Übergewicht bei Katzen wird oft unterschätzt. Früher galt ein rundlicher Körperbau sogar als Zeichen von Gesundheit, heute weiß man: Es handelt sich um eine eigenständige, chronische Erkrankung. Schätzungen zufolge ist inzwischen fast jede zweite Katze übergewichtig, mit spürbaren Folgen für Lebensqualität, Beweglichkeit und Lebenserwartung.
Wann ist eine Katze übergewichtig?
Das reine Gewicht in Kilogramm sagt wenig aus, da sich Katzen je nach Rasse stark unterscheiden. Deshalb wird die prozentuale Abweichung vom individuellen Idealgewicht herangezogen: Ab etwa 15 bis 20 Prozent darüber spricht man von Übergewicht, ab 30 Prozent oder mehr von Adipositas.
Schon kleine Zunahmen wirken sich deutlich aus. Bei einer Katze mit 4 Kilogramm Idealgewicht reichen bereits rund 600 Gramm zusätzlich, um in den Übergewichtsbereich zu rutschen. Eine regelmäßige Kontrolle lohnt sich also.
Wie Übergewicht entsteht
Im Kern ist es simpel: Nimmt deine Katze mehr Energie auf, als sie verbraucht, wird der Überschuss als Fett gespeichert. Mehrere Faktoren begünstigen das zusätzlich:
Katzen sind reine Fleischfresser, ihr Stoffwechsel ist nicht auf Kohlenhydrate ausgelegt. Viele Trockenfutter enthalten aber einen hohen Kohlenhydratanteil, der schnell in Fett umgewandelt wird, ein häufiger Grund für schleichende Gewichtszunahme bei Wohnungskatzen.
Auch die Fütterung im Kittenalter spielt eine Rolle: Wird zu energiereich gefüttert, bildet der Körper mehr Fettzellen, die ein Leben lang bestehen bleiben.
Nach einer Kastration sinkt der Energiebedarf, während der Appetit bei vielen Katzen steigt und die Aktivität sinkt. Ohne Anpassung der Futtermenge führt das häufig zu Übergewicht, deshalb neigen kastrierte Katzen besonders oft dazu.
Gesundheitliche Folgen
Übergewicht ist kein kosmetisches Problem. Fettgewebe setzt dauerhaft entzündungsfördernde Stoffe frei und erhöht das Risiko für mehrere Erkrankungen:
Diabetes Mellitus Typ II: Die Zellen reagieren schlechter auf Insulin, betroffene Katzen wirken träge und trinken vermehrt.

Daneben können Harnwegsprobleme, Hautprobleme (weil bestimmte Körperstellen nicht mehr erreicht werden) und ein erhöhter Blutdruck auftreten.
Body Condition Score: Der Test für zu Hause
Der Body Condition Score (BCS) ist das zuverlässigste Hilfsmittel, um den Zustand deiner Katze einzuschätzen, er bewertet die Fettverteilung statt nur das Gewicht.
So gehst du vor: Betrachte deine Katze von oben und von der Seite, taste vorsichtig Brustkorb und Wirbelsäule ab.
Im Idealgewicht: Rippen nicht sichtbar, aber bei leichtem Druck gut fühlbar, deutliche Taille von oben erkennbar.
Bei Übergewicht: Taille verschwindet, der Körper wirkt rund oder rechteckig, Rippen sind kaum noch tastbar, oft bildet sich ein hängender Bauch.
Die Skala reicht von 1 (Untergewicht) bis 9 (starkes Übergewicht), der ideale Bereich liegt bei 4 bis 5. Ab 6 beginnt Übergewicht.
Die richtige Ernährung
Achte auf eine klare Deklaration, vage Angaben wie „Fleisch und tierische Nebenerzeugnisse" solltest du meiden. Hochwertiges Nassfutter mit hohem Fleischanteil ist meist die bessere Wahl: Es hat einen hohen Feuchtigkeitsgehalt und eine niedrigere Energiedichte, deine Katze kann also größere Portionen fressen, ohne zu viele Kalorien aufzunehmen.
Trockenfutter ist dagegen sehr energiereich, hier ist besondere Vorsicht bei der Portionierung nötig. Die Herstellerangaben sind nur grobe Richtwerte, der tatsächliche Bedarf hängt von Aktivität, Alter und Kastrationsstatus ab.
Am wichtigsten: Wiege die Futtermenge genau ab, ein Dosierbecher reicht nicht. Schon kleine Abweichungen summieren sich über Wochen.
So gehst du die Gewichtsreduktion an
Ein radikaler Futterentzug ist tabu, die Abnahme muss langsam und kontrolliert erfolgen, idealerweise tierärztlich begleitet.
Steht das Futter dauerhaft bereit, verlieren viele Katzen das natürliche Sättigungsgefühl. Besser: feste Portionen zu festen Zeiten, bei Bedarf unterstützt durch einen Futterautomaten. Wiege die Tagesration mit einer Küchenwaage ab und rechne Leckerlis in diese Menge mit ein.
In Mehrkatzenhaushalten kann es knifflig werden, wenn nur eine Katze abnehmen soll. Getrennte Fütterungsplätze oder spezielle Näpfe, die nur für eine Katze zugänglich sind, helfen hier weiter.
Mehr Bewegung in den Alltag bringen
Neben weniger Futter gehört mehr Bewegung dazu. Am effektivsten sind kurze, intensive Spieleinheiten von etwa 10 bis 15 Minuten, mehrmals täglich, die das Jagdverhalten ansprechen, etwa mit einer Federangel. Wichtig: Lass deine Katze am Ende auch mal „fangen", sonst entsteht Frust.
Auch Futter lässt sich zur Beschäftigung nutzen: Futterspiele, kleine Verstecke oder einfach eine leere Papprolle regen deine Katze zum Suchen und Bewegen an. Klettermöglichkeiten, Wandregale oder ein hoher Kratzbaum erweitern zusätzlich den Bewegungsraum.
Konsequenz zahlt sich aus
Der größte Widerstand bei einer Diät ist oft nicht die Katze, sondern der Mensch selbst. Futter wird schnell mit Zuneigung verbunden, und wenn deine Katze bettelt, fällt Konsequenz schwer. Reagierst du auf Betteln stattdessen mit Spielen oder Bürsten, lernt sie: Aufmerksamkeit bedeutet nicht automatisch Futter.
Wiege deine Katze regelmäßig, zum Beispiel einmal pro Woche, das hilft dir, den Fortschritt im Blick zu behalten. Ist das Zielgewicht erreicht, passe die Futtermenge nur vorsichtig an, sonst nimmt sie schnell wieder zu.
Fazit
Vorbeugen ist deutlich einfacher als eine bestehende Adipositas zu behandeln. Mit hochwertigem Futter, genau abgewogenen Portionen, angepasster Fütterung nach der Kastration und ausreichend Bewegung hält deine Katze ihr Idealgewicht in den meisten Fällen gut. Regelmäßige Kontrolle des Körperzustands hilft dir, Veränderungen früh zu erkennen und rechtzeitig gegenzusteuern.
