As someone who is totally blind, the Fediverse is the only place where I have ever been able to follow people such as photographers, artists, or even those who post pictures of their cats or the food they ate. The reason is that most of them use alt text. They take the time to describe the images that my screen reader can't recognise. Some write the descriptions themselves, and others use tools such as altbot. Some worry that their descriptions aren't good enough, especially when they are new at this. Let me assure you, not only are they good enough, they are extremely appreciated! If the rest of the world thought as you did, it would be a much better place. Don't hesitate to ask if you're unsure of something, but never think that we don't notice your effort.

hello. Thank you for your post. Something I wanted to know is do you need the description of color ? Does that bring you information or is it useless ? (Because the color is very important to me, I do describ them in the altext but if you don’t matter I would skip them). Thank you for your answer (I hope i write well I am not very good in english)

After several hours, I have managed to go through every contact's profile, unfollow all of the political ones and ones that didn't really post content that interested me, , and ensure that the ones I really like are set to show all posts. Now, my feeds look wonderful and are much quieter!

Many of the locations of Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' can still be seen today. Scrooge's counting house is thought to be in Newman's Court, in the City of London. "The ancient tower of a church" is described, whose "gruff old bell was always slyly peeping down at Scrooge out of a #gothic window." That church has been identified as St Michael's Cornhill, which looms over Newman's Court. In addition, Bob Cratchit heads home via nearby Cornhill, where he "went down a slide" on the ice "at the end of a line of boys, twenty times, in honour of it being Christmas Eve." Scrooge's "usual melancholy tavern" where he takes his "melancholy dinner" is thought to be Simpson's Tavern in nearby Ball Court, which has been trading since 1757. The door knocker which turns into the ghostly head of Jacob Marley was apparently inspired by one in Craven Street, near Charing Cross, where Dickens worked as a boy in a shoe-blacking factory. #Christmas #literature #history #folklore #Yule #books #London

Mastodon in 180 Seconds 🐘

Lately, everyone seems to be trying to jump ship from Twitter to this new thing called "Mastodon". But when they do it, the first thing many of them say is "I don't get Mastodon. How does it work?" It's actually not complicated, just "different" from what you're used to. Here's a really simple explanation to help get you started.

@eq @Su_G @zeborah

It's just a norm, you don't have to do this if you don't want to.

Having said that, some third party apps have this behaviour by default, where they use public for new posts and unlisted/quiet public for replies. I think Ice Cubes does this for example? (The official apps just have one default visibility setting so you have to manually change it when using them.)

Column of Marcus Aurelius, built between 180-193 AD, in Rome, Italy, commemorates emperor’s campaigns against Germanic tribes and Sarmatians during Marcomannic Wars.

Standing about 39m tall in Piazza Colonna, it features a spiral relief depicting vivid and dramatic scenes of battle, including a rare depiction of “Rain Miracle,” where a sudden storm is said to have saved Roman army. Modeled after Trajan’s Column, it was constructed from Proconnesian marble and remains in its original location.

This 14th Century AD, door at Exeter Cathedral, UK 🇬🇧, is thought to be the oldest existing cat flap...

A cat was paid a penny each week, to keep down the rats and mice in the north tower, and a cat flap was cut into the door below the astronomical clock to allow the cat to carry out its duties.

Records of payments were entered in the Cathedral archives from 1305-1467 AD, the penny a week being enough to buy food to supplement a heavy diet of rodents.

The concept of playing cards is thought to have originated in Asia, making its way to Europe by the late 14th Century AD, likely through trading routes.

In the Netherlands, cards became popular during 15th Century AD, as both a pastime and a means of socialization among nobility and the growing merchant class.

In ancient Roman world, a tintinnabulum (tintinnum) was a wind chime or assemblage of bells. A tintinnabulum often took the form of a bronze ithyphallic figure or of a fascinum, a magico-religious phallus thought to ward off evil eye and bring good fortune and prosperity.

Pink-throated Brilliant

Scarce hummingbird found in cloud forest in the eastern foothills of the Andes in Ecuador, southern Colombia, and northern Peru. Green with a white vent and a small white dot behind eye. Male has a glittering pink throat patch, which is reduced or lacking on female. Small compared to other brilliants, and the only one with a white vent. Found only in remote and relatively undisturbed forest, and rarely encountered.

I’m experimenting with olla #gardening. I’ve filled a low-fired (porous) pot that I made with water and buried it in the soil with my seedlings. This pot wasn’t made specifically to be an olla, but any porous pot should work. Ollas slowly release water into dry soil, and roots pull it in through osmosis.

Olla gardening conserves water, reduces irrigation frequency, promotes deep root growth, and supports #sustainable, low-maintenance plant care.

Update: This was my first olla experiment. The seedlings did great without any surface watering (except from the rain, which we haven’t had enough of—we’re in a drought.) I’ve filled the ollas with #rainwater about once every 14 days. Our temperatures have ranged between a low of 50°F at night to 78°F during the day. My #zinnias are usually either too dry or develop powdery mildew when I hose water. So far, I’ve had neither problem. #gardening #OllasByOsa

I'm already a bit nervous to start, but I managed to learn the basics of servers on Mastodon and have chosen one that I think is neat!

I'm really interested in expanding my fediverse experience so, if you have any tips or apps to recommend for someone who loves art, nature and the news, don't be shy to let me know!

To the pleasure of meeting all of you! 😀

And thanks for complimenting my profile pic! I'll have to draw a more "clean" one to build my brand upon in the future but I still really love that sketch. Everyone else's art is so gorgeous too! I barely know where to start favouriting! Sorry for the spam in advance haha... ❤️
