"[The American-owned] Postmedia owns over a hundred Canadian newspapers and most of our major dailies – from the National Post to the Edmonton Journal to the Pembroke Observer and News. Their channels are the primary source of news for millions of Canadians. If Postmedia needed to choose between what’s good for its American owners and what’s good for Canada, what would they choose?" coreyhogan.ca/p/nationalize-po… #cdnpoli #Postmedia

Wrong question:

What are they choosing daily? Obviously, the interests of their owners, which usually align more with the interests of the USA than Canada.

in reply to TheGentYYC

haven’t they already shut down most newspaper operations so they can sell the land their buildings sit on? The Vancouver Sun, at least, has had no newsroom for a year and employs about five journalists. No news seems to be reported. Local news around here is down to the Tyee. Fortunately the Tyee is excellent.

Wikipedia Prepares for 'Increase in Threats' to US Editors From Musk and His Allies

The Wikimedia Foundation says it will likely roll out features previously used to protect editors in authoritarian countries more widely.

I've done a few Wikipedia edits and additions in the past. It's our universal encyclopedia, not perfect but a global knowledge resource nonetheless for everyone.

apologies for an editorial nitpick, but removing the word "previously" from that text seems more accurate

BOOKFACE BIG UPDATE!

ANDREQ 🇷🇺 doesn't like this.

in reply to Pygoscelis Papua

The goal of the mobile application is largely determined by the fact that every time you do not redraw the already heavy interface of Friendica... We are invited to use it through the browser as well.... pwa, are you seriously happy about such perversions of the interface like fB? I stop understanding people🤔

don't like this

in reply to Pygoscelis Papua

Thanks for the effort. It works as advertised in my Firefox browser. I think it definitely could help FB users to migrate to Friendica.

Hello and Welcome to Friendica!

!Vegans of Nanaimo

I'm seeing lots of potential with the platform as it grows on me more. I hope more folks will realize the value and decide to switch over.

Thank you contributors of Friendica and instance maintainers for delivering such a great friendly experience!

@Sunshine add Hubzilla and Streams to the mix for more bruises and blood.

Edit: my God, I just remembered! my comment contains the word "blood" in it, can you imagine? 😱😱 That means I would have been banned on it by the automod on Facebook for gore and violence. All while not caring about actual violence and gore reported by the users themselves.

in reply to Cătă

And your comment got an "Filtered word: gore [reveal/hide]" toggle, because I added that filter myself! 😅
(I should add "violence" to it, as well.)

So ... the filter works fine for text, and I just had to click the toggle to reveal its content, but what are the chances of people sharing pictures actually tagging their posts correctly? 🤔
(It says "filtered word", but does it auto-tag pictures as well? ... aaand I don't really want to "try" that one out.)

How do you filter all global posts to Friendica instances only?

I would like to see an unique source of content as I check Mastodon separately. I do like the comments under posts from the other platforms though.
in reply to Sunshine

@Sunshine Not sure if it's possible, at least not without an app. That's how the Fediverse works - you get access to every connected network, be it Mastodon, PeerTube, Lemmy, Pixelfed (yes, I saw those too) etc.

In fact, you might have stumbled across posts from other networks on Mastodon too - you only didn't notice because Mastodon and other networks do not display where these actually come from.

in reply to Sunshine

I'm able to toggle my 👍👎, but they're a bit slow
... like "<press>, ..., ..., 'oh, you want me to toggle that, don't you?', ..., 'ok, then'".

Seeing these great fediverse platforms makes want to post more

As these open-source platforms are so well made!

If I want to convince more people I know to be here, I will have to make more content.

in reply to Sunshine

I'm still struggling to get the hang of it all or to find relevant content to me -- I also need to learn the art of macroblogging to create content of my own... seems we both have work to do!

Trying out the alternatives takes time to figure out. At first I jumped out of linux like it was cold water until I realized the value.

You will be missed if Friendica does not work for you.

Welcome Former Facebook Users

Make yourself at home! Friendica has been in development for around 15 years and has a ton of features that you can master!
in reply to Sunshine

Thank you for welcoming me. I am just checking out what Friendica is and seeing if it is and how it works. I support of a small opensource convention and we are exploring using Friendica to replace out Facebook presence.
in reply to Newsteinleo

@newsteinleo @sunshine Have also a look at hubzilla which has additional features, eg cloud storage/webdav
in reply to Sunshine

I have not looked at hubzilla yet, thank you for mentioning it. I have been aware of the Fediverse for a few year, but I am only just now really starting to dig into everything that is here. Our big needs are a space were or community can interact with each and where they can get updates on events and news.
