Not your average baby shark: An aquarium welcomes a pup from an all-female tank

Yoko the swell shark was born in a habitat of all-female sharks who hadn't seen a male in years. The aquarium has two possible explanations — and hopes to get confirmation in the coming months.

Yes, there should be - hang on, I'll see if I can find it ...
friendica.world/help/BBCode for friendica.world help,
bbcode.org/reference.php for general BBCode help ...

Ok, let's try this:

this

(hm, interesting ... I used a wikipedia link, but it's changed to friendica.world
- but if I click to edit my comment, the wikipedia link is still there)

Ha! it works with markdown. One can read the alt text by hoovering the cursor over the image, like this:
! [ alt text ] ( url to the picture )
in reply to Ⓜ3️⃣3️⃣ 🌌

Of course you have to enable the markdown interpreter in your profile settings, extensions, markdown...

@m33 @phle @m33 Maybe. But those of us who use screen readers don't use a mouse, so hovering means nothing.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

I was typing that question : does it work with you screen reader, sorry that it doesn’t.
Will try something else later.
Oh and if I may: how about emojis? Text and image does they get read aloud ?
in reply to Ⓜ3️⃣3️⃣ 🌌

@m33 @phle @m33 That depends. If someone sets a screen reader to read them, they can. But that's usually for the emoticons like smiling, etc. The emojis that are like graphics are sometimes read and sometimes not. I personally don't use any of them and have all of that turned off. What is really bad is when someone writes twenty of them in a row. Imagine hearing "cat with smiling face" twenty times. So many people do that that it's easier to just have it turned off. But many blind people do use them.

Thanks for explaining. Oh and I've just seen a picture narated by this bot, don't know if you knew it already but if not, you may want to give it a try fuzzies.wtf/@altbot
in reply to Ⓜ3️⃣3️⃣ 🌌

Yes! I've seen it as well
- but I'm unsure of whether it only works on mastodon (because I've only seen it on federated mastodon posts, here on Friendica), or if it's possible to "summon" it to here as well.
in reply to phle

It says mention me, so here we go: @Altbot give me the alt text for this image
in reply to Ⓜ3️⃣3️⃣ 🌌

Oh one must first follow it, and wait for the follow back before the bot can do its thing

@m33 A light golden-colored Golden Retriever dog is smiling with its eyes closed. A person's hand, wearing a red and black plaid shirt, is gently petting the dog's fur on its side. The background is blurred but shows out-of-focus green foliage.

Nice!

I'll go follow @Altbot too. Even if I won't post a lot of my own images, there might be images in links.

@phle @m33 Yay! I love these little tests! I was able to read it all!
