Bullies are often fundamentally cowardly: if their home, or their country is under attack they rank saving their own life and possessions first and above the group.
A bully will expect any group they target to crumble in a similar manner. The idea that their threats and attacks might cause people to find a common cause, that it might inspire bravery and unification is not something they can anticipate or imagine.
Because were it them? They would shove the child out of the lifeboat and run.

Nothing irritates a bully more than when someone else demonstrates the courage or honor that they lack. They will have an immediate need to prove that any such acts were either a sign that the person was duped, or that the sacrifice was motivated by a desire for public acclaim, not any principles or moral values.
To confront true selflessness is terrifying for the bully. Nothing could be more alien. Nothing more clearly calls into question their own self worth.

There is this cynical and currently popular idea that everything is "virtue signaling" and to some extent it's true. Part of why people do what is right even when it won't benefit them is about making a statement to themselves and others about what we value.
But, it's also ... not that hard, not even that remarkable to really want to be a good person even when you don't personally benefit. I'd even suggest it's normal.

Is virtue “signaling” so bad if it’s sincere, and willing to draw consequences? Passive attraction mirrors virtue signalling? Isn’t this a purity argument to begin with?
doing good that doesnt benefit us in some obvious and direct way is normal in that it occurs in other species as well. Not to mention, we often do what's right while actively avoiding recognition for it.
We've just drifted so far from a recognition that what's good for all is of course good for us: we, too, live in the better world we are making with kind, honest, and/or courageous acts. We *are* everybody and everybody is us. It makes me sad -- and it's not a little scary -- all these people who do not see the intricate, interconnected web of all life as it is.

“virtue signalling” did start out as a value neutral term just for describing a completely normal social thing literally everyone does; like a generalisation of role modeling.
What was done to it is what happens to a lot of words and phrases: the right wing got hold of it, either misunderstood it or deliberately distorted its meaning, and for some reason everyone else adopted their framing

For example “Socialist” and “Hippie” went through the meaning grinder in the US way before Internet was a thing.

Yes. The Republicans have been excellent at Maddison Avenue manipulation of our speech. It goes all the way back to Reagan's Morning in America campaign if not before. It was definitely prevalent with the framing of the Healthcare initiatives as being manned by death panels.
Wish I could remember it but the guy who came up with the Republican talking points during George W. Bush's terms had a documentary about him out ages ago.
When I first encountered the term "virtue signalling", I thought how apt that was for things like politicians harping on about how upset they were about people's suffering, when they had the power to change everything. It was dizzying how quickly it moved from "signalling virtue, doing nothing" to "making the world a better place but perhaps for a less than pure and saintly reason."
I think you are right: it's normal (but not universal) to want to be a good person.
Learning about goodness from our parents or other mentors is very important, but it is not the only source of motivation to be good.
Experiments with chimpanzees, bonobos, other mammals, even birds, have shown that "fairness" is not a concept that is unique to humans.
However, goodness isn't universal. There are evil people, and they love evil societies. Good people must resist them.

I am of the opinion that the best response to an accusation of virtue signalling goes something like this:
PERSON A: You're virtue signalling!
PERSON B: (PAUSE) …and?
If you're sincere, then there's nothing wrong with being open about it so others can see. It's the same reason why we resist (excessive) swearing in front of children. It's behavior modeling. You're showing other people the person (or Owlbear) you want to be.
(I am aware that some people are being insincere, but that's a different issue)

Although they are similarly blindsided as the left as of not being able to conceive other people don't think like them. On the right, it manifests in dehumanization and projection, on the left it manifests in compromises that are mostly abandons of their professed values.

There is a difference between bullies and "the right" ... there are people on the right who believe in things. Some I can even agree with, but other ideas are ... deeply uninformed. This is what a political debate is mean to be about.
I do think that at this moment bullies, may find the right more accommodating to the kinds of things they want to do... but if a bully can get what they want with other values the values change.

The effort to do so has met with a good deal of success in pressuring independent outlets to offer as much to freelancers as we can. We often manage to get within striking distance of the rates of established media and exceed the rates of abusive venture-capital owned shells like Vice.
We typically do this by paying ourselves less. That's how the math works. So, for example, I work 30hr/week moderating comments for Slate in addition to 40ish hrs for Assigned Media, while paying myself less than I make from Slate. Not complaining, but that's how I afford to pay freelancers.
Making a living freelancing at the moment is increasingly difficult, if not impossible, bc there isn't enough work. No one can support themselves solely through Assigned freelancing, but if there was a thriving ecosystem of small outlets paying similar rates ($150-200/piece) you could do OK.

All of this online manipulation is supporting people who are either out to get me personally or who I just don't agree with much, which I find very annoying.
The bots keep getting more sophisticated. It's nice that we don't see them often around here.

Also some of the "oversight" they wanted was odious. You might recognize some of the people who got involved.
I would take that last one with a grain of salt. The author is known for being needlessly provocative, misrepresenting her subject, and getting stuff wrong. Some creators have already come out and said that they did not receive money.
Do you have any links about that? I was pretty disapointed to see David Packman on that list. Packman is a liberal but I always thought he was the kind of person who would understand why taking *secret* money would be upsetting to his audience.
To be clear there ought to be more support like this for creators. The right is doing this kind of thing so much and people think left wing news will just come out of the ether for free. But it needs to be out in the open.

I think the problem with Lorenz is similar to the problem with Rogan - Rogan himself, when doing his show, is uncritical to a fault, not coming back at any ideas, good or bad, while practising a false "neutrality" where he lets any fascist-adjacent figure on for a good long airing out, while occasionally throwing in Bernie or summat for the appearance of "both sides".
I do not know Lorenz well, but the one thing I did notice was when she did the friendly luncheon interview a few years back, with the LibsOfTikTok woman, and the article was very... Roganesque in its approach to her terrible, terrible ideas.
as for my own thoughts on Taylor. Back in the late days of twitter I remember she got pushback on her stories a lot of the time and was rather glib and unserious in addressing criticism. trying to figure out if this is more or less restrictive than ios. one ios dev i talked to this morning say the process has now liberalized to the point they only ask for a name and phone number, not a per se id verification
you'll also have to agree to some terms of service that are not yet public AFAIK, give them an email + phone number, verify them, then give them your public key and sign a challenge using the key (to prove you have the private part) and only then you may be given ownership of a package name.

We don't approve of DRM but rather we document how apps implementing it can still support GrapheneOS. We push app developers to stop using it and if they won't do that push them to use a system where they can permit specific alternate operating systems and alternate hardware based on allowlists instead of only allowing Google Mobile Services devices. It results in GrapheneOS users being able to use apps which would otherwise ban it. Some users need those apps to work.

Pinning-based hardware attestation is a security feature and not usable for DRM. Only root-based hardware attestation is available that way. If you want to stop apps using it, you need to talk to the app developers. GrapheneOS has no part in apps adopting it in the first place, only pressuring apps to use the standard Android API for where they can permit other operating systems and hardware instead of the Play Integrity API which uses it but doesn't offer it.
We've successfully convinced around a dozen apps which have adopted the Play Integrity API to allow GrapheneOS by permitting it via an open API not depending on a Google service where other hardware and operating systems can be permitted. We've also convinced a couple apps to stop doing any of this because it doesn't add security. There are government or industry requirements for some types of apps to verify device/OS integrity so some can't be convinced to drop it.
good to know. that's certainly not the impression I got when someone from grapheneos reacted to the EU wallet prototype using Play Integrity by basically asking them to instead use the standard Android API, though... my memory isn't the best but I don't think the message was pushing back against attestation at all. but i can chalk that as a one off
EU regulations require banking apps to implement attestation but don't specify exactly how it has to be done. That issue tracker isn't the place to argue about laws they already passed. We were pushing back against them specifically requiring the Play Integrity API which is within the control of the people working on that standard. The people working on that standard don't have control over the regulations which require attestation in the EU now.

If a service implements mandatory attestation, not allowing it to be done prevents using the service in the same way that a result not conforming to their requirements prevents it. GrapheneOS does have a toggle for blocking the Play Integrity API for temporarily using apps which have not yet fully integrated it into their service but rather are phasing in support and still permit not providing the result. This can only work before they've fully implemented it.
You can't simply block using it and avoid the requirements. It would defeat the entire purpose. The whole point is that there's no way to spoof or bypass hardware attestation beyond leaked keys. Leaked keys can be detected and revoked. Discontinued SafetyNet Attestation API initially only had software emulation of what would later be implemented via hardware and Play Integrity API device integrity level is still doing a transitional phase in of hardware attestation.

GrapheneOS intercepts apps talking to the Play Integrity API in Play services and provides a notification about it. Users can choose to use a toggle to block it. This rarely helps with anything and it's not at all a privacy issue for apps to be allowed to use it. Hardly anything directly uses hardware attestation in practice beyond Play services for the Play Integrity API and a few apps which provided it as an alternative to Play Integrity based on our push for it.

Not beyond the logs visible in our log viewer feature. We added the Play Integrity API notification and control due to apps banning GrapheneOS with it. We aren't aware of an app using the hardware attestation API to ban using GrapheneOS so we didn't prioritize showing users when that was why they can't use the app. It was done for the Play Integrity API so users know why an app isn't working and can leave a review, make a customer support request, etc.
Being able to block it for the Play Integrity API also turned out to be useful for at least a few cases of apps in the process of adopting it. Blocking it will break some apps which require providing it but don't disallow an alternate OS with it (yet) so blocking it for any app using it will reduce app compatibility, significantly in fact. A lot of apps just use the basic level which allows an OS like GrapheneOS which it thinks looks reasonable.
Blocking it will only improve compatibility if an app's service disallows having an alternate OS but permits not successfully providing a Play Integrity API response at all. This is never supposed to be the case, but it sometimes happens as part of a transition where they shipped it in the app but aren't ready to enforce it in the service. They may not yet want to block using old app versions and happened to implement it in a way that blocking it is treated that way.
you seem to be very focused on making apps work over making them DRM free... DRM is still DRM even if the service provider has allowlisted your OS and the app works there. if an app is only working because I'm using your particular signed builds of your particular OS, that's IMO just as important to know as when the app doesn't work. it's why Firefox notifies/asks even when the website's DRM is compatible with it
Many apps implement checks for which OS is allowed without attestation. It can often be easily bypassed. There's no way to detect it happening in general since it's not knowable why the app is doing stuff. Using root-based hardware attestation does not imply disallowing anything about the OS. The original purpose of the API was to verify that a generated hardware-backed key is truly in a hardware-backed keystore. It's the hardware key attestation API.
The metadata the API provides about the OS and app is usable for hardware attestation of those but it's actually a secondary purpose of the API. The reason that an app is using key attestation is usually not going to be checking the OS integrity since in practice nearly all apps doing that are using the Play Integrity API for it. Nearly all apps using key attestation just want to check if keys are hardware backed, not the OS integrity they'd check via Play Integrity.

Note some of the features are limited to privileged system components and in practice exist for enterprise device management. Only privileged OS components can do attestation for any of the hardware identifiers since those aren't accessible to regular apps.

It provides some metadata for the app (package name, version code, signing key fingerprints) and OS (verified boot state, verified boot key, major version, patch levels).
Privileged system components with the privileges to access hardware IDs can use it to verify the hardware IDs they can access to make sure a device really has the serial number it appears to have. This is there for device management to provide assurance what's registering matches what was shipped.
The main purpose of the API is verifying that a hardware backed key is really hardware backed and has the properties which were supposed to be set. It exists so that an attacker with existing access from exploiting can't easily intercept generating the key and then pretend there's a hardware backed key generated. That was the main purpose of this API, but they also used it as the hardware attestation API for the OS and app. Play Integrity API uses it for that.
It's useful for it to be the same API since you end up with a key you can use for signing messages where the key would stop being usable if the hardware keystore didn't receive what it expected from the boot chain. There isn't any real reason to have a separate non-key-related hardware attestation API, so instead the OS / app hardware attestation exists as a secondary feature of the key attestation API. Could we warn about it? Sure, definitely not by default though.
...but you're pushing apps to do their OS integrity checks using the standard attestation API instead of Play Integrity. if that's what you prefer, wouldn't it be good to act consequently? is it at least planned for the future?
(also I'd argue that even the original uses of attestation, where you only get to check that the key is in a genuine keystore, are DRM. as a user I should be able to control how I store my keys. that a service can refuse to operate unless I store my session key in a place that prevents me from migrating it to another device is an antifeature)

We only added the Play Integrity API notification and toggle because it was useful to figure out why apps are not working and in very rare cases to trick them into working (likely only temporarily). We aren't aware of a case of banning GrapheneOS via the standard API. It's highly unlikely blocking using it would accomplish anything since using the standard API largely implies being less clueless and therefore far less likely to set it up where blocking it works.
The only cases we know of apps using the hardware attestation API to permit GrapheneOS are alongside using the Play Integrity API to permit stock OS GMS devices.
We have limited resources to implement features. There are literally around 800 or so planned features and they get implemented very slowly. It means little for a feature to be planned without it being a high priority or becoming one at some point.
Nice to have in theory doesn't mean it would get added.
We not only have limited resources to implement features but limited resources to maintain them. All changes to AOSP need to be ported to new major versions 4 times a year. That is a huge ordeal and we do not have enough development resources to deal with it well enough already. The more we add, the more overloaded we're going to get. We do not add features involving aOSP changes which are not very important. Everything we add to AOSP much be very important.
Adding a feature involving any change to either AOSP or Chromium must be justified by significant impact. Adding niche frills is not something we do as a general rule. We do not have the resources to port unimportant stuff to each new major Android release, which is a time sensitive port required for continued full privacy/security patches. Wanting something if we didn't have to worry about that doesn't mean we can provide it in practice.

@cuddlebug Oh this will be a complete disaster. There are three signing keys in circulation for the Android app com.bithack.principia, commonly known as Principia:
- Bithack's signing key used when the game was proprietary and distributed on Google Play, the status of the keystore is unknown but there are almost definitively still active installs lying around somewhere
- My own signing key which I had been using for signing unofficial mods for the game before the open source release happened, now I use it for the Android releases we distribute independently
- F-Droid's signing key used for releases distributed through F-Droid, they're probably not going to go through this process but there is likely a substantial installbase for the F-Droid version
I only have access to the private key for one of these. How in the world will Google determine that I may be the rightful entity that will be allowed to distribute com.bithack.principia on Android going forward? How am I distinguishable from someone just squatting on the app ID for all these years?
So many questions that wouldn't need to be asked if Google had just remained leaving users direct installing APKs alone.

Yeah nah Android has lost all its edges over iOS for me. The only thing they got left that I find interesting is quirky hardware form-factors like foldables.
But its been going on for a while now with Play Integrity, its recent changes, Pairip and Key Attestation (specifically around the inclusion of bootloader status, the rest seems fine and useful) and policy changes like this in general. I loved custom roms, rooting and all the freedom you had with Android. Now I don't see any of that left.
Unless you go through the questionable effort of finding leaked key material (just look at the amount of already revoked leaked keys, secure isn't it?) custom roms or rooting is already not really a viable thing to do on your primary (Various apps I use require some form of Play Integrity beyond BASIC). And recently OEMs have straight up started locking away the unlock bootloader options.
They can keep saying how this is for security, yet running an outdated AF android version without patches is considered more "trustworthy" than a more recent custom ROM if you were to believe Play Integrity.
Sure, I see security improvements, like Key Attestation (excl. bootloader status) and some of the checks done by Play Integrity / Protect, but I also see a lot of platform & store lock-in and a chance to sell more, newer devices.

Let me start by saying Im no fan of Google keeping a register of every dev who wants to have their apps work on the majority of Android devices!
However, think this will be enforced by Play Protect, which IIUC (in 15 years of using android devices Ive never run a device with Play Services) can easily be turned off. No need to flash a different OS to avoid this.

I do very much think it should be possible to run a different OS on all consumer smartphones.
They should support yellow state - relocking the bootloader & getting full verified boot - by flashing the signing keys for the OS onto the device. Its not good that many devices only offer running something else with bootloader unlocked. Shouldnt have to accept this huge downgrade in security against local & remote exploitation, in order to run something else

A "certified Android device" means a normal Android phone. If you haven't flashed a custom ROM or a different operating system like postmarketOS to your phone, you probably have a "certified Android device".
So, if you have a normal Android phone, you will not be able to install apps from developers who are not approved by Google. This gives Google power to block developers and apps it does not like.
This also applies to apps you might acquire outside Google Play, like from F-Droid.³

To be fair, the lists of devices supported by non-Google Android distributions is a tiny subset of all the devices out there. None of the four Android phones I've owned are compatible with any of the other Android distributions. And I'm not keen on spending the money on a flagship phone so that I can have a different Android distribution (and risk bricking it in the process)

It might be possible, but also out of reach of the typical user.
Besides, banking apps require a "certified Android device", which also excludes custom ROMs. Banks pretty much require we own a smartphone to consult our accounts. The new European age verification thing also has a reference implementation that requires Android with Google Services.
So we have Google closing their ecosystem on one hand, and apps and regulations forcing us to Google on the other hand

Pixels are the supported devices because they're the most secure Android devices and provide proper support for using another OS. Nearly all other Android devices lack the required security features and nearly all also lack proper alternate OS support. @christian_freiherr_von_wolff @populistensohn GrapheneOS doesn't follow the rules required for certification by design. There's also no way to install Google Mobile Services as privileged components on GrapheneOS where they could block installing apps in the first place. It's simply not relevant. You can install sandboxed Google Play which are regular sandboxed apps with no special access. Regular sandboxed apps can't do things like blocking installing other apps so those can't do that.
#GrapheneOS is looking more appealing by the day.

The reason I purchased an Android phone was because I was tired of Apple telling me what I can and cannot do with my own device. What Google is doing now completely defeats the purpose of sticking with Android. I've mentioned here before that I can't access my downloads folder anymore for "security" reasons. By 2027, Android will officially be more limited than iOS. This needs to be stopped. #Android #SideLoading @apps

Time to make serious work of Linux on mobile , that is the only long term viable solution. All custom ROMs are in the end fully dependant on Google that can always kill these projects as soon as they become relevant or close to mainstream.

@eckes If you're publishing apps to GooglePlay, you already have to give Google your information, but this new requirement applies also to people who do not publish their apps to Google Play. A develoer who just publish apks to git releases or to an own website, will have to give Google their personal infomation or people with normal Android phones will not be able to install their apps

Requiring developer verification can improve security: less anonymity makes it harder for spammers and scammers to spread malware, increasing trust in Android apps. But Google’s implementation is concerning: it could give them too much control over which apps run on certified devices. Security should never be an excuse to make the Android ecosystem less open or limit user choice.

@globcoco @christian_freiherr_von_wolff You need one of the devices meeting our hardware requirements which are supported by GrapheneOS.
Samsung Galaxy devices either do not allow installing another OS or cripple the device's functionality including hardware-based security features if you use one. Galaxy S9 is also end-of-life since a long time ago and lacks driver/firmware security patches along with not having modern security features.

@globcoco Usually with a computer/laptop that came with Windows, you can install a different OS (E.g.: Linux, BSD) on it without much trouble.
Lot of Androd phone manufacturers make it difficult for people to change the operating system of their phones. Surprisingly, it's easier with Google's Pixel phones than lot of other brands.
@TeflonTrout @globcoco @christian_freiherr_von_wolff Their devices are incredibly far from meeting our hardware requirements listed at grapheneos.org/faq#future-devi…. We need a device to have full support for installing another OS, provide proper firmware/driver security patches and the hardware-based security features we need. They're missing each of those things, as are most mobile devices. We're working with a major OEM towards them providing some additional devices we can support.

I can tell you that you probably don't really want to choose farming over tech.
But if you can find a niche in "art", making even a modest income, that can really be a good life.

true until you try it. I've been in It over 50 years and at one point switched to farming. That is just backbreaking hard work every day all year. So I switched back to IT and try to relax. And now enjoy my 6 weeks of holiday each year.

I've been a software engineer my entire life, and I can confirm this is true. I argue at work to make things simple, and yet we always end up chasing the new shiny flavor of the week practice.
Don't know about buying a farm, but a a few acres and a nice garden would go a long way to keeping yourself sane. Commercial farmers are just folk who do what they are told 24/7 by customers or agricultural advisors who are often chemical salesmen.

30 years in software development. Built a small upscale house in a spread out neighborhood built on an old bankrupt golf course. Private neighborhood with a good HOA and a clear charter that defines our standards and boundaries. I ride my bike down to the peninsula point and the Chesapeake Bay. My dogs know all the local trails and food carts!

The amounts of miracles have dropped dramatically after smartphones.
Those small rises and dips are people going "wow we found a bloody communion wafer!" before testing it and realizing it was just red mold again.

I'd like to agree with this, but I can't help but notice...
1) The y-axis has no units labeled
2) There's no methodology describing how the data was gathered.
Things like that always make me suspect the truth isn't so cut-and-dried as the graph makes it look.

I wonder if ICE would get mad at me for a tee shirt I made - it has a U.S. flag on it but with the blue area replaced with a Chinese flag. Below the flag, there was a caption, "Foreclosed". I made it when they were having a government shutdown due to congress not doing what they are paid to do. At the time China was our biggest creditor.

I'm tempted to print a few thousand Mexican flag bumper stickers and spread them everywhere (over here in Europe) to help making them a global sign of Anti-ICE resistance.
The racism is so blatant and out loud now. The slow normalization gradually implanted an authoritarian regime by the drip by drip effect of "the other" always being the target.

If this happens to you, collect as much information as you can, preferably badge numbers but even a photo of the agent's car and license plate would work Record location, time, and date. They are claiming they don't profile people. With enough documented cases, you can prove that they are lying by using standard statistical tests. Organizations such as the ACLU could use that information in a lawsuit to show that the government is lying to the court. Let them know.

Damnnnn I briefly lived in Ecuador about a hundred years ago. Never did get around to using that EC sticker I bought... Might be time to dig it out. Wonder what would happen if my white-as-a-hotel-towel ass answered them in Spanish? 🤔 Or German might blow their tiny minds.

I was advised to do this during the "bundle install" process (which I did), to fix a problem with "nokogiri-1.19.2-x86_64-linux-gnu", but I don't know why I need to do it.
