovered in China. And thanks to conservation efforts, there are now over 500 Tokis sharing rice and land with the people of Sado. Bravo!
