In the past, #herbaria were bound volumes. Some had beautiful arrangements and even drawings of vases from which the plants would appear to be in.
At the NHM London, we have bound volumes by the Liberato Sabbati, curator of the Rome botanical garden in the mid 1700s. #CuratorLife #HerbariumLife

The Burramys parvus or Mountain Pygmy Possum, or burramys for short, inhabits Australia, in places such as Victoria and the Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales. These nocturnal marsupials were discovered by British-South African medical doctor and paleontologist Robert Broom back in 1896. Australia’s only mammal restricted to alpine habitats—is one of the smallest possums, at lengths of 11 centimeters or 4.3 inches, with 14-centimeter or 5.5-inch tails, and weighs 45 grams or 1.6 ounces.

The Ectophylla alba or Honduran White Bat, also referred to as the Caribbean White Tent-Making Bat, is native to Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and West Panama. They were described by American physician, anatomist, and Civil War veteran, Harrison Allen in 1892. These adorable animals, which strategically make tents out of leaves, are the smallest bats in Central America, reaching lengths of just 3.8 to 4.8 centimeters or 1.5 to 1.9 inches, and weigh 5 to 6 grams or 0.18 to 0.21 ounces.

Be very careful with Barefoot Pink Moscato. It is beyond delicious but very powerful. I never drink more than a glass of anything (except on my birthday, Christmas, and New Year, when I have two), and I always eat enough before doing so, but I am quite happily drunk at the moment! Do I want to listen to opera, switch to my beloved operetta, or listen to IvorNovello himself in a radio performance? Sometimes, life gives me delightful quandaries! Maybe, I'll do a little of everything. I also still need to update my Dreamwidth entries. Oops.

Here is another video with all sorts of light and lyric tenors. None are modern, so they all sing beautifully. Sadly, they are not named, so I don't know who is who, but I do think I caught Schipa and have said recording separately.

The cost of preventing extinction of Australia’s priority species

"It would cost $15.6 billion per year for 30 years to prevent extinction for 99 of Australia’s priority species. The cost to reverse the decline of priority species and undo damage done by habitat loss, disease and other threats was estimated at $103.7 billion annually, while getting them off the threatened list entirely would require $157.7 billion per year.”

"Biodiversity loss and ecosystems collapse is ranked by the World Economic Forum as the second most significant global risk over the next decade, with 50 per cent of the global economy dependent on nature. " >>

I'm going to have so much fun tomorrow! I found more names of early opera singers, including some English and Welsh ones, as well as a few who worked with the great Italians. Right now, my collection consists of the following. Enrico Caruso, Beniamino Gigli, John McCormack, Louis Graveure, Richard Tauber, and Tito Schipa. I'm looking for their contemporaries. But I also think that I will relax and listen to some more operettas, as I miss them. It's just that finding them in English and performed with dialogue is extremely difficult. It's the same with opera, of course, but in that case, I'm mostly enjoying the voices.
in reply to Georg Tuparev

@Georg Tuparev I sincerely thank you for this! I mostly focus on tenors, as a matter of personal taste, but I certainly will learn about baritones and basses as well, so I will start with Chaliapin, Christoff, and Gobi. Barring contraltos who are difficult to find, my focus has almost exclusively been on men, though I have listened to a few suppranos to briefly compare modern and older styles. That said, Freni is too young for me to add to my list, as I try to stay with those who either started in acoustic recordings and moved to electric or who died before it was invented. The exception to this is Simoneau. I think the modern changes began in the 1950's, though I could be wrong, being very new to all of this.

#PostOfTheWeek (season 3):
Italian opera singer Mirella Freni has died at age 84. Freni’s manager said the famed soprano who enthralled audiences for half a century died Sunday at her home in Modena, Italy, from a degenerative muscular disease and a series of strokes. Freni was the last in a line of Italian sopranos who prompted ovations with their entrances alone.

Sometimes I favourite posts with photos that have excellent alt text, and are probably also great photos. I always wonder whether the favourite would count as 3 favourites to the poster if they knew I was blind. Liking photos in any form is a very new hobby for us, a child of Mastodon as far as I'm concerned. It's restful for me to read alt text about nature or ice formations or an interesting animal or a cute cat, so I'm grateful.

Meadow Pipit

Fairly common to common in open grassy habitats, from moorland and bogs to rough grassland and pastures. Mostly inconspicuous, small streaky brown bird. When flushed, note slightly bounding flight and white sides to tail. All pipits look rather similar and are best identified to species by combination of habitat and voice: Meadow Pipit call a high, slightly lisping "sip" and "sip-it" (or "pip-it").

Are you using Mastodon on a computer? If so, you might want to try out Mastodon's "Advanced Web Interface". It has a multicolumn layout similar to TweetDeck, and is built into all Mastodon servers:

This guide tells you how to activate and use it, as well as answers to lots of common questions about it.

Some people find multicolumn mode essential, while others find it overwhelming. You can use whichever interface you prefer 🙂

I woke this morning and thought "I want to listen to Richard Tauber". I've been listening to Tito Schipa lately, so I thought that would be a nice change. I still haven't listen to the Tauber/Lehar concert, so that is something to look forward to. Then, I made my coffee, sat down, and started singing Gilbert and Sullivan! I thought "hmm. I have this song from Walter Passmore. I should listen to it." There is definitely something wrong with me. I have no idea where my mind will take me later. Maybe, I'll read some Sherridan!
