Restoring an old Mad River Malecite 1/x

The boat was stored outside for a long time and not used much. Here it is still with the previous owner.
A red canoe lies on a meadow. The colour and wood of the boat are badly weathered. There are light-coloured stickers on the front of the boat; a Mad River logo and the word Malecite to the right of it.

The gunwales were eaten away by fungus and almost fell off by themselves. Some of the fittings are also very rotten. The laminate inside looks great.
A section from the edge of the canoe. A piece of gunwale is missing, the existing wood looks bad. The laminate inside looks good and a warning sticker is also in good condition.

Step 1: Remove seats, thwarts and gunwales
Step 2: sanding, a real shit job
An old, red canoe lying upside down in front of a brick wall. The boat is very weathered and quite white. On the right-hand side, one part has been worked on and is clearly redder.

Canoeing today: on the lake

Photo of the lake taken from the canoe. At the bottom right is the tip of the boat with yellow floats. Then a lot of lake and trees on the horizon. Sky cloudy and gray.

Today we did a little training to get back into shape after a few weeks off due to illness. Playing in the wind for two hours on the local lake was enough to make me tired.

Apart from me, there were only a few disk golfers fishing for discs, otherwise there was nothing going on...

River Ilme

River Oste

We had a great day on the river. But we had to climb a lot and it took us a lot of time (the picture is from an easy spot). The bank was soft from all the water and the trees were slippery from the frosty coating. The freezing fog was eating away at our faces and making our fingers capable of handling. So halfway along the route, I called a buddy to pick us up. The right time to end a tour like this is when you are still able to act.

Incidentally, everything was well thought out and planned. We know the route and have exit points at short intervals. The buddy on land was ready to pick us up. And of course we had the right equipment to go swimming in winter and to rescue ourselves. And yet, "biting through” is something for fitness studios, on the river it can quickly cost you your life
