"I think one of the most important parts about mutual aid has to do with changing the social relationships that we have among each other, in order to be able to fight beyond this current moment, beyond the current crisis, beyond the current form of a disaster that we're trying to overcome. And so, one of the beautiful aspects is that you really don't know where the connections are going to take you. You're going to make and build new relationships that will lead to new projects and will lead to new understandings, that will shape the potential future of your community and beyond." - Mariame Kaba

Sharing Power

“In general, power-over oversteps the responsibility each person has to themselves or their collective; someone decides about something that is not theirs to decide.

The flip side of this also exists: if an individual (or a collective) doesn’t step into their individual power and defers to the others, it’s power-under. Thats when someone doesn’t use their power or believes/pretends that they don’t have any power. That’s when people complain instead of acting, when they cave in or sacrifice themselves."

Let's strive to have neither power-over or power-under in our communities. We all have the be on the lookout for it.

No mutual aid groups in your town? Want to start one? Maybe I can help!

In these times, let #BIPOC, #LGBTQIA, #poor, #homeless, and other oppressed and marginalized community members in your town or region know they are not alone, and let us all organize our safety and caring together. Social media posts alone won't do it. We have to find each other.
