in reply to 404 Media

This is one of the critical problems with permitting a third party (e.g. Hoopla or Overdrive) to control the digital systems that enable access to books. An important tenet in librarianship, archives, etc. is intellectual control of the holdings. When third parties acting on problematic copyright and other legislation strip libraries of their duty for intellectual control, we see exactly this kind of thing result.

Horrifying and sad...
There needs to be some solis education about this sort of thing, and if your library uses "Hoopla" like this, maybe tell the library, show them what racistband AI slop books are on there, and beware of cheap paperback too..... Don't just accept it if you are interested in hearing real human perspectives.

After “How do we stop Trump?” the second most common question I’ve received this week is “How do we stop Musk?”

Musk's access to our private data is blatant corruption. It is a coup. And while we continue to wait for Democratic leadership to act—what can we as ordinary citizens and residents of this nation do? Enter the Privacy Act of 1974 and a clear call to action each person can and should take.

As always, no paywall. Please read, act, and share.

Journalists: Trump tariffs are tax hikes on Americans. Please do your damned jobs and report that.

Only One Thing really matters to Trump
Tax Cuts for his donors
Then a reduction or destruction of social programs meant to benefit the Middle Class & Poor
He will scoop up some cash from Tariffs temporarily
Then lower the boom and pass tax relief for the rich
This will crush the economy, cause CHAOS, and then Marshall Law

If the reports are correct, Trump has ordered 32,000 acre-ft (~10 billion gals) of #water released from these reservoirs. That water will, mostly, be lost. Some will evaporate, some will seep into groundwater. Farmers who had rights to that water in the reservoir are now unlikely to have physical or legal access to it. Anticipate legal chaos over water allocations in the summer. #cawater

Yes, exactly. There was a UN sponsored study about 20 years ago of private versus public health systems in Africa, where the mix made it easier to compare with fewer variables.

The public systems were cheaper to operate and had better outcomes.

@arrrg TBH what we need in Britain is market intervention to make electricity (much of which is already from renewable sources) cheaper with respect to gas or at least in line with elsewhere in Europe, on top of investment in training for general electricians and heat pump installers (so those who can't immediately have a heat pump could at least switch from gas to electric heating)
