Would you help a poor single-user Friendica server admin out and boost this post?
Boosting will increase the number of servers my server federates with.
Thanks!
EDIT: that is probably not exactly how it works, but it kinda depends on which of the myriad of ActivityPub servers is seeing the boost, and I haven't checked all of them on how they decide what to pull in. For sure, having someone follow an account on the friendica server will have that friendica server push updates to the server of the follower, but other than that? Who knows 😀
Thanks for the overwhelming amount of boosts anyway, and thanks to those following 😀

Friendica and calendar
Hi everyone,
I’m playing a bit with the platform and I’m creating events, the only problem I see is that they are private so I’m not able to share them in other platforms (like mastodon - am I saying a stupid thing?). I’m doing g something wrong? There is a way to share them/ a post on the other platforms?

Groepen
"To create a group like Facebook, you have to make an entirely new account on Friendica, then switch it to a Group account in the settings. You can use the same email address as your personal account".
"In Friendica, you can create sub-accounts under your main account. These can function as groups. By giving your sub-account a clear name, everyone will immediately know what the discussions are about.
SWITCHING BETWEEN ACCOUNTS
If you have one or more sub-accounts, you can easily switch between your main and sub-account:
Click on your avatar in the top right corner.
Select ‘Accounts’ and choose the desired account.
CREATING A SUB-ACCOUNT
Click on your avatar in the top right corner.
Go to ‘Settings’.
In the left menu, click ‘Manage Accounts’.
Click the hyperlink ‘Register an additional account’.
Enter the following details:
- Display Name: a name for the group (for instance: Make Love, Not War).
- Nickname: a unique username (for instance: Lennon@friendica.world).
- Password: enter the password of your main account (no new password required).
- Do you want your main account to also participate in the group? Then choose
‘yes’ under ‘Include your profile in member directory’.
SETTING UP THE SUB-ACCOUNT AS A GROUP
Log in to your new sub-account.
Click on your avatar in the top right corner and go to ‘Settings’.
Click ‘Account’ in the left menu.
Click ‘Advanced account types’.
Choose ‘Community Group’, then ‘Public Group - Restricted (Contact requests have to be manually approved)’. People cannot join the group automatically. When someone requests to join, you will receive a notification with an access request, which you can approve or deny.
ADDITIONAL OPTIONS
There are many more things you can add and settings you can set. Besides setting up a group, you can also configure your sub-account as a regular account or explore other options."

What would you do?
What if you're a tourist in such a resort and notice the owner has a subscription to Starlink? Would you decide not to return ever again because of that or would you be thankful for the guaranteed internet connection?

As a guest, you can ask the owner why he has the subscription, enlighten him in case he's ignorant, and blame him for being immoral.
I can't smile at people in the streets with big Primark bags because I know full well they are arseholes. Seeing them makes me sad and grumpy. Likewise, spending a whole holiday in the vicinity of an arsehole is not my cup of tea. You won't find me helping to sustain one, unless maybe there is no other way to stay in a unique place where I feel I need to be. Although... come to think of it, an owner with a monopoly doesn't need Starlink to compete and must therefore be the kind of utter jerk I really can't stand.
I might not mind a lift in a very old Tesla, one that was bought before Elon M. put his arseholeship on full display, but I don't want to be in a car with the kind of arsehole that sponsored him aware of his true colours.
All in all, I must admit we live in a difficult time to read a moral compass.
It’s true. I’m retiring @fediversenews, and have created @fediversenews as its successor.
I used to post constantly to that #Friendica group. However, I am incredibly pleased with the moderation toolkit of #Piefed, so it only makes sense to use that software instead.
For those who don’t know, Piefed is a #Reddit-like platform – similar to #Lemmy and #Mbin – but I feel it has amongst the best community management tools of the federated Reddit-like platforms. So I am thrilled to be migrating an old community over to Piefed.
Oh yeah, and I’m looking for moderators. So if this interests you, let me know.
RE: piefed.social/post/488665
Welcome!
This community is the next iteration of @[url=https://venera.social/profile/fediversenews]Fediverse News[/url], which is currently a Friendica group that will be retired in a month.@[url=https://venera.social/profile/fediversenews]Fediverse News[/url] is quite popular, and currently has 2.6K followers. However, I stopped sharing news on venera.social as I discovered that moderation there was quite difficult. Having tested #Piefed for the past month, I am thrilled to see that it has a more advanced moderation toolkit -- so this will be replacing the old community.
A big welcome to everyone who is current or past member of @[url=https://venera.social/profile/fediversenews]Fediverse News[/url].

RIP fediversenews! 🪦 Long live fediversenews! 👑
Interestingly, without the "!" it doesn't show up as a group in Friendica. It's a user that doesn't exist so there's no way to follow it from the tag. You have to click through then drop the url in search.
What do you find to be the biggest improvements in mod tools at piefed over lemmy?
The biggest problem with Friendica groups is that when someone replies to a group post, the group actor boosts all replies to people's timelines -- which proves problematic for people running microblogging software like Mastodon. This also makes popular Friendica groups highly attractive to spammers and trolls because they can say whatever in comments, and now 2.6K people are receiving those messages in their home feeds. It is also very difficult to remove comments and ban people in a Friendica group.
What I like about Piefed is that you can delete and edit anything in a community, ban people easily or unban them, review reports, mark reports as resolved / ignored. And most important, all those tools are easily accessible.

Toto at the Mitsubishi Electric Hall in Düsseldorf (Feb 19, 2025)
I arrived at the hall about 45 minutes before doors opened officially, to a medium long queue. They did start to let us in early, though, because everybody was searched, which takes time. Everything was strictly on time, lights went out for special guest Christopher Cross at 7:30 pm. He played a set of 45 minutes that I will not comment on except to say that it was immensely boring for me, because it's not my kind of music at all.
An army of roadies changed the set then and at one minute to 9 o'clock Toto went on stage. It was such a contrast to Christopher Cross, so much energy! Even though only Steve Lukather is left of the original line-up, at least two of the musicians these days have played with the band for a long time, namely Joseph Williams (who was singer on "Fahrenheit" and "The Seventh One" and returned as lead vocalist in 2014) and Greg Phillinganes who plays keyboard and sings backing vocals and has on and off played with them for decades. Most of the other musicians have been long-term friends apart from Dennis Atlas, whom they aptly named a powerhouse, the second keyboarder and singer. He sings the very high parts that the young Bobby Kimball was so perfect at. In the keyboard solo parts Greg played a more jazzy piece, whereas Dennis is more the rock kind of guy (and could it be he knows his Bach and Beethoven?), experimenting with all the different sounds the keyboard has to offer.
Shannon Forrest on drums got to play a solo, too and last but not least John Pierce provided a solid backdrop with his bass playing.
Toto played only songs from the classic albums until "Mindfield", they performed the title track which hasn't been on their setlist since the Mindfield tour. Luke sang more than he usually does and with Greg, Dennis, and Warren Ham also on vocals, Joseph didn't perform too many songs on his own, which I thought was a shame. His performance on "White Sister" was stunning, though. Actually, there wasn't a single song that I did not like, the band always seems to have fun on stage and absolutely transmits that to the audience. They played for almost exactly two hours, closing with "Hold the Line" and "Africa" and then it was over without an encore. That was a bit sudden! The lights went on at once and the crew began to dismantle the stage.
It was a totally different experience from the countless Marillion concerts that I have been to, or recently, Riverside, where the music includes quite a bit of soul-searching and also sharing the musicians' emotion and personal experiences with the audience. A lot of Toto music is more about combining rock, pop, jazz and progrock to make stunning, complicated and at the same time accessible music and sharing that with the audience. Still, there are certainly songs that mean a lot to members of the band like "I will remember" for Steve Lukather. What all these musicians have in common though is that music is the focus, in contrast to a choreographed show like Madonna's or Beyonce's stage performances. Those seems to me more like a circus performance with the music added on top rather than a celebration of music itself. This is not criticism on my part, rather an observation. If people enjoy it - perfect! For my part, I want to concentrate on the music, though I sure enjoy a front man (or woman, or lots of them at a Toto concert) who can entertain and talk to the crowd. Loved it! So, if you like Toto, absolute go to a concert if you can, you'll be in for two hours that pass in a flash, you'll have fun and feel the energy between the band and the audience.

Thank you for the link, for two reasons:
1) People are jumping on Proton's CEO without CITATIONS for why they say so
2) This analysis is reassuring, and seems much more plausible than the hysterical assertions that Proton's CEO is a Trump supporter.
Really fascinating and informative work there. Thank you for sharing it here.
Having read the post, though not every detail of the linked in articles I am rethinking my opinion on Proton. I do wish Yen had not made the pronouncement, or at least had done it differently, perhaps with out the typically pejorative term "Dems" but, as I read through the Medium post I had a bit of déjà vu from a time when an exec in my company chose some words poorly and almost everything we did to put out the fire only seemed to fan the flames.
@regendans @AlbertBorneo It really irritates me how this is framed as "surprising". What would be completely surprising is if there was any substance behind the claim in the first place. I refuse to shift the burden of proof.
Another issue I have is that apparently everything normal has to be called liberal. FFS stop being so damned US centric!

When using this site, make sure service actually uses EU cloud/hosting.
Some of the services there openly use AWS/GCP or a bit more stealthly host their operations (like email/support) with US vendors.
Unfortunately, one has to check to be sure.

I use Nextcloud. It’s free and open source. You can run it on your own server at home, but I pay a small fee for a provider in the UK (around 4 euros per month, though there’s an even cheaper plan). The provider ensures everything stays up to date. Plus, you can choose where your server is located (for me: in Europe), and it runs on 100% green energy. I’m very, very impressed with this Google Docs alternative and highly recommend it.

Troubleshooting
I've been troubleshooting the issues we keep having with Friendica.world.
The site gets unresponsive at nights (CET) around 3AM, and stays that way for a couple of hours. I've been trying to find the reason for that, but no luck yet.
It's not the backup (that runs at a different time), nor are the resources at 100%.
I did just change a setting for pm.max_children
which defines the number of php-fpm
processes which handle the web traffic, because I saw some errors about it having reached the max. This will fix some issues, but not sure if it fixes the freezing of the site.. We'll see I guess..

If there are people with some technical skills, wanting to help out running this thing (or any other instance we run), please send me a DM or mail info@friendica.world.
It's all volunteer work, and we can use some extra hands.

So are you saying Friendica simply wasn’t written to anticipate this many users on one server, or is this a horizontal scaling problem? I mean, so far a I understand, PHP scales more horizontally than vertically, and you recently threw more resources at it when you moved to the new server, but is Friendica even written to scale horizontally? I seem to recall running across a GitHub issue raised about it not being able to do that because it does everything by hostname or something.
Every night around 8PM my time (~3AM your time) I start getting a “504 Gateway Timeout” and that pretty much persists the rest of my evening I can’t access the site. The status on Fedihosting Foundation never seems to show it’s down during this lengthy period of inaccessibility and will show only previous outages of like “4 minutes” that were resolved. So I’m never sure if it’s just me or on my end or what? Sometimes I’ll still be getting new follow or comment emails from Friendica.world in the midst of my not being able to access the site. So I guess it’s not down for everyone else? If it a traffic spike? The server firewall rules? DNS config? Is there no CDN?
It certainly seems strange if the server resources aren’t maxed out but something is mysteriously happening every night around the same time that persists in making it inaccessible for hours.😵💫

For the record, I installed YunoHost on my VPS on December 17th, so it’s been less than 2 months. And I’ve already run (and survived) app updates.
Next week I get to meet the team in Paris - thrilled at the opportunity to thank them IRL 🤗

FWIW YunoHost doesn't exactly make this a straightforward process, but I remember hearing that the app for the streams repository is upgradeable in place. You don't have to wait for a YunoHost update for each release - which is the case for many fediverse platforms.
Since we don't have a "mothership" instance and very few public instances (most sites are privately run for close friends and family), this is an excellent way of taking streams for a test drive.
ha ha, I've gone through the same journey as well:) I shout it from the rooftops every chance I get.
#Yunohost is a gift to the world, it's so empowering to be able to host your own services!

Thanks! Normally i do everything server-related by Hand (shell).
But i am very impressed by #Yunohost - Makes it so much easier, faster and i think less error prone.
Sometimes a bit of Handwork is still needed, but up until now, that was only very small Things that where documented quite well. Aand the Yunohost CLI Tools are also quite comfy!

@IvarGierveld Mozilla Thunderbird - lokaal mailprogramma.
Thunderbird — Bevrijd uw Postvak IN
Security updates daargelaten.
@bassjobsen

@FransVeldman
@sandradejong Bezint eer ge begint.
@sindarina
@sandradejong
wiki.thefloatinglab.world/shel…

Gratis.
Even goede vrienden verder hoor.

Signal is a corporation (yes, it doesn't store your data or messages, so it's kind of safe)
Matrix is a protocol, no one controls it; Like Activity Pub, people can build applications over it, just like

It's not just "kind of safe." It's a legitimate means of safe and private communication owned by a non-profit.
Open source code, vetted by the security industry.
You don't have to do hardly any digging to verify all its accolades.
Give their CEO, @Mer__edith , a follow if you're so inclined.
While Signal is very promising, and currently very secure, it is not federated services which leaves it vulnerable in case the business model changes, like if the intellectual property of the clients and/or servers would become subject to capitalisation. If so, it would be far from the first time that this happens in the history.

@mwguy I’ve been pushing the fediverse for a while now, but the big 2’s fascist overtures lately have finally radicalized my wife to consider it. She happily joined #pixelfed and has convinced several friends to join.
I think that’s the key. If you/she can get a group to join together, and then they can convince someone else to do so, it will become a more attractive option. It’s the chicken & egg scenario right now.
@Chris Geoghooligan @mwguy There are already a few mobile apps especially for Friendica: #Raccoon and #Relatica . But I have no experience with them, the best is always the web app because it has all the functions. However, I wouldn't really recommend Friendica to people who only want to use it on their smartphone.
It is not fair to put Mastodon, Pixelfed, Friedica, Peertube and Loops as analogous to Signal. Signal is centralized, Signal relies on closed source libraries, Signal is only distributed through PlayStore, Signal is not a federated platform.
If we want to have a messaging platform on that image, it should be XMPP.

Make sure you properly select these permissions, because you cannot change them later. If you format your post (see below), you can also check the preview pane to see how your post will look. This also applies for comments.
How to format my text?
Unlike Facebook, Friendica allows you to format your text, just like you'd do in a Word document. It uses BBCodes for text formatting like bold text, italic text, underlined text and many others. You can find more example on the usage of it in the Wiki or under
https://your-instance-address/help/bbcode
. You don't have to style your text, but you can do some nice stuff with it. You can also get suggestions for formatting by typing[
and selecting an option from the drop-down menu, or typing out your option to narrow your search. But do check the wiki, though. Generally, BBCode looks like[option]your-text-here[/option]
.If there is any text where you don't want to add any tags on by accident, slide it between these tags:
[noparse][/noparse]
.How to upload an image (and how to add alt-text to it)
Just drag&drop it into the composing page. Simple. Easy. No frills. Also, to note is that you can also re-use an image you previously uploaded if you go to the Browser tab in the compose window.
Finally, you can link to any image you find online, without downloading&reuploading it in the 1st place. Right-click an image, click "copy image link", then go to your post and type
[img]paste-your image-link-here[/img]
(of course, you paste your image link instead, between theimg
tags). This is generally how images are displayed via BBCode.I personally use an external site to host my media and link it this way, whenever there is something I want on the internet for as long as possible in order to save some space on my instance. I mostly use postimages.org, but I also used
Meta and now also Reddit like to change the URL string to the media posted on their platforms, so don't rely on these if you want your post to still stay relevant after a few days.
You can also add Alt-Text to your image if, instead, you type
[img=your_image_url]Your Alt-Text here[/img]
. Alt-Text is generally an image description that is displayed when the image fails to load/before loading, and is useful to visually impaired people using screen reading software which can read this out loud. The latter is the reason why it is highly recommended by many people all across the Fediverse (not just on Friendica). How to upload a video or other media
Just like you do with an image. However, the video will be posted under Browser, and then the "Files" icon:
Select your file, and it will be posted with an tag.
However, there's currently no user facing way to delete these as yet, so feel free to upload them on any other external service and share the direct link to the audio/video if you care about this.
You can use the tags
[audio]your-link-to-the-audio[/audio]
and[video]your-link-to-the-video[/video]
for that.How do I make a poll/vote at polls
Polls are currently supported by a few Fediverse platforms, but not by Friendica fully, right now (you can see them, but you cannot vote on them and create them). You can again use an external service for creating polls, such as poll-maker or Strawpoll.
Okay, but do I need to add a title?
No, you don't. I didn't add one either here. You can if you want your post to be more fancy and want to turn your profile into a more of a personal blog. Which would be cool, but it's not necessary. You do you!
How to post to a group
Groups on Friendica, as well as any other ActivityPub platform, are generally just some special accounts that automatically boost/reshare whatever post you added while tagging them. Therefore, just create a regular post and tag them with the
!
or@
signs (one of these tags should suffice). The former one creates a post that is visible on the group but unlisted wherever else (i.e. in a public feed). The latter takes account of your permission settings. You will see how you can find groups somewhere below. How to find various people
There are multiple ways; One is to use any of the established lists:
- Fedi.db's list
- Most followed Mastodon accounts by Stefan Hayden
- Fliboard federated accounts (for news organizations on Flipboard who enabled AP integration) [Google Sheet spreadsheet]
- [Public] Popular/famous/notable Mastodon accounts (also available as a website) [Google Sheet spreadsheet]
- The Friendica directory (only for people on Friendica)
- Follow @FediFollows for suggestion
You can also go to Settings>Profile>Miscellaneous and scroll all the way down to add some tags to the profile. Then, you can also go to Contacts and choose "similar interests" in the left pane, get friend suggestions or a random profile.
Finally, you can also follow hashtags to get posts from people that also share your interests directly in your feed, and then follow them from there.
I'm posting stuff here, but how can people discover me?
Just like on Mastodon, you can enhance your posts with #hashtags. Other people who follow the same hashtags can find you and connect with you if they want.
But that's not the only way. You can also add yourself into the aforementioned Friendica Directory or to your server's one by going to Settings>Account>Security and Privacy Settings and check any of these two options:
This way anyone can find you according to your interests.
If, however you would like more privacy, you can check the following box below:
This limits the visibility of your content to only instances that are made aware of it, and people that have access to it based on your privacy settings. Unlogged users will not be allowed to find your content. E.g., open my profile in a new tab to see how this feature works: libranet.de/profile/petrescatr…
How do I find groups?
Same as with regular people. There are multiple lists:
- Friendica Directory (for groups that are on Friendica).
- Check the list of @Fedi.Tips available here.
- Lemmyverse (For Communities on Lemmy - a decentralized Lemmy alternative - be wary of this though)
- Check out the servers of other Fediverse software like Mbin or Piefed. These are more forum-like platforms, centered around communities. Generally, each of these communities has a Fediverse address. Copy that, paste it in the search bar, and you should be able to find it. If it doesn't work the 1st time, try a few more times. If it still doesn't work, look whether the server is not on the banned list by accessing
your-server-address/friendica
, and/or contact your admin for clarification. How do I use the search? Is it any useful beyond just searching for people and groups and other accounts?
Yes. Check the Wiki for more information.
Are there any mobile apps?
Yes there are. From my personal experience, Raccoon for Friendica gave me the best results. Relatica is also a great option, as well as Fedilab (the latter is more of a Mastodon client, but you can disable the display of reply in the feeds and enable BBCode - fiddle out in the settings). There are other apps for various platforms as well. If you don't find any of them fitting, you can just access your Friendica server in your browser (e.g. friendica.world, nerdica.net etc.). It's very responsive and easy to use.
I hope this Q&A covers the most common aspects of using Friendica

Bonus: Text colorsOne aspect that hasn't really been touched on in the wiki is the colors. You can have text in any color if you type the text like this[color=color_name_or_value]your text here[/color]
. Hex values are accepted, however there are also some human readable names that can be used (based on this thread):

♲ @FediTips@social.growyourown.services:Years ago I used to recommend a Fedi platform called Lemmy. However, in 2021 some very disturbing stuff about Lemmy's developers came out which totally changed my mind. Because of this, I did a thread to warn people about Lemmy and then never mentioned them again.
Today a mod on this account's old server deleted the 2021 thread, without any explanation but apparently by mistake. If you're looking for the thread, it's on the Internet Archive:

i really dont want to spoil the fun here. I appreciate the effort.
But although #signal is much more popular than #matrix their relationship is like #mastodon to #bluesky. Both bluesky and signal have a #proprietary backend. although their frontent is #OpenSource they technically have a single point of failure. server/cluster down == service down
Mastodon and matrix are actual fediverse services which are undestroyable since they are many federated, independent servers.

hmm, I'll try the TikTok one. TikTok is out of control with the censorship now. They kissed the orange ring.
I can't seem to find it. I highly recommend Neptune but it's just starting beta now. You can sign up for beta but you might be placed on a wait list.
I've been slowly converting family and friends over to #Signal for years now. Here's how usually I do that these days. When a conversation gets into some rather intimate topic - say talk on emotions, or psychology, or other highly private details - then I set a boundary, saying "I'd be willing to discuss this topic further, but only in a more private app like Signal." So I leave them an "out": I'm willing to stay on, say, WhatsApp, *but the conversation has to stay more shallow*.
I also run an #XMPP server (Prosody), but I've had very limited success in getting people to join. Frankly, XMPP is *only* for intrepid geeks at this time, who are willing to put up with several papercuts in usability. Apps like WhatsApp and Signal have "raised the bar" *a lot*, and apps like #Conversations and #Gajim have their work cut out for them to try to catch up to people's sky-high expectations - they've been spoiled.
*A ton more testing and bug-fixing is still needed to iron out quirks that the different XMPP clients have, in talking to each other.*
This goes especially for #iOS or #iPadOS offerings for XMPP.

@Juancho @Daniel Supernault Not the only one.
Mike Macgirvin, the creator of Friendica and Hubzilla, has made a whole tree of at least (...counts...) nine forks after Hubzilla, eight of which were nomadic. Two of them still exist.
One is intentionally nameless, intentionally brandless, intentionally not a project and intentionally released into the public domain. Since the community needed to address to it by something, they took the name of the code repository (which needed a name), put parentheses around it and called it (streams).
It's a fork (2021)
of a fork (Roadhouse; 2021)
of three forks (Osada, Mistpark 2020 a.k.a. Misty, Redmatrix 2020; 2020)
of a fork (Zap; 2018)
of maybe another fork (Osada; non-nomadic; 2018; if Zap was forked from Osada rather than directly from Hubzilla;)
of Hubzilla.
(streams) is reduced in features and connectivity in comparison with Hubzilla, but so were the first Osada and Zap. However, in terms of permission control and nomadicity, it's at least up-to-par with Hubzilla. In fact, it isn't quite as difficult to use as Hubzilla because permission handling has been adapted what the Fediverse of the 2020s actually requires as opposed to what a hypothetical Fediverse of the mid-2010s centred around the Red Matrix would require.
I've made a series of tables that compare Mastodon, Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams). You can find them here.
The other still existing fork is Forte from August, 2024. Forte is a direct fork of (streams). It's highly experimental because all support for the Nomad protocol was removed, and it has to rely on ActivityPub for nomadic identity. Thus, it is not officially released yet, it does not have public instances, and it is not recommended as a stable, reliable daily driver yet.

I agree that Lemmy is a great alternative, personally I use my Sharkey instance to interact with Lemmy users and things still but if I could keep with my instance and make it look like Lemmy when I want to use those parts of the Fediverse, I'd love that.
Either way amazing to see more people use the Fediverse

Just to hopefully assist from newbie perspective, I've been trying Friendica for a few days, I've never used FB so can't compare but I've found Fedilab works well though a little battery hungry and am just trying Raccoon which seems as easy to get around, I found the web interface confusing though.

As long as the instance is not explicitly blocked or muted, I believe the whole Fediverse should be able to federate with you automatically.
User interaction with the server tends to increase the cache.
The users of the instance should therefore be able to be found automatically via hashtag search, hashtag following and explicit following.

Are you sure you want to end your plea for engagement with a quote associated with cynicism towards the thing you are claiming is true?
[Unfortunately, that kind of mangled meaning is associated with AI-generated statements. Also, you could have looked up this stuff to verify it, but apparently you didn't. Hmmm.]
