Groups - do they actually exist

When I ask people why they're still on Facebook they all mention closed communities inside groups. So - if I am to have any chance of moving people to Friendica we need the same kind of open or closed communities here.

But I can't really see where to create a community like that? Can you even do it?

Edit: What I want from a group is:

* Can be open or closed
* Members don't have to be friends to be in the group
* Group creator/admin can act as moderator, or elevate other people to mods, inside group

It's a little strange that it doesn't seem to exist on Friendica, as it - alongside Messenger in Denmark and Events - is the main reason why people use FB.

Yes, they exist! They are set up in a somewhat strange way however, needing to create a new account that will serve as the group itself.

The basic steps to create a group are:

1.) click on contacts (the multiple people icon)
2.) under the groups box to the right, click the plus sign to create a new group
3.) enter the E-mail/password for the new account

That said, this is an area that I personally think needs attention from the devs. I think there needs to be a groups icon up top (arguably just repurpose the local/global community icon since it is redundant) that takes you to a more user friendly groups management dashboard, both for groups you're following, their feeds, and the ones you manage yourself. You should not be left asking questions like this, when the functionality does exist. It needs to be more streamlined and easy to use.

I don't see any such groups box on the right on my friendica.world contacts page.

Same here, I need to go to SettingsManage accountsRegister an additional account to get at that stuff. And it's beyond counter intuitive that to create a forum for my friends, the answer is to create a additional account and make that a Community Group account. Good example of a place where hiding some of the implementation details in the UI would help.
