My results were wildly inaccurate. But, that's also annoying in a way. And it decided for two very different photos I was "lonely" and "religious" which I'm not, in fact I'm the opposite of those things.
It also thinks I'm broke but I just think it's racist basically.
To be fair Facebook is better at serving targeted ads at me. It keeps showing me little gadgets made from titanium and early adopter gadgets of questionable utility. But, that is the kind of junk that I find tempting (last time I was there it was all skin products and makeup) So, somehow they know I like expensive little gadgets. "Better" in the sense that the products are "interesting" Still a waste of time and nothing I need.
And I like to buy gadgets from people I know best.

I think I will leave Facebook after next weekend's #monsterdon give the few people over there one more chance to jump over here and have some fun. The creepy AI images are starting to look normal to me. I don't want to stay immersed in it anymore even though I'll miss some of the people there.
I will just try texting and emailing them instead. Happily I've discovered that the people I know don't post often there. So I'm not missing much.
I recently have rediscovered the joy of handwriting letters.
I even bought a lovely fountain pen for that.
part of what made me decide to delete Facebook years ago is I realized that I wasn’t actually talking or texting with my friends as much because when we would talk it was a lot of “so this is what I’ve been up to” then “oh yeah I saw you post about that cool”.
I mean obviously with my really close friends there’s lots of laughing and gossiping and deeper discussions about whatever would have been on Facebook, but there’s no point in reaching out to tell someone something if they saw it on Facebook already, so there was less real contact with my friends, which was sad.
The only hard part was that I had to put people’s birthday in my actual calendar again and remember to pay attention to that because I don’t have Facebook reminding me anymore.

I have noticed it is laughably bad at deciding location. Only picture it got location right is one I took of stalled traffic with the Arch literally in background.
It kept calling me agnostic, which I am, and I don’t know how it determined that.
In my case, it recommended targeting me with gender-affirming products and services.
When biologists say an animal is "basal" does this mean:
* the animal has more traits found in extinct animals than its close relations
* the animal is taxonomically isolated on a branch with few leaves
* because the animal is taxonomically isolated, it may have traits of extinct ancestors of a clade lost in most other clade members
I've seen it used in all of these ways. Is the isolation key? Or is it being similar to the ancestor that matters more?
myrmepropagandist reshared this.
1/2 I'm not a biologist, but
when I hear "basal", I imagine a family tree of the group including the basal group, and imagine the "basal" to branch off near the base of the group in which it is contained.
so, for example, if someone says "Eodromaeus was a basal theropod" I imagine a tree something like this:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theropod…
and you can see in that tree Eodromaeus branches off near the base. Pigeons, on the other hand, are a highly derived group of theropods.

From the time I was seven years old, I have wanted to be a scientist. The wonders of the universe, the delights of biodiversity, the cryptic secrets of number theory — I fell in love with these worlds and marveled that there was a role in our society for people who worked to uncover and share them.
Science, I realized, gave us superpowers. We evolved sensory capabilities consistent with our physical scale and temporal experience. But with science, we can understand what happened in the femtoseconds after the Big Bang, the molecular basis of inheritance, time dilation at the edge of a black hole, a 4 billion-year story of life on earth.

When I was in graduate school, nothing in the world felt more important to me than publishing a paper in the scientific literature. It was not about getting a job or competing with my peers. It was about being part of something vastly larger than myself and profoundly meaningful human history.
I still remember the feeling of peace I felt when I made it happen. Even if I never achieved my dreams of being a research scientist, I had been able to contribute, in however tiny a way, to a community stretching over countless generations and striving toward a common and profoundly meaningful aim.
Thinking back on all this I better understand the pain I feel to see science under devastating attack here. It’s not just about my livelihood or my university. It’s about my identity. And it’s about a pursuit that I see as standing along with art, literature, and music as among our highest callings.

I think Clarke got it wrong and was being far too pessimistic.
There is no magic; just science we don't know about yet. Even if we're confronted with something totally unexplained in present terms, the idea that it will *eventually* be explainable is an important difference in attitude.

If that's all he meant then he phrased it quite badly and it's certainly *not* the way most people have interpreted this quote over the years.
Remember, this is coming from the author of _Rendezvous With Rama_, _2001_, and _Childhood's End_, ... stories where god-like intelligence appears out of the blue and produces completely incomprehensible artifacts to which the only proper response is "give up now, you will never understand this in a million years,"
It's a sufficiently consistent theme throughout his work that when he says "magic", I'm pretty sure he *did* mean it in the sense of casting spells + invoking the gods + praying they're in a good mood.
I recognise this feeling, it's like breathing.
Breathe in - read the papers, learn from them;
Breathe out - write one, contribute to the collective oeuvre;
And then someone else will read your paper, for *their* contribution.
The feeling of connection to other scientists, on a timeline that stretches out in both directions, is so powerful.
I personally had similar thoughts few years ago:
1. When I noticed “Defund STEM” protests (following the “Defund Polis” protests) - tolerated and even encourage by Biden’s administration
2. When I noticed that in my classes at the university there are significantly more STEM students from the Global South and almost none from Europe.
3. When the number of admin staff exceeded the number of researchers (in places like MIT, Heidelberg, Cambridge, …)

Unthrifty loveliness, why dost thou spend
Upon thy self thy beauty's legacy?
Nature's bequest gives nothing, but doth lend,
And being frank she lends to those are free:
Then, beauteous niggard, why dost thou abuse
The bounteous largess given thee to give?
Profitless usurer, why dost thou use
So great a sum of sums, yet canst not live?
For having traffic with thy self alone,
Thou of thy self thy sweet self dost deceive:
Then how when nature calls thee to be gone,
What acceptable audit canst thou leave?
Thy unused beauty must be tombed with thee,
Which, used, lives th' executor to be.

I've started posting on LinkedIn all the unconstitutional shit Trump and Musk are doing to undermine the security and integrity of our government. Mainly because that crowd needs to hear it most. It's incredible how many people in the infosec space are still defending the actions of DOGE and its dear leader(s). And they're not all crypto bros and AI peddlers; we're talking about people in some pretty important roles, tech-wise.
But at least when they reply with the inevitable "stay in your lane" or "I used to like you when you stayed out of politics," they are on record as complicit and totally okay with what is going on.

Because solidarity didn't work.
At least in theory, there was the consensus after WW2 that a strong state that sets guidelines for the greater good was desirable. That meant taxes, regulation, large public sector (including military) and at least the promise of a better life.
That dream and the consensus were slowly eroded by rich people until we're now in a situation of collapse. Suddenly egoism is en vogue again.

@briankrebs so reporting on the simple fact that the InfoSec experts at the US Treasury have deemed DOGE an insider threat is “hyperbole” coming out of Wired, not hyperbole coming from the US Treasury InfoSec, or so says a Trump fanboy who manages InfoSec at the Capital One corporation.
We truly live in a “post-fact” nation: all facts are “opinions,” the opinions with the most money behind them are “The Truth.” Evidence has nothing to do with it.
It started by disregarding basic science on evolutionary theory, then disregarding science on the environment and pollution, then disregarding science about modern medicine of vaccines, then diregarding the phenomenon of transgender people, then regarding even basic germ theory during COVID-19.
Now they have leveled-up to disregarding technical expertise on basic information security.

The essence of LinkedIn is being an advertisement platform for the tech complex and it moves more and more from connecting ideas to advertisement. Quite tell tale for the current state of the tech industry
it's kind of the social network for the office. So like you're not supposed to be controversial at work, you're supposed to stick to safe subjects on LinkedIn - that seems like the tacit agreement that people on LinkedIn buy into. Kind of like Severance where your office life and your outside life are supposed to be completely separate.
Lately though, I've started posting things that are critical of the Musk regime because we can't just act like things are normal.
It depends what you mean by "controversial"
The most promoted are just disgustingly controversial... just in their own way
LinkedIn is just a platform for shameless self promotion, there is no value or information to be gained from it.
I'm only there so recruiters can find me.
So, it‘s not infosec when it’s ‚political‘.
But it‘s not ‚political‘ when it‘s about government contracts. That‘s business!
Except when it‘s about a contract between the people and their government, that is definitely ‚political‘.
As they say: „When everyone cares only about themselves, everyone is cared for!“
you need to be pretty far down a rabbit hole to think ANY remediation project is best performed by expert novices without any planning oversight or coordination.
Frankly this is disqualifying from any form of leadership, but we’ve been recruiting those badly for decades now so I suppose this isn’t surprising.

There are lots of security contracts within the member states that involve US companies, including in my country, which is already operating US-made Humvee vehicles. In addition to that we've completely switched from the old Soviet MiG 21 LanceR planes which were falling out of the sky like crazy to the F16, right after the invasion of Russia in Ukraine, which we're using as a transition aircraft to F35, which we're planning to get 1st hand from Lockheed Martin by 2030-2035. In addition, we're also buying Abrams tanks, and we're looking for replacement IFVs - which are also likely to be acquired from US companies. We're also using C30 Hercules planes for transport as well as other stuff
These things aren't simple set it and forget it things. They require maintenance, spare parts and all sorts of things that come from the manufacturer. Having the US on the other side would make it a tremendous challenge, just like in any similar case. When we decided to join NATO back in the early 2000s, we had quite an important fleet of MiG 29 aircraft. But we depended on Russia for all those things. Well, Russia decided to just cut out the support for it. We tried a modernization project into MiG 29 Sniper, just like we did with the MiG 21s, but it failed miserably.
What can we replace the F35s with? Pretty much nothing. The only other countries manufacturing 5th gen fighter jets are Russia (which is not even reliable, not only because of sanctions, but because of the particularly low production volume of the said planes) and China - both of which are countries to avoid by any sane democracy.
edit: And not to mention the huge, abysmaly huge, enormous nuclear stockpile that the US has. It's the 2nd in the world, with the US also being one of the few countries having a nuclear triad - with nuclear weapons both on submarines, airplanes and on ICBMs. Should the US ever be attacked with nukes, there's a huge possibility of response. And for every country that is allied to the US, having that on your side in case of a conflict is a huge thing.
Both France and the UK also have a nuclear stockpile of their own, but it's much much lower than that of the US, and if, through absurd circumstances, we would have the US allied with Russia or China, the remaining block would stand no chance in a conflict.
So, whoever pulled the Trump in power did a huge blow to the entire free world!

The United States used to be a world leader, a beacon of light, in Democracy, Science, Technology. That has all been dismantled in favor of uneducated zealots who are obsessed with transgender people, abortions and "DEI".

Well I'm sure they have a serious concern about the dangers of "fluorosis" -- the slight discoloration of your teeth that can be caused by fluoride.

"Ya see here, Joe Biden doesn't want yous to know that an'arctica is just an ice wall, because that's where him and Oh-bama have been hidin' the giant nephilim army they've been amassin'."

"The fluoride keeps people from being able to afford to go theres 'cause they can't go to college."
I have an acquaintance in my social circles who *smokes* and who also goes to a health food store every week to fill up some huge bottles with "reverse osmosis water".
She does fully acknowledge that on a rational level it makes no sense. She also has a tougher time finding dates because she smokes.
I think for maybe quitting smoking is very hard and she isn't up for it.

Sonnet 020 - XX
A woman's face with nature's own hand painted,
Hast thou, the master mistress of my passion;
A woman's gentle heart, but not acquainted
With shifting change, as is false women's fashion:
An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth;
A man in hue all hues in his controlling,
Which steals men's eyes and women's souls amazeth.
And for a woman wert thou first created;
Till Nature, as she wrought thee, fell a-doting,
And by addition me of thee defeated,
By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.
But since she prick'd thee out for women's pleasure,
Mine be thy love and thy love's use their treasure.

An exquisite depiction of nature’s rhythm and energy, the Jar (Hu) at #ClevelandMuseumofArt embodies ancient craftsmanship with its swirling patterns and symbolic dragon. How do you interpret the movement and symbolism within this earthenware masterpiece?
