I've started a tiny project to replace all the giant landuse ways I placed when I first started mapping with something more manageable. It isn't taking as long as I imagined, but I sure wish I wouldn't have mapped this way in the first place.

👀 Artists and creators of the Fediverse ! ⁂

I want to make a Bluesky starter pack of creators of all kinds from Fedi, who are visible on Bluesky. If you are bridged to Bluesky (= if you're following @bsky.brid.gy), do let me know so I can include you in it, so people on Bluesky can follow you !

Boosting/sharing this post :
→ helps it reaching its audience (= bridged creators of the fedi)
→ makes Elno upset as it helps to cut our reliance on the Twitanic

So your 🔁boosts🔁 are really appreciated ✨

A while ago I thought it would be nice to have JOSM validator do the heavy lifting for US roadway name expansions (ex: Rd -> Road) [1]. It got cumbersome to manage by hand so I wrote a little C# program to generate the rules file [2].

If your country/region has good mappings between common abbreviations and expansions I would happily generate a rules file for you.

we have lots of St. and St which might be expanded to Saint but I'm not sure there's a huge call. There's a lot street signs just go with St.
in reply to Ownoh

@ownohmanny the check for “St” as a prefix is definitely a mixed bag based on region and such. It’s usually reasonably obvious in the United States what to do but sometimes you just have to leave it alone and let a more local mapper handle it.

Imagine tapping a link and seeing Every Door turned into a specialized tree collecting app, with taxonomy and rendering and presets.

Imagine scanning a QR code for a task in FMTM and your ED app shows the task boundaries, limits presets to features you need to collect, and shows a short manual on the process.

Imagine overlaying a mall plan before going in for indoor mapping.

Imagine surveying features to your own PostGIS server.

That is the future of Every Door.

I have avoided using #TheBorg as frankly, those zombie space vampires are the show's most prominent horror creation, and the list could go on forever...

I've started looking over north Texas marking the band practice fields I can find with leisure=pitch, sport=marching_band. I am always open for suggestions! Here, you generally find them at high schools on a dedicated field, or part of a parking lot as seen below.

watmildon reshared this.

in reply to end0fline

So marching band practice fields exist? 😶‍🌫️ That place looks a lot like your average parking lot tho
in reply to Paguro

@Paguro Yes! Some are grass, but at least around me, they appear as an American football field painted on top of a parking lot. Sometimes they have one or two giant circles in them, though I’m not sure what those are for. Practicing group turns maybe?
in reply to end0fline

@Paguro Also they often have some sort of tower next to them where the drum major/band director will be located.
in reply to end0fline

I have been a medieval flag waver in a team for quite a few years, and we'd always perform with our own marching band of musicians and dancers.
More often than not you need a lot of space and reference points, like in theatre and movies. Points to turn around yes, but also to align the figure with the dancers. May that be the case here?

That's a big difference between Italy and the US, having the director on a tower. That'd be impossible here and the drummers would go out of sync haha

in reply to Paguro

I might have been overselling it when I said tower, but thats what they're labeled in OSM. Haha.

They're usually a 10x10 foot platform, one to two stories high, nothing too extravagant. My school was smaller though and had a rollable platform that they would bring out on to the field for shows.

in reply to end0fline

My best guess is that they're painted as such to resemble the actual football stadiums where they perform? Using the yard lines (is that their name?) to align and move
in reply to Paguro

I think you're correct, but I was in choir in school, not band!

Only the schools that have larger parking lots have a full "field" painted. I've seen many that only go from something like the 10 to the 50 yard line, or some that are even shorter without numbering at all.

in reply to end0fline

Yeah, after all why would you have a parking lot that huge? Might as well cut a section off for use in these occasions or as a general-purpose playground or field, right?

Makes sense!

We have something similar in some neighborhoods of Naples, Milan and Genoa, where sections of a few residential streets became soccer fields overnight

(without all the bells and whistles of painting lines and installing nets of course)

This entry was edited (1 day ago)
in reply to Paguro

Unfortunately, giant parking lots are normal in my state (country?). REALLY big parking lots without trees. It is super awful.

Soccer fields after dark sounds pretty cool!

in reply to end0fline

Oh. I thought that was only an issue of bigger cities.
Without trees? Must be quite the oven when the sky is clear...! :(

Yeah it's pretty cool that people are still repurposing spaces without going through the infinite hoops of burocracy. People need livable, shared spaces, not a spaghetti bowl of roads leading to roads leading to roads. Parks. Plazas. Fields.

If only.

If people want their children to go to a private school, they should pay for it themselves. If they want their kids to go to a religious school, they should pay for it themselves.

It is interesting that the plan enacted in Arizona has ballooned out of control. I have no doubt the same would happen here in Texas.

"The Texas Legislative Budget Board projected that the cost of Abbott’s voucher program would have ballooned to more than $2 billion annually by 2028."

I really hope this group fails. I'm tired of a minority of people trying to shape the world for their own gain, leaving the rest of us behind.

Residents in the north of the Gaza Strip are trapped

It’s not just the intense bombing campaign, but the systematic destruction of infrastructure and public facilities, but also the fact that the Israeli military is cutting food and water supplies to the local residents inside these areas.

They are trapped; they don’t have a safe route to leave their homes; the moment they step out of their homes, they are being shot at by snipers or attack drones.

Something looks suspicious about the IA attack, and I suspect the goal is to change sentiment about *something*, probably the Internet Archive, but it's not clear what, and it may be more than one thing. It seems like someone probably paid a hacking agency to do this, very possibly a publishing house upset about copyright claims, and I say that especially because:

- "See you on Have I Been Pwned", but really, this is one of the least dramatic things to end up on HIBP of all time: it's names and email addresses sure, but all the passwords are properly hashed and there isn't much else. So why gloat about it?
- There seems to be an attempt to lower public impression of IA in terms of talking about its tech "held up with sticks". It is old tech, so maybe, but why the focus on that?
- If you analyze the HN thread about it for comments in terms of when posted, there were a bunch of sockpuppet accounts created almost immediately after the post was made, seemingly to add comments: news.ycombinator.com/user?id=N… news.ycombinator.com/user?id=h… news.ycombinator.com/user?id=1… news.ycombinator.com/user?id=M…
- An allegedly pro-palestinean militant hacking group is claiming responsibility, but their rationale doesn't make sense: they say it's because the IA is an American company, and the US is helping Israel. But why the IA *specifically*? This seems like a false flag operation either to draw attention away from the real perpetrators, or possibly to try to turn technically inclined people against pro-palestinean activists x.com/sn_darkmeta/status/18441…

The IA *is* engaged with several fights with publishers and people who have beef on copyright grounds. It's entirely possible one of them hired a nation-state affiliated hacking group (of which there are quite a few) that had a side beef, or that group is trying to throw the public off its tracks, but regardless, sock puppets like this typically appear after a hacking attack when there's a paid organization.

Regardless, nobody else is keeping the internet's history alive, and yes, the IA has made some mistakes sometimes, but I stand behind them and wish their staff strength in dealing with this time.

From a VoiceOver perspective, a slider control is presented and you explore the posts by swiping up and down, then explore the screen to discover things like links, replies in the corresponding thread, attached multimedia.
