There's this thing with two wires that looks like it plugs in at that plastic bit. And these two rake looking things that are mabe just feet to stop it rattling around inside the case? [Edit: The rake things and little two coloured cable are not necessary for the basic setup I'll be trying. Just pop the radio with it's ariel into the case.]

you can ignore the extra shit if comes with (headers and jst pigtail) you just need the antenna plugged in like you did
Now just stumble your way through using the web flasher to get the firmware on there, install the app, connect, put the heltec v3 in the highest window you have, and continue wondering why you're doing this
Got the radio and ariel popped into the case. Got a USB cable (one that can do file transfers, not just power) and connected it to my computer. Went to this website to get the right software for it. flasher.meshtastic.org

When you click the Erase Flash and Install button at the bottom it will probably pop up a thing at the corner of the browser (top right for me) asking you to let the website have access to serial devices. It means it wants permission to interact with the USB your wee radio is currently connected to so it can install over that.
It can be quite a long list of devices to choose from. In my case it needed access to "ttyUSB0". Probably look for something with "USB" in the name. Allow it access.
To connect to your new wee mesh radio you will use Bluetooth but you also need an app. When connecting the little screen will give you a code to put into your phone. On Android type devices you can get it from @fdroidorg, or probably other app stores. f-droid.org/en/packages/com.ge…
Once you've connected your phone you've got a lot more options on the app that you probably will never need to interact with but are nice to have access to.
From here, as long as it has a power source (plug, powerbank, etc) it will run. Put it high up. In a window with a clear view. Carry it around on a walk or a drive. See if you can pick up any other nodes around your haunts. Have fun.

@chrisod @not2b I've had T1D for 37 years and I'm right with you on the skepticism. Not eager to have my immune system suppressed when we have measles outbreaks and government-enshrined vaccine denial... The autoimmune response *is* T1D and it needs to be solved.

@fluffgar I heard they're working on a "vaccine" to teach body to stop attacking parts of itself, currently targeting lupus, this has potential. Encapsulating cells has an issue that cells have certain lifetime, and after they die, it's the immune system clearing them away to make room for new ones - which we stopped from accessing them. As for making cells immortal, there's a name for that - cancer, so willingly implanting them is risky.
@chrisod @jpshoer @not2b without a doubt, the industry prefers management over a cure thanks to $$$. If your wife is only getting 7 days out of a Medtronic sensor then that strongly suggests she's on the old generation sensors. If she gets the opportunity moving over to the tandem t-slim with the dexcom CGMs is the way to go. I use G6 sensors still because I use a hacked transmitter. But the g7s come on in 30 minutes. And they last 10 days without batting an eye.
@thegorf @chrisod @not2b Closed loop CGM + pump is night and day from when I was a kid, for sure! Sometimes, though, I fear the incremental pump, CGM, and algorithm improvements are leading to a treatment dead end. My top issue with my own diabetes management is infusion sets, and there's so little effort improving those! Perhaps something implantable is the answer. I still want a cure.
@jpshoer @chrisod @not2b 46 years here. I've been following the transplant research for years and was nearly a research candidate. Gene therapy to correct the autoimmune response is where the gold is. In the meantime better pumps and CGMs make life pretty easy. Gone are the days of pork insulin and 5 shots a day. I've been hoping to see an implantable pump for several years now.

Writing this from Berlin, Germany. Guess we can agree that this city and its suburbs got a pretty decent public network with even the most remote places seeing regular service. S-Bahn run at 80 to 100 km/h. Trams and metro at 60 km/h. Still you barely reach an average speed of 15 km/h when using public transportation, because of the delays and detours. Cars move here with an average speed of 30 km/h.

But that's simply not viable for large swaths of the country, especially areas that are not cities. And even if we committed to it, it will take decades to rebuild all our cities to not need cars. Well, and then there is the cost: Once you wasted your money on a private car, the PV charged electric car drives almost for free, while public transport is 4,70 € per trip. Get another persons in your PV car and safe money; even with acquisition and service.

Most of us aren't born with a car, and while the 4.70 euros would be a bit much for my liking (I spend 2400 KRW on a single trip (~2 euros) on a bus that is as fast as cars. But, paying 4.70 would probably still be less than your vehicle expenditure.

Can you use a single Fediverse account one more than type of application? For example can you use a Mastodon account to log into a Lemmy client or do Lemmy clients require an account on some Lemmy instance?
It depends on the client, some of them are designed to work with lots of different account types. Fedilab ( @apps ) is designed to work with many account types.
However, if you use an account type on a client not designed for it, you may not be able to access all the features of your account. For example you can use Pixelfed accounts on Mastodon clients, but you won't be able to post more than four pictures at once as this is the limit on Mastodon.
If you want to upload videos to PeerTube or do livestreams on PeerTube, you will need an account on a PeerTube server.
You can usually sign up on a PeerTube server by clicking "request an account" at the top of its website. Not all of them are open for signups though. More info at:
I'm new to mastodon and I just picked a random server. I'd like to post various types of content and reach people. I've seen there are servers that have something art-related in their name, others seem to be gamedev related and so on. Is it important what server I post from? Will people of any server be able to engage with my posts, no matter what server I post from? What would be a more fediverse way of posting different types of content? Making accounts on different themed servers?
Most people only need one account, because their account can be followed and interacted with from other servers. That's why we can talk, even though we are on different servers.
If you're new, you probably don't need to worry, you're on a stable general server so you should be able to post whatever content you want (as long as it's within server rules) 🙂
Themed servers are for accounts with a particular focus, but many servers are general.
No, they're totally different social networks with no connection or common standards. You might occasionally see "bridged" posts from other social networks, but these are basically just copying posts over rather than being a direct connection.

I’m hoping to find (or initiate) a good spot for sharing music releases. I’m a music producer with a large network of artists from the Netherlands. It would be an honour carve out a little place of the fediverse for everyone to share their work and connect to fans.

For sharing music, maybe the best option is PeerTube? It was originally designed for video as a YouTube style thing, but it also lets you upload audio files (with optional artwork).
People on Mastodon etc can follow and interact with accounts and videos/audios on PeerTube. PeerTube can also be followed from podcasting apps such as Apple Podcasts.

@Ismellamuskus - Thinking of it as a "server" limits your thinking. An "instance" is your neighbourhood, filled with social networking possibilities. Technically both are software solutions but don't underestimate the human difference.
"Professional" is nice, but the main test to clear is to avoid being a tombstone. It is better to make simple posts than referring to a dead web site, no matter how fancy the design is.

Verification usually works by having a link to your account on a trustworthy website (for example @torproject is verified at torproject.org so we know their account is genuine).
Maybe I'm missing something but I'm not sure how HTML file uploads on Mastodon would help with that? 🤔

When people talk about the "survival of the fittest" or "the crime of empathy," I want clips like this to be pressed into the sides of those people's self-serving dumbfuck heads until they cave in.
This is literally survival of the fittest in action though. It's never about the individual, it's always about the group. The group that teaches the best habits benefit just as much as the group that perpetuates a beneficial mutation.
Compassion *is* a trait that benefits a population, otherwise we never would have developed it enough for it to survive generations. And we wouldn't see it in animal populations like this.

Survival of the fittest was coined by Herbert Spencer, an enthusiastic supremist and eugenicist. Darwin never spoke in those terms, calling it "Natural Selection." The reason it's bullshit is "fittest" is a misleading term. Natural selection is survival of the barely good enough. Anything better, Ma Nature no care she lazy!
And who cares if we're better or worse at surviving? That's how they get you to stop people from surviving, for the crime of not surviving. If they won't survive, you don't have to help step on them. But if you do that, the ultra-wealthy will benefit greatly from your self-destructive obedience to their lies.

Since people can't read minds (as much as many would like to believe empathy lets them) my motivations are unknowable to them and if I act in the way I think an empathetic person would their brains fill in the blanks and perceive me as feeling empathy even though in reality I'm not feeling anything.
Me masking my ASPD is pretty much entirely for the sake of avoiding social punishment. It's a lot of conscious effort to pay attention to facial expressions, tone of voice, and all the other indicators of someone's emotional state to try to figure out how they're feeling but in the past few years I've found people I can be honest with and they still care about me even knowing what I am and getting to have friends is pretty tight. I still can't share in anything they feel which means I can't form meaningful emotional connections so it's a pretty lonely life even with people who care about me around.
Seeing books like Robert Greene's "48 Laws of Power" sell well or politicians talking about the "sin of empathy" honestly baffles me because I can't imagine why anybody would want to self-impose the kind of emotional isolation I don't have a choice but to live with. Division of labor and interdependence are the things that made our species successful in the first place. If you look at the evolutionary arms race that shaped our species, humans are really squishy and pretty bad at everything that isn't innovating new ways to throw rocks or working together. Even if it doesn't come naturally to me, I still have to figure out how to fit into the mold of my species if I want to succeed.

He described that compassion, care for others and cooperation are present in many animals and have been further developed in humans through intelligence, language and reflection.
He described that societies with strong emphasis on morality and cooperation would have an evolutionary advantage.
There are so many sayings that get twisted in this broken way. One of my favorites is "blood is thicker than water" used to justify abusive family dynamics. The whole phrase is "Blood of the covenant is thicker than water of the womb." and it literally means the opposite of what it's been twisted into — that connections forged in difficult circumstances and shared experiences are stronger than that of genetic relations.

Absolutely! I also don’t understand why and how on earth scientists STILL believe that animals are incapable of things like empathy and emotions. (I’m taking an animal behavior class and this drives me crazy that they insist that you talk like this). I grew up in the woods basically and I didn’t have to anthropomorphize other animals to see how they dealt with life around them. They definitely had feelings and emotions.
It's religion—specifically a pernicious strain of christian dogma that holds that only human beings have "souls" (a prerequisite for "going to heaven", the main value proposition Christianity relies on to sell itself to its believers). If animals are automata with no interiority and no emotional states it's okay to eat/abuse/experiment on them. Otherwise it opens an entire can of christianity-specific theological worms.

People who cite Darwin rarely have read Darwin, at least that's my experience. The old dude would have looked at the video and then he'd said that the SPECIES is very well-fit for the environment as it has evolved the capability to assist struggling individuals.

The really interesting story is how that leads to cooperative behaviour like this. Go look up "kin selection" and the book "The Evolution of Cooperation".
@R1Rail Exactly, turtles as a species survive better when the individuals help each other. This is exactly how 'survival of the fittest' works.
Humans are absolutely the prime example of this. In most ways we are inferior to many animals, worse sight, smell, hearing. Not as strong as our primate counter parts.
Our two real advantages are opposable thumbs and the ability to co-operate effectively. And so we have come to dominate the planet.
“Survival of the fittest” is ignorant on multiple layers. Firstly, it reduces the whole process of evolution to simplistic “war of all against all”. Secondly, it ignores the fact that empathy and altruism are also products of evolution, therefore they have certain evolutionary benefits, as nicely portrayed in the video.
In fact I was interested in the etymology of the phrase, after reading this, and apparently the first appearance of the phrase is the German Reinhart Fuchs/Reynard the Fox... anyway I will definitely bear this in mind the next time I hear the phrase misused 👍

There is no survival, no one survives. Not even historically. Some people become stories.

To make a very long story short, I am forty-one and became interested in opera in February of this year. I had been listening to operetta for several years by this point, with special attention to the works of Ivor Novello and Franz Lehar, always preferring original cast recordings, or at least older ones, when possible. Even now, all of the opera singers I like were born prior to 1923. I am interested in learning how to sing for pleasure, and possibly for performance, though not in full operas, as I am totally blind and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that. I would most likely be singing Neapolitan songs, Italian art songs, a few English parlour songs, and some arias that I enjoy. I am untrained and my voice type has not yet been designated. I adore the tenore di grazia voice type and also enjoy lyric tenors. My favourite singer is Tito Schipa, and I wish to learn what he taught, or at least, what he learned. I have the ten exercises that he recorded, including short narrations for each. I wrote about them here, with a transcription of the Italian and an English translation. This way, you will know the school of thought that I am attempting to follow. The one thing I cannot find is the booklet that came with said exercises, which offers more guidance than the record.
Since Schipa left little behind, I began researching his teacher, Alceste Gerunda. It is true that he technically started with Giovanni Albani, but hardly anything is written about him at all in Schipa's biography, and it seems that Gerunda was the one who gave him all of the exercises in any case.
I learned that Gerunda was born in 1847, and that his teacher was Saverio Mercadante. Neither left books, exercises, or published notes. But I found the school where Gerunda taught prior to opening a private one in his home. It has since become a library. They have two books on him that I want and that may shed light on some of his teaching practices. These are "ALCESTE GERUNDA E LA SCUOLA LECCESE DI CANTO" by Silvia Mandurino (ITES 1969) and "IN MEMORIA DEL MAESTRO ALCESTE GERUNDA NE L'AVVIVERSARIO PRIMO DE LA SUA MORTE" by Giulia) Lucrezi (Palumbo.
Perhaps, there are anecdotes within them that can help me. They may also have the books that he used to teach, assuming he used any. I have written to them asking if they could assist me, but haven't yet received a response.
In the meantime, I am trying to find information about the pedigogs of his time, so that I can at least learn the ideas and methods that he may have passed down to Schipa. But, of course, there were as many schools of thought as there were teachers. To make matters worse, Gerunda and Schipa themselves appeared to differ in their teaching style. While the former would tell the latter when he made mistakes in exercises, Schipa seemed to just give them and play the piano without giving much commentary. Ironically, Mercadante is said to have taught like that. From what I understand, if I did follow the regular bel canto style, I would need to work on notes, then scales and arpegios, then ornamentation, then songs/arias, all of this taking many years. It seems that Schipa didn't work on breath control, individual notes, tone, tamber, and so on with his students but went straight to vowels and scales. I don't know if this is from his own teacher or if it was his personal philosophy. I have definitely heard of the breath-first and larynx-first schools of thought, so it could stem from there.
People keep saying that i need to see a teacher, but most charge $100 or more per lesson, and at that rate, I can't afford more than two lessons per month. Plus, I want to find someone who knows the old ways, not modern ideas and terminology that I will need to unlearn. As it is, I am already studying harmony from "Harmony its theory and practice" by Ebenezer Prout, and Italian from "An Italian conversation grammar" by N Perini. It's just voice that is giving me a problem.
@petrnuska Just thinking out loud, but @mcmullin, this may perhaps be more your wheelhouse than mine. I’ve been to some operas, and have talked to some singers who were going to study at Trinity College London. It’s a very specific performance and vocal style. In direct response to the post, I’ve also sung in a choir with a female tenor and a male alto, so some people will happily judge purely on vocal range and passagios. That said, true low contraltos can be absolutely amazing.
@cassana @petrnuska I’m afraid this is not my wheelhouse at all! It’s clear that @dandylover1 already knows much more than I do about her area of inquiry. But there are many choral singers and a few opera singers on here who may be able to help. I know almost nothing about classical vocal training except that it is very much an oral tradition, probably not something you can learn from books, and potentially harmful to try without guidance.
@cassana @petrnuska So even if it’s just the occasional lesson, it would help to have a teacher at least point you in the right direction and check on your progress. As far as voice types go, it’s not that unusual for women to sing tenor parts especially in choirs, and in the solo repertory you mention, I think pretty much anything goes. So by all means, sing where you sound good and feel right.
@Cassana 🍻 @David McMullin @Petr Nuska Just to clarify. I am absolutely not against finding a teacher, even if I can take only a few lessons. My problem is finding someone who actually has the knowledge that I seek. From what I have read, modern training and pedigogy is quite different, even if people sing the same repertoir. Just listening to the older versus modern recordings demonstrates this. I don't want to learn certain things, only to have to unlearn them later. I also recognise what was said about the voice and working alone. I highly doubt Schipa's exercises will damage my vocal cords. They are extremely simple and don't strain them. My question is, what do I do after that? And of course, having a professional pair of ears to guide me wouldn't hurt either. I wonder if I can, perhaps, upload myself doing the exercises and receive suggestions that way.
@cassana @petrnuska It sounds like what you really need is a teacher whose pedagogical lineage preserves the old methods you’re drawn to. I have no idea how to find such a person. But I imagine it’s possible that there are “modern” teachers who do know about this and could guide you in it, even if it’s not what they offer most of their students.
@David McMullin @Cassana 🍻 @Petr Nuska Yes. This is exactly what I am seeking. I am also really hoping that someone at the Bernardini Library responds to me within the next week or two. They may not even be able to help me, but at least I'll know I tried. I also wrote to Seth Riggs, who actually studied with Tito Schipa, but that was a few weeks ago, and he never responded either. That, though, is understandable, given that he's in his nineties and extremely famous.
@andijah @mcmullin @cassana @petrnuska I would add that many good teachers would be happy to have one or two trial lessons with you to find out whether they can meet your needs, and the best would be able to say "I'm not the right person for you, but my colleague so-and-so might know someone."
Another option is finding modern singers whose style you like and asking who they study with.
Two lessons a month might be okay if (and only if) you are diligent in practising on your own.
I can’t comment on your spesific question about style, but I recognize the feeling of being most comfortable in the lowest part of my vocal range. I started singing lessons with a new to me teacher last fall, and asked if we could work especially on the lower end, since before, all my teachers had seemed to just to want to push me to sing higher. Turns out that working on the chest register has really helped me feel more comfortable singing higher up as well!
I also recognise how hard it is to find a teacher that you really can trust to guide you in the right direction. But I think you might need to take the risk of learning a few wrong things along the way while you seek your goal. Learning a skill isn’t a linear process anyway.
I know I could have done exercises for ever by myself and not gotten to where I am now after just one school year of lessons. So having a couple try out lessons with different people I think really is a good idea. They may know other people again who they can point you to.

It’s kind of rare for a show to get this much of a warning that their show is ending. So not only has the third season not yet aired (July 17), the fourth season is in production, and finally they’ll get a truncated fifth season of 6 episodes (instead of 10). I should hope they’ll be able to wrap it up nicely in that case.

The middle box is the firmware version you want. Choose the latest under "Stable (or beta)" from the drop down menu.
The right box is to "Flash" it. That just means install the software (firmware) on the device. A screen will pop up. Click continue.
Another screen will pop up. Toggle the "Full erase and install" in step 3 to on (red).

in reply to Fluffgar 🏴 • • •When you click the Erase Flash and Install button at the bottom it will probably pop up a thing at the corner of the browser (top right for me) asking you to let the website have access to serial devices. It means it wants permission to interact with the USB your wee radio is currently connected to so it can install over that.
It can be quite a long list of devices to choose from. In my case it needed access to "ttyUSB0". Probably look for something with "USB" in the name. Allow it access.

Once it gets going the window below the Erase Flash and Install button should start scrolling with percentages and hex codes. All very tech looking.
Eventually that'll calm down and the tiny screen on the radio device itself will give you a welcome message.

From here, as long as it has a power source (plug, powerbank, etc) it will run. Put it high up. In a window with a clear view. Carry it around on a walk or a drive. See if you can pick up any other nodes around your haunts. Have fun.
