Revisiting an old cross stitch project for SCIENCE!

I was entirely unprepared for April's 24 Hours of Cross Stitch weekend, but luckily had this long-hibernated project within arm's reach as an emergency backup plan.

Little did I know how educational it would end up being...

the language "All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status" is from article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Australia has ratified. I agree that if taken seriously this would be a pretty problematic principle, but lawyers in countries like Spain have presumably persuaded themselves that it doesn't mean what it plainly seems to say.

"In 2007, when I was just a girl, Texas had around 80 Planned Parenthood clinics. By 2011, about a third had closed. In 2025, only 39 remain—and none of them can provide abortion care. Even before Texas banned abortion entirely, 96% of our counties already didn’t have a provider." texasobserver.org/cuts-women-h…

There is a subset of people in the world who think it's an act of bigotry to point out the supreme hypocrisy of a nation that was established to provide refuge for a group of oppressed people who were subject to genocide, using its own military might to subject *another* oppressed group of people to genocide.

If the comparison with a well known genocidal fascist regime of the past is so upsetting, maybe you should just sit with that feeling for a bit and reconsider who and what you support.

"But it's wrong to use the fascist regime of the past who subjected members of that nation to genocide as a means of criticizing the hypocrisy of this nation subjecting another group of people to genocide."

Your sense of "wrong" defies logic, ethics, and common sense empathy for others.

This is a YOU problem.

in reply to timberwraith

And you can (and will) reflexively label this as bigotry because it's a useful thought-stopping action and an ass cover for your own support of brutality, abuse, and horror.

You don't have to think about the nature of what you support if you can just reach for that convenient response.

You're covering for the murder of others by doing this.

And that's EXACTLY why you are doing this.

THAT is the bottom line here.

Germany gets weird on it…

Qassam have never said it intentionally mimics the anti fascist red triangle that was reclaimed after WWII, but calling their use of it "revisionist" is beyond ironic

"Us? How dare you!"

It always seems to come down to some version of, "But my abuse, exploitation, and murder of others is just different. I HAVE REASONS."

Yes, I'm sure you do. But you're still acting like a nazi and you're a murderer.
