Hey fedi, so I have this cheap doohickey for using computers away from a desk. It's got a touch pad and keys and is absolutely the right solution for the problem
But it sucks. The keys start bad and if used too much stop registering reliably, the touch pad ain't great, and it keeps losing connection to the dongle despite it being like 8 feet away
Is there some kind of premium version of these that exists? So far I've only ever seen the terrible dirt cheap ones for sale anywhere
(If you don't mind plz boost for reach I am *desperate*)
EDIT: to be clear the handheld/gamepad-like form factor is what makes this work so a more traditionally keyboard shaped device with an additional trackpad isn't really a suitable replacement

It's not really the same but I've used a Logitech K400 for this sort of purpose and it works pretty well at a distance.
(Australian link)
@BobDendry My favorite feature of the K400 is the duplicate mouse button on the upper left corner. I mouse around like a game pad, and set the whole thing on my lap when I need to type.
I wish there was a higher quality version. The keyboard has a whole has too much physical flexibility.
@ElBeeToots @LottieVixen @BobDendry if the touchpad on the side is awkward, consider something like amzn.to/3YwdEPo where the touchpad is on the bottom like a laptop without a screen or internals
as for explicitly handheld stuff, there really isn't anything you can get that's amazing in that form factor. most of... least-bad ones are made by a brand called "rii", and they cap out around $40-ish
i guess amzn.to/3EknQ6O is halfway in between? trackball, not touchpad
An old and quirky solution would be to use a Xbox 360 gamepad and its keyboard. You can then combine it with some piece of software to use a gamepad as a mouse:

Got it because it has clickable roller wheel (for middle mouse click and wheel) and left/right click on the bumpers. Bluetooth and 2.4ghz dongle - range always seemed ok but nothing fantastic.

BTW I can vouch for the DualSense controller itself, it's a lot better than XBox Series for operating a PC, so look for chatpads/ keyboards for that.

I used to use the Logitec Keyboard with touchpad for my TV PC. It was ok, but did not spark joy. Using the touchpad after a hard day gave me tennis elbow. Now I'm with an air mouse that is also a rudimentary IR remote and has a mini keyboard on the back side.
For when I need to do actual typing I have a bigger keyboard with touch pad arround.

@flxtr It essentially has an accelerometer and estimates where you're "pointing" at the screen by observing the movements of the device in 3D space. You'd use it kind of like a Wiimote but without a receiver.
(The estimation is surprisingly good but I've found them to be jittery and not really suitable for anything more precise than a TV-style interface with big buttons)

There also appears to be an earlier version, the Lenovo N5902, with a mouse function rather than trackpad and a slightly bulkier design.
Edit: Also spotted this Rii model, which looks like a compact variation on the one you have: amazon.co.uk/Wireless-Multimed…
... If you can do without a regular trackpad, I've used an air mouse for years that is also a universal IR remote and flips over for a mini keyboard. 2.4ghz USB plugin for connectivity and uses standard or rechargable AA batteries for power.
Search for MX3 Pro air mouse... usually around $10.
EDIT to add: it's a 'learning', programmable remote too, so it can serve multiple uses for multiple devices.
you could try a second-hand alphagrip: alphagrip.com/ ; I had one of those like 10 years ago, and it was a good keyboard, but I never got over the learning curve.
or, in a quite different form-factor, the twiddler: youtube.com/watch?v=ZkSkgHX58L… ; I own a twiddler 3, it's a really nice device.
I've used these as remote controls for RPi powered kodi boxes. I find that the family drop them a lot, and the battery cover snaps off, or the entire casing cracks, long before anything else does.
This is not a disagreement, I'm just impressed that you're gentle enough with yours that they have time to experience switch failures
Maaaaybe using a remote desktop connection from a uConsole? It has a great keyboard, very clicky-clicky satisfying. Only downside is it's a bit heavy (durable metal body) and the included trackball works but is a bit flaky.
(Also the wait after ordering one was a few months longer than their estimate even before the tariff nonsense)
I've had bad luck with the Rii ones, with the exception of this one. Maybe I got lucky with mine, but it's been a champ; never any connection issues. I pair it with the 3 OSes on my Deck when I'm out-and-about:
amazon.com/Fosmon-Portable-Lig…
Otherwise, I just stare disappointingly at my computer until it does what I want....
have you tried the other RII ones? the V3 and X1 have quite good keys and touchpads, I use them on my HTPC setup. I also have the K25 and while the keys are very good on it and it does work air mice get kinda annoying constantly re-centering them after setting it down.
I don't know if I'd ever actually try to do work with any of them though, you can get decently fast on them but it's still a chore compared to just a wireless keyboard.
Lenovo once had a really neat one, a "Multimedia Keyboard" which was a handheld, kind of Blackberry-type keyboard with a trackball and all. Those are now ancient and their rubber coating's turned to goo.
There's a version very similar to that one now on Amazon, called the N5901, but it's a pretty cheap design with bad mouse tracking and poor adhesives causing labels to just kinda come away. The make-or-break for me now is missing Bluetooth support, but that's personal preference.
I've not got any recommendations, but I had the unfortunate experience of buying an AERB mini wireless keypad & trackpad.
Like your experience it doesn't register keypresses at times & just is an unsatisfactory experience.. but the 'cyberdeck' form factor of a controller style device was my preference.
In fact searching for the now defunct AERB on Amazon (UK) throws up the device you have..
Anyway for completeness, I found a video review of this...
youtu.be/0uHdRBdeYlA
YES I've had a few variations of these they're great but also terrible. and consistently so. so frustrating.
I too would be very interested in an actually good version. Like you, in _this_ form factor.
i was kinda hoping i just bought a dud ):
my least favourite feature is how i have to clean the trackpad every time i use it

Oh man, the item loss do be relentless.
If you wanna make sure you never see something ever again just let me hold it for a minute
No, give it to me, I'll put it somewhere safe. You'll never see it again, but it'll be safe.
Just like the screws I need to reassemble my weed whacker.
When disassembling something, always tape the loose screws onto it using marking tape or transparent packing tape (whichever doesn't break the item's surface.)
This way I never misplaced screws.
Just because you see all the jokes don't assume he's doomed. If he's still a kid he has even more time to learn to manage his adhd better.
Be patient with him and help him figure out how to deal with stuff in a way that works for him. And help him learn how to handle emotions.
Plenty of people with adhd can still live good lives, even if they can struggle with some stuff.
Be careful with that phrase. Being glad for aspects of one's disability seems to trigger some folks, and the response can be hit or miss. Some days, you mention a thing you're glad that your ADHD gives you, and people dog-pile you for daring to find a silver lining in your own life.
I get where they're coming from, since there are a lot of folks out there that don't understand what ADHD is. But they forget that there's a world of difference between someone without ADHD dismissing struggles by claiming someone has "superpowers," and someone with ADHD who chooses to celebrate their unique strengths.
Sorry, tangent. I'm just trying to look out for you because I've seen the Lemmy community jump on people for less.
Thank you. I'm not afraid of online discourse or votes. I have the diagnosis myself, so speak from experience.
I do not consider it a disability, but rather being differently able.
I understand that my personal experience does not represent all those similar.
Cheers, have a nice day.
My X-men style superpower is that under moments of extreme stress I become the most efficient man in the world.
When I'm not stressed, I'm a lazy asshole, lazier and more asshole than your typical lazy asshole.
When I am stressed, I channel the avatar of The Flash for up to six minutes at a time, then afterwards, I forget everything I've ever remembered except for guilt that I don't operate like that all the time.

I'd like to note that users here are adults, a lot of whom didn't get ADHD support as children. Some of us weren't diagnosed until adulthood. Others of us were diagnosed, but had parents who "don't believe in" insert-scientific-fact-here. Many of us are behind in life now due to a lack of support during crucial years. These memes aren't an end-all, be-all of ADHD, but a way for all of us to find humor in our predicaments.
As someone who had parents in denial, I hope it brings you comfort to know that acknowledging and supporting your child is giving him a huge leg-up compared to many of us here. You won't mislabel your kid as "lazy" and burden him with poor self-esteem about it, the way many of us were treated. Add in the benefits of tech, like having programmable timers, alarms, and reminders, and your kid already has tons more support than many of us did growing up.
You're doing good, Mom/Dad/Parent. You're providing your kid with the what he needs to do better than the generation before him. That is progress, and that is awesome.

he willingly reads more than most adults I know.
I love this. Not just for the obvious ("kid likes reading") but because we live in a society of "TL;DR" and it never made much sense to me. Even with ADHD, I prefer long-form messages and social media that doesn't have a character limit. The rise of "TL;DR" seems to be mainstream, which likely means neurotypicals... it's really ironic, isn't it? Those who supposedly have "normal" attention spans can't bother to read through more than a paragraph sometimes. Yet, those of us who supposedly have an "attention deficit" will pour over articles, books, Wikipedia pages, and more for hours or days on end. We clearly have the capacity to pay attention, even if much of the modern world sucks at grabbing and maintaining it.
The most important thing that you can do for this kid is to make sure he knows how to study properly when he gets into school. Every word you've said so far could describe me to a T when I was 6, and I did great in school without ever trying, so when I graduated high school and went off to college I flunked out halfway through because I never learned how to study. It bored me, so when I didn't just "get" something immediately like I had always done before, I often just didn't learn anything.
I consider that to be the one big major thing that prevented me from executing on the trajectory I was on. Had I learned how to learn when I needed to, today I could be some six figure code wizard milking investment money out of VC's and techbros. Instead I'm an automotive mechanic near the poverty line with no college degree to my name.
I'm not upset with my own life path, per se, for a number of reasons - I enjoy my work, I consider it ethical (in as far as supporting the automotive industry can be ethical...) and not least of which I'd probably have never met my partner if not for this twisted road I've gone down. But sometimes when I think about it too much the sense of lost potential is a little overwhelming.
Learning how to make himself sit down and learn something even when it's boring is a necessary skill that he may not develop on his own. I sure didn't, and look where it put me.
Take up this torch, kid, and do better than me. You have it in you. Someday soon we might all be depending on you.
I was in the "I masked hard until I lost the structure going into uni" camp, and even then I didn't actually get a diagnosis until 31. It's super familial and looking back, my dad 100% has ADHD and kinda suspect my mom has ADHD too, it's not that they were in denial they just didn't see anything as atypical, no teacher ever flagged me either, again, hindsight, I was overly talkative to the point of distraction and absolutely had emotional disregulation.
My parents did their best and were supportive of me, it sucks I was late diagnosed but was not due to them at all.
I was a "hyperactive" kid, I am not sure if I even have ADHD. It sure feels like I do or at least did have more severe symptoms when I was a kid. I kind of turned out ok. I can live a healthy, full life, married. My parents barely have any idea of how and why I was a negligent, immature kid who couldn't get better grades or make friends despite doing everything in my power.
Looking back, the support I would have needed is just patience, understanding, reassurance and acceptance. If there are proven methots that work with learning difficulties, then that! To this day learning more than surface level information is pure pain.
Teach him how to learn in my opinion.
On the other hand, I am great at seeing the "big picture" and can derive information off of it to solve most of my problems on the go. It's not a lost cause, it's just different. Having to fit in society's narrow minded "just because I said so" standards is what made me feel and act worse when I think of it.

That's better than I usually do (and I am pretty sure I don't have ADHD so you are doing way better on that front now 😁)
"Thingy," "that thing," "thingamabob," and "whatchacallit" are all valid ways that myself, my friends, and my family refer to items. Sometimes there's an adjective or relative descriptor used to clarify, like "that spiky thing," or "the blue thingy next to the TV."
Do you also sometimes go through the alphabet when trying to find a word? Usually if I can figure out what sound/letter starts the word I'm looking for, I can find the rest of it.

I still feel like this is everyone and not really ADHD. I'm willing to bet a large percentage of people have most of these symptoms. If everyone has it, then no one does..
And before anyone says I'm dismissing it, I'm not, I'm just saying it's kind of like anxiety. Literally everyone in the world who has lived and will ever live has anxiety probably everyday. Are there varying degrees, of course.
To further this point, having half of these things can also be a thing for non adhd people... But, like most neurological diversities, it's how often they occur and how much they impact your life that makes the difference.
Everyone forgets their wallet/keys/phone/glasses from time to time... When you forget multiple times a week forever? It's different

@EUCommission Seems important you understand this point. Neoliberal fascist-adjacent policy just gives the fascists better tools to kill you with later.
there we have it:
"present a Technology Roadmap on encryption to identify and assess technological solutions to enable lawful access to data by law enforcement authorities in 2026"
In other words no more end to end encryption.
‘The EU Commission’s goal is to “access encrypted data in a lawful manner, safeguarding cybersecurity and fundamental rights.”’
@EUCommission
You can’t have both.
Pick one.
Choose carefully.
end to end encryption is end to end encryption.
There's no lawful way to access this without legalizing either breaking encryption (which always fucks up) or backdooring people's end devices (which always fucks up).
I get the desire but there's just no way to do this without fucking things up. You really need to let go of this @EUCommission

Can the EU explain to me how is this going to help law enforcement, exactly? Because if Im a terrorist and I am planing an attack, I can easily send a message without anyone noticing by simply sending a seemingly inoffensive message using specific keywords that only the people I'd be working with knows. And I dont need E2EE for this. Not to mention, PGP, LUKS, etc, are a thing. I can simply sign a text file or something with PGP, or create a loop file as a device and make a LUKS container on it, and share the file.
So I ask again, what good is this thing going to do?

i'm really sorry everyone,, apparently my food stamps have been cancelled. unfortunately i haven't been able to get a straight answer about what's going on with it yet. i genuinely hate asking again especially after just recently asking but if anyone wants to give anything it would mean a lot to me. i'm hoping things eventually get to a point where we don't have to worry about this as much

The image features a person with long, pink hair and large, pink mouse ears on their head. They are wearing a teal jacket with a gray hood over a pink shirt. The background is blurred, but it appears to be an outdoor setting with a sports court, possibly a basketball court, with green and yellow markings. The person is standing in the foreground, facing the camera with a neutral expression. The lighting suggests it might be late afternoon or early evening, with a warm, soft glow.
