Bullies are often fundamentally cowardly: if their home, or their country is under attack they rank saving their own life and possessions first and above the group.

A bully will expect any group they target to crumble in a similar manner. The idea that their threats and attacks might cause people to find a common cause, that it might inspire bravery and unification is not something they can anticipate or imagine.

Because were it them? They would shove the child out of the lifeboat and run.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

Nothing irritates a bully more than when someone else demonstrates the courage or honor that they lack. They will have an immediate need to prove that any such acts were either a sign that the person was duped, or that the sacrifice was motivated by a desire for public acclaim, not any principles or moral values.

To confront true selflessness is terrifying for the bully. Nothing could be more alien. Nothing more clearly calls into question their own self worth.

No! It's virtue signaling!

in reply to myrmepropagandist

There is this cynical and currently popular idea that everything is "virtue signaling" and to some extent it's true. Part of why people do what is right even when it won't benefit them is about making a statement to themselves and others about what we value.

But, it's also ... not that hard, not even that remarkable to really want to be a good person even when you don't personally benefit. I'd even suggest it's normal.

reshared this

in reply to myrmepropagandist

doing good that doesnt benefit us in some obvious and direct way is normal in that it occurs in other species as well. Not to mention, we often do what's right while actively avoiding recognition for it.

We've just drifted so far from a recognition that what's good for all is of course good for us: we, too, live in the better world we are making with kind, honest, and/or courageous acts. We *are* everybody and everybody is us. It makes me sad -- and it's not a little scary -- all these people who do not see the intricate, interconnected web of all life as it is.

Petra van Cronenburg reshared this.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

“virtue signalling” did start out as a value neutral term just for describing a completely normal social thing literally everyone does; like a generalisation of role modeling.

What was done to it is what happens to a lot of words and phrases: the right wing got hold of it, either misunderstood it or deliberately distorted its meaning, and for some reason everyone else adopted their framing

Jeremy Mallin reshared this.

in reply to Luci Bitchface Angerfoot

@Luci Bitchface Angerfoot @myrmepropagandist The reason everybody adopt the new framing is that newspapers adopt the new framing, radio and TV newscasts adopt the new framing, politicians adopt the new framing, social media favors the new framing, etc… I put social media last because I believe the behavior predates Internet. For example “Socialist” and “Hippie” went through the meaning grinder in the US way before Internet was a thing.
in reply to Sin Vega

@sinvega it’s a pattern that goals back way prior to the algorithm- the earliest example i know of being “Politically Correct”

i vaguely remember seeing a segment on a guy whose professional job was coming up with these language manipulations- i remember him calling it “neurolinguistic programming” but when i tried to look that up it described some unrelated pseudoscience

in reply to Sin Vega

@sinvega @bri7

Yes. The Republicans have been excellent at Maddison Avenue manipulation of our speech. It goes all the way back to Reagan's Morning in America campaign if not before. It was definitely prevalent with the framing of the Healthcare initiatives as being manned by death panels.

Wish I could remember it but the guy who came up with the Republican talking points during George W. Bush's terms had a documentary about him out ages ago.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

When I first encountered the term "virtue signalling", I thought how apt that was for things like politicians harping on about how upset they were about people's suffering, when they had the power to change everything. It was dizzying how quickly it moved from "signalling virtue, doing nothing" to "making the world a better place but perhaps for a less than pure and saintly reason."
in reply to myrmepropagandist

I think you are right: it's normal (but not universal) to want to be a good person.

Learning about goodness from our parents or other mentors is very important, but it is not the only source of motivation to be good.

Experiments with chimpanzees, bonobos, other mammals, even birds, have shown that "fairness" is not a concept that is unique to humans.

However, goodness isn't universal. There are evil people, and they love evil societies. Good people must resist them.

in reply to myrmepropagandist

I am of the opinion that the best response to an accusation of virtue signalling goes something like this:

PERSON A: You're virtue signalling!

PERSON B: (PAUSE) …and?

If you're sincere, then there's nothing wrong with being open about it so others can see. It's the same reason why we resist (excessive) swearing in front of children. It's behavior modeling. You're showing other people the person (or Owlbear) you want to be.

(I am aware that some people are being insincere, but that's a different issue)

From what I understand, "virtue signaling" is doing something that is considered good, but specifically because you have an audience when doing it.
With the implication that if no one was there to see you doing it, you wouldn't bother to do the right thing.
Is my interpretation false ?
(English is not my first language)
Because if it isn't, obviously this is an awful thing to do.
in reply to myrmepropagandist

@noodlemaz

Bear in mind that with the right it's ALWAYS projection, I read their accusations of "virtue signaling" as a confession of deep cynicism–they don't really believe anything they say so they don't understand how anyone else could, either.

in reply to Isaac Ji Kuo

@Isaac Ji Kuo @Charlie Stross I don't believe that. They have very specific beliefs, and they will also virtue signal every chance they get. Although they are similarly blindsided as the left as of not being able to conceive other people don't think like them. On the right, it manifests in dehumanization and projection, on the left it manifests in compromises that are mostly abandons of their professed values.

@hypolite @cstross @isaackuo

There is a difference between bullies and "the right" ... there are people on the right who believe in things. Some I can even agree with, but other ideas are ... deeply uninformed. This is what a political debate is mean to be about.

I do think that at this moment bullies, may find the right more accommodating to the kinds of things they want to do... but if a bully can get what they want with other values the values change.

A jury has awarded at least $2.2m to a protester who was shot in the face with a less-lethal munition by a Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy during a demonstration against police brutality in 2020.

In the verdict last week, the jury found LA county liable for the injuries sustained by the man,
Cellin Gluck, and determined that he suffered $3.5m in damages.
They also awarded his daughter, who was there with him that day, an additional $300,000 for emotional distress

They should be awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in punitive damages, against the City, the Mayor, the Department, the Police Union, the officer, and whatever they just got awarded against the County. And all their crowd control devices, vehicles and technology should be locked away until their policies change.

DNC Chair Ken Martin killed the resolution stop arms to Israel claiming, "The party is deeply divided, we need time for dialogue."

The party is not deeply divided, Ken. You're deeply disconnected.

When 92% of Democratic Party voters are telling you that we want to STOP arming Israel, and you refuse to act, there's no division, there's only complicity.

There's nothing left to debate. Muster the courage. Show that we are the anti-war, pro justice, pro humanity party. Stop Funding Genocide.

Let me start by saying Im no fan of Google keeping a register of every dev who wants to have their apps work on the majority of Android devices!

However, think this will be enforced by Play Protect, which IIUC (in 15 years of using android devices Ive never run a device with Play Services) can easily be turned off. No need to flash a different OS to avoid this.

in reply to dazinism

@slowfallinward @raito
I do very much think it should be possible to run a different OS on all consumer smartphones.

They should support yellow state - relocking the bootloader & getting full verified boot - by flashing the signing keys for the OS onto the device. Its not good that many devices only offer running something else with bootloader unlocked. Shouldnt have to accept this huge downgrade in security against local & remote exploitation, in order to run something else

Emmett Till would've been 84 today. He was only 14 when white supremacist terrorists horrifically murdered him.

The white woman Carolyn Bryant Donham who accused him of harassing her later confessed she lied. The warrant for her arrest was never enforced. She died only 2 years ago in 2023 at the age of 88.

White supremacy terrorism isn't ancient history. It's not even history. It's contemporary reality.

It's such a ludicrous notion, too. Nazi spaces these days function almost entirely as places that fetishize & offer explicit instruction in violent masculinity. They are structured around a desire to achieve a very specific vision of white manhood. That's so obviously not a draw for trans femmes.

The image features a wall mural of a man in a suit and helmet, depicted in a cartoonish style. He is floating in the air, holding onto a steering wheel-like object with both hands. Attached to his back is a red fire extinguisher labeled "SIFEX POWDER," which is creatively integrated into the design to resemble a jetpack. The man's posture suggests he is ascending, with his head tilted back and eyes looking upwards. The background is a plain white wall, and the floor is carpeted in a dark color. The mural is located in an office setting, as indicated by the visible door and office environment.

New by me: Citrix forgot to tell you there was a zero day RCE vulnerability used widely since at least May in Netscaler.

Nobody released any technical information until now.

It has been used to pop "critical" organisations in the Netherlands and worldwide.

What to do:

doublepulsar.com/citrix-forgot…

in reply to Kevin Beaumont

How is the Citrix Netscaler business unit still alive? I would imagine there’s some smart people out there figuring out a “here’s a way to dump and import your complicated network rules to something else…anything else” tool somewhere? Or is this a “we signed an enterprise contract with Citrix and are stuck with them till the end of time” deal? Like getting stuck with Teams if you’re a large O365 shop?
