🔍 Practical Example: Comparing Phone Plans

To show the real-world value of functions and systems of equations, the pupils worked on various tasks, such as comparing phone plans with different base fees and per-minute charges. They solved these systems both algebraically and graphically in a coordinate system.

This week, our students from grades 8–10 and VGS visited the "Didaktisk Digitalt Verksted" at the University of Stavanger in staggered groups — a hands-on tech lab where they got to try out modern tools themselves.

They experienced cutting-edge technologies firsthand, including:

- MatataLab, where they programmed robots to solve tricky challenges.
- Sphero Indi, which they navigated through obstacle courses.
- Bee-Bot, perfect for first coding experiences.
- VR headsets, which let them explore virtual worlds—from ancient cities to underwater landscapes.

One student even printed a dinosaur on a 3D printer and got to take it home!

For the past three weeks, 4th-grade pupils have been focusing on buildings!
Among other things a bridge was constructed using diagonally arranged branches as supports, forming triangles—this makes it stable and strong enough to hold weight!
With sturdy branches, the pupils built a solid bridge over the stream.

What did they do?

• Sketching and planning: Together with their teacher, the pupils drew plans and took notes to design the bridge.
• Gathering materials: Outside, they selected and cut sturdy branches.
• Building the bridge: The bridge was built over the stream in the schoolyard. A key feature of such simple constructions is that diagonal supports make them stable—this helps distribute the weight better, so the bridge can hold more.

What the pupils learned:

• Craftsmanship and planning: They learned how to build simple yet stable structures.
• Teamwork: In groups, they planned, discussed, and built together.
• Experiencing nature: Working outdoors and using natural materials made the lesson hands-on and engaging.

This week, the 7th grade pupils completed their geography block about Scandinavia.
The focus was on landscapes, climate zones, and the cultural geography of the region—from cities like Stockholm, Copenhagen, or Oslo—to natural phenomena such as glaciers, rivers, and coastal formations.

In class, the topics were explored theoretically, practically and artistically:
The pupils wrote their own texts, drew maps, learned to use an atlas, and deepened their knowledge of cardinal directions and the compass rose. This created a deep understanding of the region they live in.

The three-week blocks take up the first two lessons of each school day. This enables a deep focus on a single topic. The theoretical knowledge is internalized through self-written texts, practical applications, and personal drawings. This focused approach fosters independence, sustainable learning, and creativity.

In the last weeks, the 10th-grade pupils have been working on an intensive course in art history.
During their daily two-hour lessons, the teacher guided them through the epochs from the Stone Age to the Renaissance. Based on the lessons, the pupils created their own textbooks with personal texts, drawings, and notes – a valuable activity to internalize the content.

As a finishing activity, the course included practical projects:
The pupils applied what they had learned in their own works, using methods ranging from classical techniques to digital tools.
The choice of materials and techniques was as diverse as the epochs themselves:
The following exhibition featured interpretations from all eras of art history, made from clay works, drawings, embroidery, collages, Lego constructions, and digital Minecraft creations.
To give an impression of artworks and exhibition pieces from the 10th grade, they have been published in the album 2026_10_kunsthistorie.

Why this approach?
The theoretical lessons in the daily morning hours establish a solid knowledge base. The practical implementation allows pupils to actively apply and creatively deepen what they have learned – a valuable addition that connects theory and practice. Each course concludes with a test on the topic. The assessment includes the test, the self-created textbook, and the project work.

The 10th-grade students have completed this year’s blacksmithing projects in their crafting lessons.
The results —bottle openers and wall hooks/coat hooks— are hand-forged with great care. These are typical beginner projects, as they help develop fundamental techniques such as bending, hammering, and shaping. Each piece is a unique result of working with fire, anvil, and hammer.

In 2nd grade, the first official school year is marked by curiosity, fairy tales, and creative learning.
The pupils experience a time when everything is new—and that’s what makes this period so special.

Fairy Tales as a Foundation

The class works intensively with fairy tales and archetypal stories. These are not just told but also artistically processed through drawings, paintings, and discussions. Even letters and numbers are introduced through stories—children create their own workbooks, a method that stays with them all the way to upper secondary school.

This week, our pupils in the beekeeping group were busy:
Under their teacher’s guidance, they melted wax sheets onto new frames to prepare the brood chambers of the beehives. This work is an important step in providing the bees an optimal home.

Additionally, they inspect the hives weekly to detect swarming tendencies early—this way, they can take timely action and ensure a safe environment for the bees.

🐝 Why is this important?
The pupils learn that melting wax is a traditional method to make it easier for bees to build combs.
The teacher explains:
- Bees save energy because they don’t have to build everything from scratch.
- The quality of the combs improves, leading to stronger colonies and better honey production.

🐝 Bee swarms are typically calm because:
- They have no hive or brood to defend.
- They’re loaded with honey—their food supply for starting anew.
- They’re focused on finding a new home.
- They’ll usually move on within 1–3 days.

📌 What You Should Do:
✅ Stay calm – Avoid sudden movements that might startle the bees.
✅ Keep your distance – Don’t swat, blow, or spray water at them.
✅ Don’t touch them – Even if they seem peaceful, they may sting if threatened.
✅ Call an expert – Contact local beekeepers or the fire department (many regions handle bee swarms).

In VG1/VG3, students take a four-week course in film and video, where they learn not only the basics of film production but also collaborate on a screenplay and experience all stages of filmmaking.

Camera setups:
Students explore how angles, perspectives, and movements shape a film’s narrative.
Storyboard:
The visual blueprint of the film is created here. A good storyboard acts like a comic, helping to sketch scenes, plan camera movements, and design the rhythmic flow of the story.
Set design (Scenografi):
Students learn how lighting, colors, and props bring a scene to life and enhance the film’s atmosphere.
Props:
Even small objects can deepen characters and plots—from an old book to a modern smartphone.
Directing:
Students practice guiding actors, coordinating scenes, and leading the creative process to bring the film’s vision to life.
Acting:
In front of the camera, authenticity and expression are key. Body language, facial expressions, and voice breathe life into characters and convey emotions to the audience.

The course culminates in the production of their own film exercise, where all these elements come together. Students also create a documentary project linked to film history—a creative and reflective way to engage with the medium.

When the hive becomes too crowded, the colony prepares to divide—a natural reproductive process that ensures the genetic diversity of honeybees.

1️Swarm mood:
Weeks beforehand, the bees get restless: they start building queen cells. Regular hive inspections help the beekeeper recognize this phase. Our students in the beekeeping group, under the guidance of the school’s beekeeper (a teacher), get to examine the hives and learn to interpret the signs.

2 The departure:
On warm, calm days, about half the colony leaves with the old queen—a breathtaking natural spectacle that showcases the vitality of the bee colony.

3️ The bee cluster:
The swarm gathers in a dense cluster near the original hive. Here, the bees rest while scouts decide on a new nesting site.

4️ Democratic house hunting:
Scout bees explore potential new homes. Through their famous waggle dances, they present their findings, which are then verified and either confirmed or rejected by the others.

5️ Moving into the new home:
Once a consensus is reached, the swarm moves into its new home. The bees immediately begin building comb, and life in the new hive gets underway.

The swarming season is a special phase in the bees’ annual cycle, which our pupils in the beekeeping group experience firsthand with great enthusiasm and curiosity.
