Spyro Gyra - Morning Dance
A couple of days ago, as part of my work, I had to call the South Australian police. Their on-hold music was a muzak-y version of Morning Dance. I have had the tune stuck in my head for a couple of days now as a result.
When I mentioned this to my colleagues, none of them had heard of Morning Dance, or Spyro Gyra, or really understood what late seventies jazz-funk would sound like, which is a little surprising because that tune was a massive crossover pop chart smash hit. Possibly the biggest jazz-funk hit ever.
Anyway, I've had the LP knocking round for years. It was given to me by someone at work who had caught her boyfriend cheating, had kicked him out and still had his records. She insisted I take a couple and thrust two Spyro Gyra LPs into my hands.
Well, if you really think it'll make you feel better...
The album's a more upbeat affair than I was expecting. Actually quite good in that super-smooth, polished to within an inch of its life kind of way.
I saw Spyro Gyra live at the Capital Jazz Festival in 1982. Whilst I can remember watching them, I can't remember much about them, really. There was a lot going on at those festivals.
Anyway, thanks SAPol for the inspiration. It was, honestly, the most useful thing about the whole interaction.
