The fediverse just got way easier to join:

@aspensmonster Something to consider: I solved a similar question of how to balance "quality" vs improved discoverability for more obscure entries (in a different domain) by doing:

- "featured + ~5% random shuffle/mix chance per entry"

This way there is plenty at the top of what many people may be looking for. Along with giving more obscure entries a better chance at visibility that may just pay off if the right person sees it.

@Preston Maness ☭ @Daniel Supernault Small instances make sense as communities that aggregate from the bottom and involve users starting from local projects or thematic initiatives. Small instances, on the other hand, must not be ovaries that collect disoriented users who come from the large databases of the fediverse, otherwise two problems are created:
- some small instances would not be able to handle the crowding
- some of those users would find themselves in poorly managed instances, with discontinuity of service and poorly connected to the rest of the Fediverse. In fact, some small instances are little gems, but a part of the small instances is burdened by a very high mortality and is poorly managed both in terms of reliability and in terms of privacy

On August 15th, 2025, Steam will officially stop supporting Linux distributions with a version of glibc older than 2.31

For all you Linux gamers out there, Steam will halt support for Steam on distributions with old glibc.

To check if you're affected, run ldd --version in the Terminal.

It's always cool encountering people you know in different places!

I will have to try out the smaller instances. However there are not as many options.

My observations on Friendica:

- The platform looks much more approachable with the Bookface theme.

- Creating groups is a really complicated as you have to make a separate profile and tick certain settings to convert the account type to group.

- I really wish Friendica had a way to toggle only friendica posts on the global view, as it I would like to see what the other instances are posting using the same kind of format.

- The platform could also really use an iphone app.

- There may be issues with finding your friends profiles.

- Friendica supports 4 apis.

- Friendica existed years before activitypub.

100% on everything! 😀

I haven't even consider an app not existing (currently only using this on my PC). They really need that - or a website that works SUPER SMOOTH on a phone.

(but, judging by how the website itself work, that's not a thing)

There's also a couple of other slightly annoying things - for example, I have a couple of PixelFed profiles followed here, which is amazing. Unfortunately, if I Like or Comment on their posts here, it's only showing up HERE, they don't get anything on Pixelfed. Not great, because - in the case of artists - it "fragments engagement" which could hinder their careers.
