I'm going to have so much fun tomorrow! I found more names of early opera singers, including some English and Welsh ones, as well as a few who worked with the great Italians. Right now, my collection consists of the following. Enrico Caruso, Beniamino Gigli, John McCormack, Louis Graveure, Richard Tauber, and Tito Schipa. I'm looking for their contemporaries. But I also think that I will relax and listen to some more operettas, as I miss them. It's just that finding them in English and performed with dialogue is extremely difficult. It's the same with opera, of course, but in that case, I'm mostly enjoying the voices.

@Georg Tuparev I sincerely thank you for this! I mostly focus on tenors, as a matter of personal taste, but I certainly will learn about baritones and basses as well, so I will start with Chaliapin, Christoff, and Gobi. Barring contraltos who are difficult to find, my focus has almost exclusively been on men, though I have listened to a few suppranos to briefly compare modern and older styles. That said, Freni is too young for me to add to my list, as I try to stay with those who either started in acoustic recordings and moved to electric or who died before it was invented. The exception to this is Simoneau. I think the modern changes began in the 1950's, though I could be wrong, being very new to all of this.

#PostOfTheWeek (season 3):
Italian opera singer Mirella Freni has died at age 84. Freni’s manager said the famed soprano who enthralled audiences for half a century died Sunday at her home in Modena, Italy, from a degenerative muscular disease and a series of strokes. Freni was the last in a line of Italian sopranos who prompted ovations with their entrances alone.

Sometimes I favourite posts with photos that have excellent alt text, and are probably also great photos. I always wonder whether the favourite would count as 3 favourites to the poster if they knew I was blind. Liking photos in any form is a very new hobby for us, a child of Mastodon as far as I'm concerned. It's restful for me to read alt text about nature or ice formations or an interesting animal or a cute cat, so I'm grateful.

Meadow Pipit

Fairly common to common in open grassy habitats, from moorland and bogs to rough grassland and pastures. Mostly inconspicuous, small streaky brown bird. When flushed, note slightly bounding flight and white sides to tail. All pipits look rather similar and are best identified to species by combination of habitat and voice: Meadow Pipit call a high, slightly lisping "sip" and "sip-it" (or "pip-it").

Are you using Mastodon on a computer? If so, you might want to try out Mastodon's "Advanced Web Interface". It has a multicolumn layout similar to TweetDeck, and is built into all Mastodon servers:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-activate-mast…

This guide tells you how to activate and use it, as well as answers to lots of common questions about it.

Some people find multicolumn mode essential, while others find it overwhelming. You can use whichever interface you prefer 🙂

I woke this morning and thought "I want to listen to Richard Tauber". I've been listening to Tito Schipa lately, so I thought that would be a nice change. I still haven't listen to the Tauber/Lehar concert, so that is something to look forward to. Then, I made my coffee, sat down, and started singing Gilbert and Sullivan! I thought "hmm. I have this song from Walter Passmore. I should listen to it." There is definitely something wrong with me. I have no idea where my mind will take me later. Maybe, I'll read some Sherridan!

Bluesky is a centralised network, just like Twitter or Facebook.

It is very very very easy to have discovery systems on a centralised network, but that centralisation also means the network can be bought out at any moment.

If Musk wanted to buy Bluesky there is nothing to stop him.

If Musk wanted to buy Mastodon, that would be quite tricky as it is spread out on thousands of independently owned servers most of which hate him.

This entry was edited (Wednesday, February 5, 2025, 2:35 PM)
in reply to Fedi.Tips

@AuthenticPhoto @atomicpoet

Also, Bluesky has something like 100 times more funding than Mastodon, and that funding comes from Bluesky selling itself to VC investors.

Those VC investors aren't charities, they are buying the network with an expectation of massive profits, which will have to happen through exploitation of users ("enshittification").

Mastodon hasn't sold itself to anyone (and cannot due to its structure), so it isn't on a path to exploit users.

in reply to Fedi.Tips

You cannot have your cake and eat it. Centralisation and VC money comes at a horrible long term cost.

If you want a network resistant to Musk-type takeovers, Bluesky isn't it.

The only network which cannot be easily bought out is the Fediverse (which Mastodon is part of). This is the place to be if you want a different kind of future.

I know not everyone cares who owns their networks, but if that's the case why bother leaving Twitter or Facebook?

The #Carrington Event was both the most powerful #SolarStorm and the most powerful #Geomagnetic #Storm ever recorded.

It started with an incredibly intense solar flare, the most powerful ever observed, releasing a massive amount of energy and matter from the Sun.

This solar storm sent a massive coronal mass ejection towards Earth, which then slammed into our magnetosphere, causing the most intense geomagnetic storm ever recorded.

Sonnet 029 - XXIX
When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself, and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts my self almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

Great Blue Turaco

Wonderful, cartoonish bird. Note the tall black crest and the red-and-yellow bill. The tail pattern is distinctive in flight: note the black bar across the end of the tail and the pale green sides. Found in rainforest, gallery forest, and lush secondary habitat. Usually in small groups. Gives two distinctive calls, sometimes in conjunction: a deep “jeeeow” and a rapid, cackling series of incredibly loud notes.

I am enjoying the process of putting it together, so I will like it whether anyone else does or not. Lol.

If you're wondering why the mind-blowing news about the global energy transition is making so little of an impression in the US, contemplate that the US is the world's largest producer of oil and gas. Meanwhile China, the world's biggest oil *importer*, understands it all too well.
