Spring Gardening 2025 – How it’s going
Early May is less than 3 weeks away, and a lot of planting is going to happen! I've got my community garden plot and my own backyard container garden for vegetables for the family. I started planning back in January. I set up that my goal would be to grow mostly vegetables that are storable - either by canning or just putting into the basement like a quick and dirty root cellar setup. That allowed me to figure out what to plant, based on the community garden plot and in containers. I also […]
So, just in case, I downloaded the entire USDA guide to canning. I refer to it every year when I can. I expect canning more things this year and want to make sure I have access to safe instructions. I'm afraid it might get DOGE'ed

Today was sourdough baking day. Mrs. Chgowiz and I had two loaves in the fridge, ready to go after taking a "Sourdough 101" class on Wed.
Lost track of time on the first loaf, didn't hear the timer go off, so the crust got a bit toasty. The second one turned out fine. Can't wait to cut them open and eat them tonight!

Of course the point of Solnit is that resistance is not spontaneously "popping up like mushrooms", but the fruit of the mycelium of years of organising.
Which doesn't mean that you need years before doing anything, but it does mean you need to start organising NOW if you didn't already.
Find people, at least one. Or even better: join an existing organisation.
Then do something.
Just a little thing. Call a representative, and ask them to put up a fight. Or print a poster of a burning swasticar and hang it in the street. Or collect clothing and food for the people who need it most. Or ask an activist or an organisation you like, what they need most.
You don't have to invent the wheel. You can be a little brick. We don't need heroes, we need to organise. And we need many people who take a little step, and another one, and another one, until the mushrooms bloom.

From 2003 - 2007, I raced amateur stock cars at Lake Geneva Raceway in Wisconsin. Racing runs on money, not fuel. I didn't have full sponsorship, so I learned to improvise - a lot.
So when I buy things and they end up not quite working out, my first thought is usually "How do I modify it to work like I want?"
That's why this crossbow holder now has a much different mount for my tree stand than what it came with.

This was the only planned high dollar purchase this year, so in before the tariffs. 3 lbs lighter, smaller footprint and I'm interested in how the crank cock/decock will work out. Wicked Ridge Commander M1.
Realizing how fast we are traveling through space...
A view on the wall made me realise how fast we are traveling through space, even sitting on a chair...
I have a crystal in my livingroom, it just caught the sun. Little rainbows everywhere, sometimes I make a quick photo of it. I just made 3, watch the location of the rainbow within a few seconds!

A Cosmic Rose: NGC 2237 in Monoceros
The Rosette #Nebula (NGC 2237) in Monoceros, 5,000 light-years away, is a stellar nursery shaped by winds and radiation from its central young stars (NGC 2244). Visible with a small #telescope, the nebula spans about 50 light-years.

There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you…. In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself. ~ Ruth Stout

Troubleshooting
I've been troubleshooting the issues we keep having with Friendica.world.
The site gets unresponsive at nights (CET) around 3AM, and stays that way for a couple of hours. I've been trying to find the reason for that, but no luck yet.
It's not the backup (that runs at a different time), nor are the resources at 100%.
I did just change a setting for pm.max_children
which defines the number of php-fpm
processes which handle the web traffic, because I saw some errors about it having reached the max. This will fix some issues, but not sure if it fixes the freezing of the site.. We'll see I guess..
Volunteers
If there are people with some technical skills, wanting to help out running this thing (or any other instance we run), please send me a DM or mail info@friendica.world.
It's all volunteer work, and we can use some extra hands.
Donations
You can use this instance for free, but if you would like to and are able, you could help us funding the running costs by making a donation: ko-fi.com/fhfworld

Pinnacles in Western Australia foreground this panorama featuring a crescent #Moon amidst zodiacal light and the Milky Way. The 2015 image captures these limestone spires, whose formation is a mystery, under a star-studded sky.

OK, seeding/planting calendar is planned! Things start happening around the end of March, with me starting seeds. Most things go in the ground around Mother's Day (11 May) and after. These next two months can't pass fast enough!

WOOHOO! Just got an email from the DNR...
"CONGRATULATIONS! You have been awarded a 2025 4th season IRAP site in the permitted county for which you applied."
That means I'm going to get two trips to the plate this year for spring gobblers! Can't wait!
Blog post - an example of AD&D combat
It's been something I've been saying for awhile - by-the-book AD&D combat is not that difficult! Definitely not as difficult as I would say compared to more modern versions. Presentation? I'll give ya that. But in actual flow and mechanics? I don't find it to be so!
Recap of 4 Feb 25 Classic Traveller/Battlestar Galactica game:
The Fleet Scouts made it to the core of a Cylon Basestar, only to find a dying AI whose demise will trigger a ship-wide self-destruct. Now they have to flee, only an open door and catwalk beyond reveals a trio of Mark 1 Centurions waiting!
They've also learned that the Cylons use organic brains to help them jump, thus explaining why there were comatose humans in a storeroom and a brain floating in a large globe with star system graphics all around it.

Anticrepuscular Rays: A Rainbow Fan over Spain
A rare sight captured in Lekeitio, Spain, shows a rainbow with anticrepuscular rays converging opposite the sunset. This optical illusion occurs as sunlight reflects off rain and is partially blocked by clouds, creating a serene and surreal scene.

Wolf-Rayet Star 124: Stellar Wind Machine
Massive Wolf-Rayet star WR 124 is disintegrating in slow motion, ejecting gas globs over 30 #Earth masses. Its violent winds form #nebula M1-67, spanning six light-years. The process, ongoing for 20,000 years, remains under study. WR 124 is 15,000 light-years away in Sagitta and may end in a supernova or gamma-ray burst.
