'1,000 former patients are suing Tavistock for being given gender affirming care!' was the battle cry Jordan Peterson and other transphobes used to undermine trans youth healthcare. Yet a new freedom of information request (FOI) has blown said lie right open.

Bullies are often fundamentally cowardly: if their home, or their country is under attack they rank saving their own life and possessions first and above the group.
A bully will expect any group they target to crumble in a similar manner. The idea that their threats and attacks might cause people to find a common cause, that it might inspire bravery and unification is not something they can anticipate or imagine.
Because were it them? They would shove the child out of the lifeboat and run.

Nothing irritates a bully more than when someone else demonstrates the courage or honor that they lack. They will have an immediate need to prove that any such acts were either a sign that the person was duped, or that the sacrifice was motivated by a desire for public acclaim, not any principles or moral values.
To confront true selflessness is terrifying for the bully. Nothing could be more alien. Nothing more clearly calls into question their own self worth.
No! It's virtue signaling!

There is this cynical and currently popular idea that everything is "virtue signaling" and to some extent it's true. Part of why people do what is right even when it won't benefit them is about making a statement to themselves and others about what we value.
But, it's also ... not that hard, not even that remarkable to really want to be a good person even when you don't personally benefit. I'd even suggest it's normal.

doing good that doesnt benefit us in some obvious and direct way is normal in that it occurs in other species as well. Not to mention, we often do what's right while actively avoiding recognition for it.
We've just drifted so far from a recognition that what's good for all is of course good for us: we, too, live in the better world we are making with kind, honest, and/or courageous acts. We *are* everybody and everybody is us. It makes me sad -- and it's not a little scary -- all these people who do not see the intricate, interconnected web of all life as it is.

Very well put.
“virtue signalling” did start out as a value neutral term just for describing a completely normal social thing literally everyone does; like a generalisation of role modeling.
What was done to it is what happens to a lot of words and phrases: the right wing got hold of it, either misunderstood it or deliberately distorted its meaning, and for some reason everyone else adopted their framing

@sinvega it’s a pattern that goals back way prior to the algorithm- the earliest example i know of being “Politically Correct”
i vaguely remember seeing a segment on a guy whose professional job was coming up with these language manipulations- i remember him calling it “neurolinguistic programming” but when i tried to look that up it described some unrelated pseudoscience
Yes. The Republicans have been excellent at Maddison Avenue manipulation of our speech. It goes all the way back to Reagan's Morning in America campaign if not before. It was definitely prevalent with the framing of the Healthcare initiatives as being manned by death panels.
Wish I could remember it but the guy who came up with the Republican talking points during George W. Bush's terms had a documentary about him out ages ago.
I think you are right: it's normal (but not universal) to want to be a good person.
Learning about goodness from our parents or other mentors is very important, but it is not the only source of motivation to be good.
Experiments with chimpanzees, bonobos, other mammals, even birds, have shown that "fairness" is not a concept that is unique to humans.
However, goodness isn't universal. There are evil people, and they love evil societies. Good people must resist them.
I am of the opinion that the best response to an accusation of virtue signalling goes something like this:
PERSON A: You're virtue signalling!
PERSON B: (PAUSE) …and?
If you're sincere, then there's nothing wrong with being open about it so others can see. It's the same reason why we resist (excessive) swearing in front of children. It's behavior modeling. You're showing other people the person (or Owlbear) you want to be.
(I am aware that some people are being insincere, but that's a different issue)
With the implication that if no one was there to see you doing it, you wouldn't bother to do the right thing.
Is my interpretation false ?
(English is not my first language)
Because if it isn't, obviously this is an awful thing to do.
Bear in mind that with the right it's ALWAYS projection, I read their accusations of "virtue signaling" as a confession of deep cynicism–they don't really believe anything they say so they don't understand how anyone else could, either.

There is a difference between bullies and "the right" ... there are people on the right who believe in things. Some I can even agree with, but other ideas are ... deeply uninformed. This is what a political debate is mean to be about.
I do think that at this moment bullies, may find the right more accommodating to the kinds of things they want to do... but if a bully can get what they want with other values the values change.

All of this online manipulation is supporting people who are either out to get me personally or who I just don't agree with much, which I find very annoying.
The bots keep getting more sophisticated. It's nice that we don't see them often around here.
That last one could have been fine... IF IT WASN'T SECRET.
Also some of the "oversight" they wanted was odious. You might recognize some of the people who got involved.
Do you have any links about that? I was pretty disapointed to see David Packman on that list. Packman is a liberal but I always thought he was the kind of person who would understand why taking *secret* money would be upsetting to his audience.
To be clear there ought to be more support like this for creators. The right is doing this kind of thing so much and people think left wing news will just come out of the ether for free. But it needs to be out in the open.
Also I thought Taylor was fine? At least as journalists go... what alarmed you?
ah for sure dropping a lot of unsourced innuendo is never helpful. As for the YouTube short I saw where one creator who was named saying that was wrong and he wasn’t being paid I don’t remember which one it was. There’s this one which isn’t exactly from the mouths of the creators themselves but it’s the gist of it.
Not thrilled with this response from Tabitha :/
On the other hand she's always been pretty open about being a supporter of Democrats (as opposed to a reporter or commentator.)
I'm not the biggest fan of her content but I don't have anything against her really.
Oh yeah. Fair enough. I wasn’t meaning to endorse it just came up in my recently watched and she does say she saw people saying it got details wrong.
I don’t follow her but she comes up in my algorithm occasionally and sometimes is pretty funny. But for sure she’s in the tank for the Dems.
I wrote a very mild comment something like "this would have been fine if it weren't secret IMO. Packman has talked about it."
She deleted it in like 20 seconds.
Like. Am I being unreasonable? I understand and even agree with just not talking to right wing people. It's a waste of time.
But I always have patience for liberals and for leftists.
But, from time to time I encounter either liberals who wall them self off from "self righteous purity testers" or leftists who ARE "self righteous purity testers" (most are not in my experience) I'm kinda of sick of both of ya'll.
myrmepropagandist reshared this.
Also there is probably some truth to Taylor Lorenz just stirring up trouble to some degree. That's kind of her instinct. I kind of like it about her, but she can fail to read the room.
But I think that's part of journalism. If you don't ever make people angry (provided you are telling something true) you are bad at it.
Something I didn't understand was all of the comments on Tabatha's video saying "of course this happens at THIS moment mm hmm"
???
This is the perfect moment to be critical of Democrats, to do the deep cleaning and get right. When it is closer to an election even I might shut up. But, this kind of disappointing sneaky stuff is killing them.
I guess we'll have to see how the centrists who follow them react.
Weren't we all just clowning on Tim Pool for taking secret Russian money to apologize for and praise Putin a few months back?
I don't think this is as bad as that at all. But it is not good. It's dishonest. It's depressing. These things must be disclosed.
Solidarity, Reg.
I think the problem with Lorenz is similar to the problem with Rogan - Rogan himself, when doing his show, is uncritical to a fault, not coming back at any ideas, good or bad, while practising a false "neutrality" where he lets any fascist-adjacent figure on for a good long airing out, while occasionally throwing in Bernie or summat for the appearance of "both sides".
I do not know Lorenz well, but the one thing I did notice was when she did the friendly luncheon interview a few years back, with the LibsOfTikTok woman, and the article was very... Roganesque in its approach to her terrible, terrible ideas.
the heck is a "trumpo" sounds like the worst pokemon ever

Three things neither the Democrats or Republicans have never been in the entirety of US history:
* anti-war
* pro justice

But they do seem to enjoy bombing civilians, selective application of the law, and the annihilation of the majority of species on Earth (including humans) in favor of large profit for 1% or less of the current human population.
Neoliberals are a curse upon humanity.
against having an overt Iranian proxy causing violence within their borders.
against aid money being used to stockpile arms that are later used against them and building tunnels instead of being used for the economic development & well being of the territory for the benefit of the inhabitants of that territory.
this is about HAMAS, not genocide.
The children suffer the consequences of their elders in every nation.
exactly.
The West Bank has it's problems too, yet things are a lot more peaceful over there. Same people, but different management.
See the difference it makes in the lives of those who live there, vs. those who live in Gaza.
This too, undermines the (I believe, phony..) genocide narrative.
Hamas wants to wage their phony propaganda war, showing pictures of dead babies and starving children. When the truth comes to light, it will be yet another campaign Hamas loses. Something that has always been telling to me- where are the paved roads in Gaza? you hardly see 1 mile of paved road there. Where does that money go? They have exquisite tunnels under Gaza yet hardly any paved roads even in city centers.
There will never be a war crimes tribunal. The issues have been too muddied by history. This one is going to be settled the same way Alexander settled the partition of his empire among his generals upon his death:
"tôi kratistôi"—"to the strongest"
Both sides seem to want this very badly at the highest levels of their respective societies. But questions of right or wrong aside, I think I already know which side is the stronger. Common sense tells me
i've heard israel finally has had to start making some of its own munitions, is that really so much of a problem?
anyways, i look into this ken martin, and apparently he warned of some perception that "democrats are seen as elites, republicans are seen as working class" and then... goes on to do something like this
i wish i knew what he was thinking here
anyways, dnc, nearly everyone is telling you to stop selling bombs to israel, so please, just stop embarrassing yourselves
Instructions unclear, 5 trillion dollars to Isreal!
Certainly war crimes have been committed- on both sides, and the perpetrators would certainly be found guilt *if tried*...
but the likelihood of a tribunal that is both legal and holds together long enough to execute a sentence is, in my view, remote..
@RememberUsAlways @konosocio
well, Netanyahu may be long dead, at any rate..

Haven't the Saudis, Jordanians and Egypt already been bought and paid for via US military aid?
Syria is in disarray, Iraq, Lebanon- irrelevant, Kuwait squarely in the US's corner.. who else remains? Arab opinion on the street? The postage stamp sized gulf states?
There is no love lost between Jordan and the Palestinians. Egypt barely tolerates them and the Saudis want nothing to do with them. Where is the Palestinian's base of support?
@RememberUsAlways @konosocio
if the Iranian revolution has been defeated and a new Government can rise in Iran, a window of opportunity for Palestinians will open.

This is the relevant API:
developer.android.com/privacy-…
This is the metadata which can be provided as part of the public key certificate of the attested key:
source.android.com/docs/securi…
Note some of the features are limited to privileged system components and in practice exist for enterprise device management. Only privileged OS components can do attestation for any of the hardware identifiers since those aren't accessible to regular apps.
Can see it's mostly about keys.
Verify hardware-backed key pairs with key attestation
A tool for verifying security properties of hardware-backed key pairs.Android Developers
It provides some metadata for the app (package name, version code, signing key fingerprints) and OS (verified boot state, verified boot key, major version, patch levels).
Privileged system components with the privileges to access hardware IDs can use it to verify the hardware IDs they can access to make sure a device really has the serial number it appears to have. This is there for device management to provide assurance what's registering matches what was shipped.
...but you're pushing apps to do their OS integrity checks using the standard attestation API instead of Play Integrity. if that's what you prefer, wouldn't it be good to act consequently? is it at least planned for the future?
(also I'd argue that even the original uses of attestation, where you only get to check that the key is in a genuine keystore, are DRM. as a user I should be able to control how I store my keys. that a service can refuse to operate unless I store my session key in a place that prevents me from migrating it to another device is an antifeature)
Jeremy List reshared this.
The only cases we know of apps using the hardware attestation API to permit GrapheneOS are alongside using the Play Integrity API to permit stock OS GMS devices.
We have limited resources to implement features. There are literally around 800 or so planned features and they get implemented very slowly. It means little for a feature to be planned without it being a high priority or becoming one at some point.
Nice to have in theory doesn't mean it would get added.

@cuddlebug Oh this will be a complete disaster. There are three signing keys in circulation for the Android app com.bithack.principia, commonly known as Principia:
- Bithack's signing key used when the game was proprietary and distributed on Google Play, the status of the keystore is unknown but there are almost definitively still active installs lying around somewhere
- My own signing key which I had been using for signing unofficial mods for the game before the open source release happened, now I use it for the Android releases we distribute independently
- F-Droid's signing key used for releases distributed through F-Droid, they're probably not going to go through this process but there is likely a substantial installbase for the F-Droid version
I only have access to the private key for one of these. How in the world will Google determine that I may be the rightful entity that will be allowed to distribute com.bithack.principia on Android going forward? How am I distinguishable from someone just squatting on the app ID for all these years?
So many questions that wouldn't need to be asked if Google had just remained leaving users direct installing APKs alone.

Yeah nah Android has lost all its edges over iOS for me. The only thing they got left that I find interesting is quirky hardware form-factors like foldables.
But its been going on for a while now with Play Integrity, its recent changes, Pairip and Key Attestation (specifically around the inclusion of bootloader status, the rest seems fine and useful) and policy changes like this in general. I loved custom roms, rooting and all the freedom you had with Android. Now I don't see any of that left.
Unless you go through the questionable effort of finding leaked key material (just look at the amount of already revoked leaked keys, secure isn't it?) custom roms or rooting is already not really a viable thing to do on your primary (Various apps I use require some form of Play Integrity beyond BASIC). And recently OEMs have straight up started locking away the unlock bootloader options.
They can keep saying how this is for security, yet running an outdated AF android version without patches is considered more "trustworthy" than a more recent custom ROM if you were to believe Play Integrity.
Sure, I see security improvements, like Key Attestation (excl. bootloader status) and some of the checks done by Play Integrity / Protect, but I also see a lot of platform & store lock-in and a chance to sell more, newer devices.

i own the device, i transitively own the sum total of capability in the physical object. this is an affront against my ownership
@slowfallinward @raito
Let me start by saying Im no fan of Google keeping a register of every dev who wants to have their apps work on the majority of Android devices!
However, think this will be enforced by Play Protect, which IIUC (in 15 years of using android devices Ive never run a device with Play Services) can easily be turned off. No need to flash a different OS to avoid this.
@slowfallinward @raito
I do very much think it should be possible to run a different OS on all consumer smartphones.
They should support yellow state - relocking the bootloader & getting full verified boot - by flashing the signing keys for the OS onto the device. Its not good that many devices only offer running something else with bootloader unlocked. Shouldnt have to accept this huge downgrade in security against local & remote exploitation, in order to run something else
Emmett Till would've been 84 today. He was only 14 when white supremacist terrorists horrifically murdered him.
The white woman Carolyn Bryant Donham who accused him of harassing her later confessed she lied. The warrant for her arrest was never enforced. She died only 2 years ago in 2023 at the age of 88.
White supremacy terrorism isn't ancient history. It's not even history. It's contemporary reality.

A "certified Android device" means a normal Android phone. If you haven't flashed a custom ROM or a different operating system like postmarketOS to your phone, you probably have a "certified Android device".
So, if you have a normal Android phone, you will not be able to install apps from developers who are not approved by Google. This gives Google power to block developers and apps it does not like.
This also applies to apps you might acquire outside Google Play, like from F-Droid.³

Not only this harms your freedom to install any app you want on your own Android phone, but also this is harmful for privacy/anonymity of Android developers who do not wish to give their personal information to Google.

It might be possible, but also out of reach of the typical user.
Besides, banking apps require a "certified Android device", which also excludes custom ROMs. Banks pretty much require we own a smartphone to consult our accounts. The new European age verification thing also has a reference implementation that requires Android with Google Services.
So we have Google closing their ecosystem on one hand, and apps and regulations forcing us to Google on the other hand
@murdoc
Well... shit.
Then again, I picked a phone precisely because there was a privacy-friendly Android version for it.
This may be the last straw to actually install it.
@christian_freiherr_von_wolff Then you probably can install apps without Google's restrictions. (assuming your phone isn't a "certified Android device")
@populistensohn @christian_freiherr_von_wolff It doesn't impact GrapheneOS users either for the base OS or for people who install/use sandboxed Google Play.
Pixels are the supported devices because they're the most secure Android devices and provide proper support for using another OS. Nearly all other Android devices lack the required security features and nearly all also lack proper alternate OS support. Other Android devices don't provide the expected level of driver/firmware updates.
Mmmhhh, that's gonna get interesting, then. GrapheneOS only guaranteed runs on google pixel phones.
Can it get any more "certified" than that?
⚛️Revertron reshared this.
Time to make serious work of Linux on mobile , that is the only long term viable solution. All custom ROMs are in the end fully dependant on Google that can always kill these projects as soon as they become relevant or close to mainstream.

How can we get non-certified ones?
Okay...
I have another question then.
To use graphene os, do we need to have specific phones, like the google pixels ones (which is really weird if that is the case)? Could graphene os be installed on the one I have right now (galaxy s9)?
@globcoco @christian_freiherr_von_wolff You need one of the devices meeting our hardware requirements which are supported by GrapheneOS.
Samsung Galaxy devices either do not allow installing another OS or cripple the device's functionality including hardware-based security features if you use one. Galaxy S9 is also end-of-life since a long time ago and lacks driver/firmware security patches along with not having modern security features.

Idk if that is true or not...

That is your area of expertise; until you said that I was under the impression it was akin to installing a new OS on a PC with some extra hurdles. Sorry if that's not a good brand suggestion, and thank you for the time replying
@globcoco Usually with a computer/laptop that came with Windows, you can install a different OS (E.g.: Linux, BSD) on it without much trouble.
Lot of Androd phone manufacturers make it difficult for people to change the operating system of their phones. Surprisingly, it's easier with Google's Pixel phones than lot of other brands.

If I had the money to do so, I'd absolutely live on a self sufficient farm somewhere near my home town.

@xjix As someone who works in tech, I just want to do that for so many reasons.
I just want to be a mountain man, though…lol
Having been a farmer and also worked in upper levels of tech...
I can tell you that you probably don't really want to choose farming over tech.
But if you can find a niche in "art", making even a modest income, that can really be a good life.
Former farmer who's now a programmer here.
Just... don't.
🤷🏼♂️
@TimWardCam
It's silly. A seven day working week, dawn to well past dusk, judging from the tractor lights in the fields round here. If it's a livestock farm, everything smells of shit, all the time.
I love my nice computers. They sit and wait until I'm ready.
The longer you spend in capitalism, the stronger the urge to move to subsistence farming.
The medicine really feels like the only meaningful advantage of modern society.
Problem is, where I live you need a computer to run a farm to do all the necessary paperwork.
Long ago I learned the hard way to appreciate problems solvable with pencil and paper, compared to needing a computer! Anyway...
"A computer is all well and good. But to do any real work you need a kitchen table".
Also, I haven't owned a printer for 20 years. I hated them as a commercial programmer before I even owned my first, because files to be printed are more complex than any other type of file.
Ask us. 🌿☮️
I'm an independent software developer for 33 years now and I love doing this. There is nothing else I'd prefer.
The longer I work in tech, the more the thought of the unevitable retirement due to old age comes to mind...
At least it has the advantage that nobody can force me to do what I don't like like using Microsoft Teams.
Grass is always greener on the other side.
yep, yep and yep.
30+ years in IT = now 8 years on a farm.
And only working for/with paid #FOSS.
good work which /makes sense/ - and farming equipment sustains scratches and outlives 50+ years - and can be maintained and repaired.
Most importantly (IMO):
producing good and healthy FOOD is actually something I'm proud to show and teach my kids.
On the other hand, growing your own food is like printing money.
That's exactly what Luke Smith's Deepfake, Kenny did. To raise some open source chickens
I know someone who bought a farm (technically they are building the farm) and STILL works in IT.
Maybe they misunderstood the concept...
@Hemera 😂
My own spin on that is "the stronger the urge to never deal with Corporate America again"
It's not the tech I can't stand, it's the business around it.
Strangely, I have done the reverse.
I'm still looking for a way to get back to the outdoors.
Its not tech, its capitalism. People who build the fanciest shit can go on for their whole lives.
But slaving away your live for some dipshit with a huge inheritance ruins everything. Having to focus solely on the incompetence of others (support) or imaginary numbers (devops) is what drives people to hate tech.
We need to have a system that values actual controbution to society instead of arbitrary "profits".
I suspect most people who say that have never actually worked in a farm, or they wouldn't.
I'd prefer to spend my time in a more meaningful way too... But hell, not working the land: way too much work for way too little (and uncertain) returns.
I had not realized me buying myself into a communal farm was a trend…
But yes, I feel this. Tech is great, the industry mostly is not

The image features a wall mural of a man in a suit and helmet, depicted in a cartoonish style. He is floating in the air, holding onto a steering wheel-like object with both hands. Attached to his back is a red fire extinguisher labeled "SIFEX POWDER," which is creatively integrated into the design to resemble a jetpack. The man's posture suggests he is ascending, with his head tilted back and eyes looking upwards. The background is a plain white wall, and the floor is carpeted in a dark color. The mural is located in an office setting, as indicated by the visible door and office environment.
