BUONANOTTE, SIGNOR LENIN

… anextraordinaryandordinarylife…

Hi

Did you see my email the other week? I wrote to you because our soils, rivers, and food are facing a crisis that we simply can’t ignore.

Over 63,000 people have already signed the petition calling on the government to stop this scandal. But we’re not there yet. Can you help us reach 70,000 in the next two weeks so we can make the minister listen when the petition is handed in to the Government?

Right now, millions of tonnes of sewage sludge full of forever chemicals, microplastics, and toxins are being spread across British farmland. Farmers are told it’s safe. It isn’t. It’s poisoning the very ground that grows our food and seeping into the rivers that flow through our countryside.

Will you take just one minute today to add your name? Every signature counts — and together, we can make this impossible for the government to ignore.

We can fix this. We can protect our farmers, our soils, and our rivers.

Thank you for caring,

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

PS: Below is the email I sent the other week...

Hi

I’ve spent my life cooking and working with farmers to get the best, most honest food onto our plates. I know that great food comes from healthy soils and clean water, but both are now under serious threat.

Right now, millions of tonnes of sewage sludge (that's the solid stuff left over from the sewage treatment process) are being spread across Britain’s farmland. Farmers are told that it’s safe fertiliser, but it’s packed with forever chemicals, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, microplastics, and other toxins. It is poisoning our soils and flowing straight into our rivers.

We can fix this. We can have clean water, healthy soil, and honest farming, but only if we demand it. Will you add your name?

What water companies are doing is unacceptable. That’s why together with River Action and Greenpeace, I’m calling on the government to clamp down on the toxic sludge being spread on UK farms. And a guarantee that water companies won’t pass the cost of their mess onto us bill-payers!

Over 50,000 people have already signed the petition demanding action to end this outrageous pollution scandal. That’s an incredible show of public passion.

But we can’t stop there. To make the government sit up, listen and act, we need to make our call for change impossible to ignore. Can you help us reach 60,000 signatures by the end of the week? And maybe a whole lot more? This is such a crazy, unacceptable situation – but also, a winnable argument. And your voice can help us win it.
Sign the petition
Every signature adds to the pressure. So please, sign and share today. Together, we can force the government to act fast.

Thank you for standing up for our rivers, our farmers, and our food.

I had wanted to go to South Korea for a long time, for several reasons: to see an old friend again, to understand the world of Korean coffee, which plays an important role in the lives of Koreans, and to learn about Buddhism.

I like to volunteer when I travel because I find it one of the best ways to understand the local society and culture I am going to immerse myself in, as I love the world of coffee, I always try to combine the two. Recently, I volunteered on a plantation in northern Thailand and three years ago at a coffee roastery in Bangkok.

Before leaving for Seoul, where I wanted to spend a couple of months, I started sending emails and messages on Instagram to every café and roastery in the city in the hope of finding someone willing to give me a place to stay or food in exchange for free labour, I wanted to get into the South Korean coffee industry, but despite my efforts and hundreds of messages, I couldn’t find anything. The trip to Asia would go ahead anyway, and if I couldn’t do it by working in a coffee shop, I would look for something else.

Time passes and I have an idea that is definitely inspired by something greater than myself, fascinated by Buddhism, even though I don’t consider myself a Buddhist, and fascinated by the lifestyle of monks, I think, why not try spending some time in a temple, considering that I practise meditation daily and many of the principles of Buddhism? it could be an opportunity to meditate in a more spiritual setting, understand more about this religion and, in my free time, visit cafés and deepen my interest in South Korean coffee culture.

I am at Shanghai airport waiting to board the plane that will take me back to London when I notice an European guy staring at me incessantly, I pretend not to notice, but out of the corner of my eye I keep checking to see if he has stopped, No, he is still there staring at me, in cases like this, the possibilities are endless, has he fallen in love? Does he know me? Is he a bit crazy? Does he want to ask me something? Who knows, but I’m not in the mood to find out, there’s no need because he breaks the ice, He calls me over and asks if we’ve met somewhere before, he thinks he’s spoken to me before but can’t remember where, I have no idea, but looking at him, I realise his face is familiar, he looks like someone I exchanged glances with while visiting an ancient Chinese palace, I ask him if that’s when he says he spoke to me, but it’s not, so where? I ask him where he lives and he says London, I start to think about it and realise that I probably made him a coffee somewhere or he’s a friend of friends, I try to figure it out and ask him which is his favourite coffee shop, he replies that when he lived in Islington, he used to go to Devotion Coffee… Bingo! I often work in that place, so we definitely met there.

I try to remember the dynamics and I vaguely remember how it happened, I was serving customers and among them was a Japanese man, we started talking in Japanese and he joined in the conversation, surprising everyone, he had taught English in Japan and that was where he had learned the language. …. anextraordinaryandordinarylife…
