I probably already mentioned it, but deadweb.club is a pretty interesting project that aims to connect people interested in exploring "defunct social media platforms, abandoned 3D worlds, and forgotten blogs".

Their newsletter hasn't been very active, but they just announced a new member joining the team, so definitely worth (re-)subscribing.

Looking for gardening advice - I’ve babied this edgeworthia for three years and it has yet to bloom. It gets to this stage, and then.... nothing. This year it has set more buds than ever but not a one seems likely to open. What am I doing wrong??

Black-necklaced Scimitar-Babbler

Medium-sized, strikingly patterned songbird endemic to Taiwan, where less common than Taiwan Scimitar-Babbler. Brown above, white below, with rich olive-brown flanks, rusty undertail coverts, and black “necklace” of blobby black streaks. Inhabits foothill and montane forests, where it skulks in undergrowth and shrubby edge. Pairs duet, giving bouncy-sounding hoots; alarm calls harsh and grating.

#DidYouKnow: A Fata Morgana is a complex form of superior mirage that is seen in a narrow band right above the horizon.

It is an Italian term from a belief that these mirages, often seen in the Strait of Messina, were fairy castles in the air or false land created by her witchcraft to lure sailors to their deaths.

Jules Verne's novel Five Weeks in a Balloon, or, Journeys and Discoveries in Africa by Three Englishmen (Cinq semaines en ballon) is published in Paris. It will be the first of Verne's Voyages Extraordinaires. This was Verne's first novel to be published by Pierre-Jules Hetzel, following the rejection of Voyage en Angleterre et en Écosse.

Souimanga Sunbird

Small, hyperactive bird with a curved bill. Breeding males are colorful, with iridescent upperparts, and a yellow belly in most of the range, and a white belly in southwest Madagascar. Females are much duller, but can be told from female Madagascar Sunbird by their smaller size, smaller bill, and less distinct streaks below. Common in any habitat with woody vegetation. Feeds mainly on nectar, and flits around constantly. The song is a cheerful and explosive jumble of high-pitched notes.

I normally love light and lyrical tenors. I asked Perplexity to recommend some and it gave me these. Tito Schipa, Ferruccio Tagliavini, and Jussi Björling. From a bit later, Fritz Wunderlich, and Carlo Bergonzi. I then asked what sort of range John McCormack had, since he reminds me of Trefor Jones, abut whom I can barely find anything but whose voice I adore. Not only did I learn that he was a lyrical tenor, but he actually sang opera for a brief time! I had no idea! I knew him from Keep the Home Fires Burning and a few light songs! Anyway, now I must research these. If anyone can offer other suggestions, please do so.

Okay. I just watched the video and paid close attention to some cognates. Between that and the lessons from Madam Clara, I think I know what he is saying and demonstrating. The first example, in which he sings softly and sweetly, doesn't require heavy use of the diaphragm. The second, in which he sings very strongly, does require the diaphragm to be engaged. This is probably when Madam Clara would advise using the breath-lock etc, so the singer could store breath and only take small ones when necessary. I'm not sure if that is what he would do, but he was definitely using his full diaphragm. I actually tried it myself and laughed aloud, because the results were quite obvious! My voice completely changed and became much louder.. I also developed a slight vibrato, which surprised me.

Curve-billed Thrasher

Plain grayish-brown thrasher of the southwest U.S. and Mexico. Look for decurved bill and fairly faint round spots on breast and belly. Undertail coverts are slightly warmer buffy. Eye color varies from yellow to orange. Occurs in deserts and open, shrubby areas. Can be shy and skulking, but often perches atop a bush or cactus to sing. More common in suburban areas and parks than other thrashers in range. Most similar to Bendire’s Thrasher. Note Curve-billed has a slightly longer and more curved bill, and breast spots are slightly larger and rounder.

@Jonathan13 cement production is a significant part of it; carbon storage may be more viable if it is in the form of something somebody wants, but there's always the question of "how long does it stay there?" which discredits all of the nature-based schemes; i also see DAC as being a critical part of e-fuels and sustainable energy production

From my Collections (all from Youtube and the Internet Archive, except films)

Operettas I have seen: Everything by Gilbert and Sullivan, The Merry Widow, Perchance to Dream, Orpheus in the Underworld, La Belle Hellene, King's Rhapsody, Die Fledermaus, and Merrie England.
I also saw the film version of glamorous Night, which was a disaster other than Mary Ellis and Trefor Jones, and The 1950 version of The Dancing Years, which I can't recommend highly enough, as it was perfect.)

Operettas Left to Watch: Salad Days (liked the music), but haven't seen it), The New Moon, The Student Prince, Tom Jones, Firefly (radio production), La Périchole, and The Red Mill (radio production).

Operettas Only in Music (need full versions): Bitter Sweet, Countess Maritza, The Chocolate Soldier, The Land of Smiles, everything by Novello and Lehar not mentioned above, plus any other operettas in English. Please keep suggestions within the old style, not modern or modernised.
